I I I l I I I INV ENTOR ATTORNEY F. A. WALKER. snmme DEVICE FOR TALKING MACHINES. APPLICATION FILED JULY 31, 1920- 1,379,493, Patented May 24., 1921.
2 SHEETSSHEET 2.
WITNESS;
TATE
FRANK A. WALKER, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK.
STARTING DEVICE FOR TALKING-MACHINES.
Application filed July 31, 1920.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK A. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Starting Devices for Talking-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in phonographs and has for an object the provision of means whereby the brake which controls the, operation of the turn table will be automatically released. as the tone arm is moved in a direction toward the starting point of the record.
Another object is the provision of means of this character which is simple in construction and operation, may be applied to phonographs now 1n use and which may be used with slight modifications in phonographs of various styles and design.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure l is a top view of a portion of a phonograph showing the tone arm and turn table, with the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the member which is carried by the tone arm.
Fig. l is a similar View showing the brake arm carried member.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the turn table of a phonograph which carries a record 11, the turn table being revolved by any suitable power and being provided with the usual brake (not shown), the latter being operated to stop the rotation of the turn table through the medium of an arm 12. E
The tone arm which is indicated at 13 can ries at its outer end the usual sound box or reproducer 14, the arm 13 being capable Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24:; 1921.. Serial No. 400,353.
of pivotal movement to permit the needle and the reproducer to travel toward and away from the center of the record. The foregoing is of the usual or any preferred construction.
The invent-ion resides in the provision of means for releasing the brake as the needle is being positioned at the starting point of the record and for this purpose includes a curved arm 15, having one end secured to the arm 12 of the brake. Secured to the tone arm 18 is another arm 16, the latter being shown as including downwardly extending vertically disposed portion 17 and a substantially right angular portion 18, one arm of which is in the form of a combined curve. The free end of the extension 18 is provided with a lug or lip 19 which is adapted to engage a convened edge of the arm 15 as the tone arm 13 is swung outward. This engagement will move the brake arm 12 and the brake will he thus automatically released.
It is of course apparent that the invention may require minor changes in its shape and form to adapt it to different machines and the right is reserved to make such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim, the herein shown and described form of the invention being only one of many way in which it can be Having described the invention what is claimed is The combination with a phonograph having a tone arm and a brake, of a curved arm secured to the brake and an arm secured to the tone arm and engageable with the brake arm for automatically releasing the same when the tone arm is moved in a direction toward the starting point of a record, the last mentioned arm including a downwardly extending vertically arranged portion having one end secured to the tone arm, a laterally extending substantially right angular extension located at the opposite end and a lip carried at the free end of the lateral extension for engagement with the brake arm.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature.
FRANK A. lVALKER.
