,Application filed September i0, 1921.
To all fwfsom may concern:
Be it known that l, loi-1N VANDERKAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county oi Cuyahoga and State oic GhiO, have invented certain new and useful improvements iii Soundilepio ducing Machines, oi' which the *following is a specification.
This invention relates to sound reproducing machines, and the object of the intenu tion is to provide an exceptionally simple machine adapted to be produced and sold as a toy at a relatively loiv cost and -in which the amplifying horn is constructed in a tier-.lar Way to support the tone nlec le and to reproduce sounds, using adisk` record.
in the accompanying drawings, Fig. l is i plan view of my improved soundreproducing machine, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sec ion oil the body of the machine. Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section, o t the machine. Fig. hi is a horizontal sectional view ot the sound reproducing or ainplii'yine; horn, Ion line i-1loi' Fig. 5, and Fig. 5 isa vertical sectional view longitudinally of the horn. Fig. 6 is a cro-ss section of a horn on line 6 6 of Fig. 5, showing the tone arm and needle. Fig. 7 is a reduced view ot the blank which is folded to provide the sound transmitting horn.
The invention comprises a relatively small boi; or cabinet Q Which is substantially square and formed ivitli a Wooden top and bottoni and e, respectively, united together at each corner by round Wooden p H-ts 5, and the tour sides of the box are `formed of a single sheet oi relatively thin metal snugly sleeved over 'the corner posts. li crank shaft G for a Wooden roller 7 entends through openings in opposite -sides `of the boit, the rller being located at one side of a vertical shaft S Which is journaled centrally Within the upper and lower Wooden plates Send fi respectively. Shaft 8 also comprises a n'ooden roller, and an elastic band or belt 10 eucircles the same and is driven by thecrank roller '7. One or more elastic bands iiiay be employed between said rollers.
'lhe upper end oit vertical shai't 8 projects through top piece 3 and supports a relatively heavy metal disk l1 'fastened to the shaft by heading the shaft. and the head l2 forms a projection centrally ot the disk whereby a disk record 13 is adapted to be held in place upon metal disk 11.
Serial No. 499,54,
A round standard l-l, entends upvJ/'ai ily from yone corner of bosr 2 at one side ot the periphery oit disl; ll, and a soundaeproducing and transmitting horn is adapted to be removably and rotatably engaged with the upper end oit said post. l-iorn l is made oi a single sheet of relatively stili paper, liber, or cardboard which. cut to provide an arcuate ror sector portion 16 and a straight t tiene 1'1", and this blank is adapted to be i @led on a straight radial line i8 to provine a horn of substantially semicircular shape in cross section, one side being left substantially dat although also partly curved or bulging at a point intermediate its ends Where a curved tone arm 2l is inserted and atixed in place vertically through slots Within the top and bottom sides of the curved wall at its tapering end. Tongue Il' is doubled back upon itself` to provide a round loop 22 normally oblong in cross section except when sleeved over round standard 14': upon which it fits With a slight friction but nevertheless suiiicieiitly loose to turn upon the post. A small metal clip 23 fast-ens the folded end of tongue l? Where doubled bacli upon itself, and a straight metal binding strip 24 extends the full length Iof the base edge of the tongue and the blank and secures the abutting border porti-ons of the folded parts of the horn together. This strip also stililens this poi'- ti'on of the horn,` and the lower end ot arm 2l projects tl'irough the curved side of the horn at one side ot' strip 24e Where a needle 25 is adapted to be inserted in the tapering needle socket 2li which is formed at the eX- treme bottom end el the tone arm. The middle portion of the tone arm is in the form `oi? a round hump which is adapted to bear against the rear Wall 28 of the horn. rifhis rear Wall 23 is flat except when the tone arm is inserted to bear against it whereupon it iieiied slightly on curved lines at the smaller tapering end of the horn as seen in Fig. G. ln operation when the crank of the machine is turned to rotate the record at a given speed the needle will impart its vibratory movement to the tone arin and to Wall 28 of the horn, thereby reproducing the sound recorded on the disk record and amplifying it also.
lWhat l claim is:
l. A sound-reproducing machine, comprising a base in combination with a sound- (lll reproducing and amplifying horn mounted upon said base, a needle-supporting arm eX- tendingthrough Said horn having a bnlged portion in vibrating engagement. with a portion of the Wall thereof.
2. A sound-reproducing machine, comprising a base, a. sound-reproducing horn of relatively stiff flexible material supported on said base, said horn having a normall;T flat wall, and a needle supporting arm extendingthrongh said horn having a lateral offset engaged with said Wall of said horn and adapted to maintain said Wall in a flexed curved positron.
3. A sound-reproducing and amplifying 15 loop and a needle Supporting arm extending 20 through said horn having a curved portion intermediate its end engaged with one Wall of Said horn near its doubled extension.
