To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, CLARA DELL SMITH, citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of h liddlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Screens, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a screen'including a jointed frame composed of two frame members, filling members closing the outer sides of the frame members, and hinges connecting the frame members, the screen being adapted to be opened and closed and to stand vertically on a floor when opened.

The object of the invention is to provide a screen thus organized with improved pocket means adapted to securely confine garments and other articles, and with an improved arrangement of shelves adapted to support various articles used in sewing, in such manner that the articles are exposed and conveniently accessible when the screen is opened, and concealed within the screen when the latter is closed.

In the drawings, 12, 12 designate two frame members connected by hinges 13 and provided with filling members 14, closing the outer sides of the openings formed by the frame members. The jointed frame members, the hinges, and the filling members, constitute leaves of a screen adapted to be opened as shown by Figure 1, and closed as shown by Figure 2, the screen being adapted to stand vertically on a floor when opened.

The filling members are preferably of textile fabric, such ascretonne, silk or tapestry, and are attached by nails 14 or other suitable fastenings to the outer edges of the strips or bars of which the frame members are made. the margins of recesses 15 (Figure 3) within the frame members, the backs of the recesses being formed by the filling members. The recesses are sufliciently deep to contain holders fixed to the frame members for holding in the recesses various articles used in sewing. In this instance, said holders include cross bars or shelves 16 fixed to the upright bars of the frame members and extending across the recesses, and upright pins 17 fixed to the shelves, the pins and shelves being adapted to support thread spools. The holders may also include pocket members composed of flexible pocket sides 18 of textile fabric, attached at their lower edges by nails 19 to the bottom strips of the frame members and having free upper edges extending across the recesses, and reinforcing stays 20 engaged with the free edges and attached to the frame members, the stays being prefer-ably composed of helically coiled wire. The sides 18 and the lower end portions of the filling members 14 constitute pockets adapted to hold cloth and small garments. The elastic stays prevent the upper edges of the pocket sides 18 from sagging, and permit them to be bulged outward to a considerable extent by the contents of the pockets, said pockets being of variable capacity and adapted to securely hold considerable accumulations of articles.

To the fixed shelf 16 of one leaf is connccted by hinges 22 (Figure 2), a swinging shelf 23 to support various articles used in sewing. The hinges are arranged to permit the swinging shelf to hang vertically and project into the recess in the other leaf when the screen is closed, as shown by Figure 2, and to swing to a horizontal position with its upper surface fiush with the upper surface of said fixed shelf, as shown by Figure 1, when the screen is opened, so that the two shelves 16 and 23 constitute collectively a relatively wide and commodious shelf, the shelf 23 being an extension of the shelf 16. The swinging shelf is releasably supported in a horizontal position by a chain 24, secured at one end to the table and adapted to be detachably engaged with a fixed hook 25 on the upper portion of one of the frame members. \Vhen the chain is disengaged from the hook, the shelf 23 swings down ward and permits the closing of the screen, as shown by Figure 2, the chain depending from the swinging shelf into a rcr of the screen. Another shelf 16 may be utilized to support hooks 26 on Which scissors and other articles may be hung.

The frame members may be fastened together by a hasp 27 and a catch 28 When the screen is closed. The upper ends of the frame members are provided with handles 29 permitting the screen to be conveniently transported.

I claim:
