UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTONY THOMAS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SPYRIDON GOBGOLIS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATOMIZER.
Application filed September 30, 1924. Serial No. 740,748.
. To all whom it may concern:
7 Be it known that I, ANTONY THOMAS, a citizen of Greece, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Atoinizers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to atomizers and its objects are to provide a small and compact atomizer which may be conveniently carried in the pocket, and which will produce a spray when in'an upright or inverted position.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I
attain'in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an atomizer constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 a face view of the atomizer shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 a section Figure 2,
Figure at a view similar to Figure 3 illustrating the sides of the casing pressed inward,
Figure 5 an enlarged section on line 55 of Figure 3,
Figure 6 a View similar to Figure 5 illustrating the atomizer in an inverted position, and
Figure 7 an enlarged view partly in section of elements which form a part of my invention. 7
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a casing having flexible sides 2 and a filling opening 3. A cap t is screwed onto a boss 5 forclosin opening 8. A U-shaped tube 6 has one leg 7 secured to the top of cap l, the other leg 8 disposed within the upper part of the casing and an opening 9, adjacentthe curved part 10, disposed near the lower part of the casing. The fluid passes out of the casing through this tube 6.
To use the atomizer, cap 4 with tube 6 are detached and the casing filled through opening 3 with a liquid to a level substantially as shown at 11 in Figure The cap with its tube 6 is then attached to close opening on line 3-3 of 8. The sides 2 are then pressed inward from the position shown in Figure 3 to the position shown in Figure l. This raises the level 11 of the liquid shown in Figure 3 to the level 12 shown in Figure l and creates an air pressure in the space 13. The compressed air will pass through leg 8 of the tube and past the opening 9 and will create a region of lower pressure in the tube and thus allow the liquid, which is under the higher pressure, to be forced into the tube through opening 9. The air passing at high velocity through the tube will atomize or break up the liquid coming into the tube through opening 9 so that atomized liquid will pass out of leg 7 in a fine spray.
lVhen the atomizer is inverted as shown in Figure 6, the air will pass through opening 9 instead of leg 8 and will create a region of lower pressure in the tube so that the liquid will be forced upward through log 8, to be atomized by the air rushing in through opening 9. This atomized liquid then passes out of leg 7 in a fine spray as before.
lVhile I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be linden stood that the various parts may be changed without departing from the spirit there of, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. An atomizer including a casing characterized by having a top cap closure threaded thereon; a bent tube within the casing having one leg thereof fixed in the cap closure and extending through the same and having the other leg thereof terminating short of the cap closure and opening into the space above the tolerance line of liquid; said tube being of a length to have its bent portion situated near the bottom of the casing and having an opening adjacent its curved portion, substantially as described.
2. An atomizer including a casing characterized by having a boss and a cap closure threaded thereon; two tubular legs Within the casing, the top end of one leg being fixed to the cap closure and extending through the same and the top end of the other leg terminating Within the boss short of the cap closure, said tubular legs being united at.a point near the bottom of the easing, there being an opening in one leg adjacent the point of its union With the other of the legs, substantially as described. 10 In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ANTONY THOMAS.
