Be it known that I, MAX BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storage-Battery Terminal-Post Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in storage battery terminal post clamps, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character, which will be highly efficient in use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a clamp of this character that can be turned circumferentially with respect to the terminal post to facilitate tightening the clamp in position.
In connection with this object, it might be well to mention at this time that, the clamps that are now 'on the market are provided with a socket bearing member into which the tip or cap of a circuit wire passes and is held therein by a bolt screw-threaded in the outer end of the tip. In using a clamp of this character when conditions demand that the clamp be revolved about the terminal post, in order to tighten the clamp therearound, it has often been found that the circuit wire is too short to permit the turning of the clamp or again that the screw bolt for tightening the clamp around the post is in an inconyenient position to perform this operation. In my improved clamp, I provide a slot of appreciable length in the clamp for the passage of the bolt which connects.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

screw-threaded bolt for attaching the circuit wire to the clamp;

Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the clamp illustrated in Fig. 1 and taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 1.
In attaining the objects enumerated above, I provide a split clamp 10 adapted to embrace a terminal post 11 of a storage battery A of any approved type. The opposite ends 10 and 11 of the clamp are drawn together by means of a nut receiving bolt 12, of any approved ty e, and by thus drawing the opposite en s of the clamp together, the clamp is caused to tightly embrace the terminal post 11. Formed in the side of the clamp 10 is a slot 13 of appreciable length -through which a head bearing bolt 14 is adapted to pass and be screw-threaded in a metallic cap or tip 15 of a circuit wire 16. The opposite side edges of the slot 13 are adapted to engage in an annular recess 17 formed in the bolt 14 adjacent the head 18 thereof. The bolt 14 is mounted in the slot- 13 by passing the bolt through an opening 18 formed in the side of the clamp 10 and communicating with the slot 13, as shown, the diameter of such opening being a trifle larger than the diameter of the bolt 14 to permit said bolt to pass therethrough. The head 18 of the bolt 14 is rectangular in shape and adapted to sit in a. recess of appreciable length 19 formed in the post engaging surface of the clamp. This construction is such that when the bolt 14 is screwthreaded into the tip 15, the turning of the bolt is accomplished by turning the clamp.
In use the clam is first attached to the tip 15 of the circuit wire 16 by assing the bolt 14 through the slot 18 and y turning the clamp until the bolt is screw-threaded into the tip as far as possible. The clamp is then mounted to embrace the terminal post 11 and the opposite ends 10 and 11 of the clamp are drawn together b means of the bolt 12 until the clamp tight y embraces the terminal post From the foregoing descriptibn it will be seen that my improved clamp is simple in structure and will be economical in manufacture and highly eflicient in use.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. '1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claimas new and desire to secure by Let* ters Patent is: v
1. A device of the class described including a circular body adapted to embrace a terminal post, the ends of the bod being normally separated, a member ad ustably passing through said separated ends, said circular body having an elongated slot formed in its side, a bolt working in said slot and headed, and a recess communicating with said slot andafiording a seat for the head of the bolt.
2. A device of the class described including a circular body adapted to embrace a terminal post, the ends of the body being normally separated and diverging on interseating planes, means in connection with the diverging ends for drawing them together,
said circular bodyhaving an elongated slotbetween the diverging ends, a bolt adapted to work in said slot and headed, and a recess communicating with said slot for the reception of the head of the bolt.
3. A device of the class described including a circular body adapted to embrace a terminal post, the ends of the body being normally separated and diverging outwardly of the body, means in connection with the diverging ends for drawing them together, said circular body having a recess formed therein for the reception of the head of a bolt and having also an elongated slot cominunicatingwith the recess to receive the shank of the bolt, the

4s. A device of the class described comprising a split clamp adapted to embrace a terminal post; said clamp having an elongated slot formed in its side and also having tion around the terminal post to which air;-

A device of the class described comprising in combination a split clamp adapted to embrace a terminal post, said clamp having an elongated slot formed in its sides, and a bolt adapted to- Work in said slot and be screw-threaded in the tip of a circuit wire, there being a recess formed on the inner side of said clamp for the reception of the head of said bolt.
6. A terminal post connection including a clamp having an elongated slot formed in its side and a recessed portion formed in its inner side wall and having an opening com municating with the slot, and a member for connection with a tip of a circuit wire and having a head mounted in the recessed portion and provided with an annular reduced portion of a diameter slightly less than the width of the slot.
7. A connection of the class described ineluding a circuit wire connector; and a member carrying the connector-comprising a split ring adapted for clamping engagement with a terminal post and characterized by having an elongated opening intermediate its ends slidably interengaging with the end of the connector to alow the clamp to be rotated circumferentially about the post without changing the posltion of said MAX BROWN.
