Be it known that I, lVIAn'riN J. Linn, a citizen of the United States of America,- residing at IZirminghain, in the 'co-nnty of Jefferson and State of Alabama have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condensers, of which the following in a specification.
My invention relates to a steam condenser oi the counter-current type.
My condenser contemplates the introduction of the exhaust steam through a concentric bottom pipe which forms one of the principal supports for the condenser body and opens upwardly thereinto near the bottom of the condenser body.
My invention further contemplates the provision of a hood or donie set over the top of the steam inlet pipe and having a niarginal flange which depends below the top level of the steam pipe; In this way I obtain a uniform annular distribution of the entering steam and I cause it as it enters to be directed downwardly and outwardly towards the bottom of the condenser.
My invention further contemplates the utilization of the hood or donic as a wier from which the water overflows and falls in streams through the narrow i'narg'nal passage in which the entering steam flows with a reverse bend before entering the main condensing space above the hood and completing its first pass.-
My invention further contemplates the provision-of an intermediate wier .SUbStflll nan-y spaced above and concentric with the t cal slots in its side wall which discharge the water in closely spaced sheets between which the steam is scrubbed in each pass;
My invention also contemplates the provision of what I term a tripod support for the condenser, two supports being formed by the steam pipes and the other support being formed by the water pipe.

This ring supports the brackets 25 that are attached to the marginal wall of the wier 26 that is formed by a shallow pan, the bottom of which is covered with closely associated holes 27 through which part of the water entering the pan is discharged in the form of a shower onto the top oithe hood. The marginal wall of this wier is provided with closely associated vertically elongated slots '28 which discharge the surplus water in jets which are closely spaced and adapted to repeat the scrubbing action obtained from the jets overflowing from the hood slots 22 and annular flange 24s. The top section 2 is provided with an integral shoulder 29 which supports the upper wier 30, to which water is supplied by the pipe 11 and from which it overflows through the top annular series of elongated slots 31. which jet into the pan 26 and give' the steam and gases a final scrubbing for their last pass to the pipe 17. v I
In assembling my invention, the hood and pipe section 6 are lowered by means of a hook 32 onto the bottom section 4 and bolted thereto, and after the section 3 is bolted to the bottom section 4, the ring 24 carrying the pan 26 is set on its flange and the upper section 2 is then bolted in place,after which the wier 30 is set in place and'the top 1 bolted in position. The water and steam being admitted in ordinary course, the condensing operation is as follows:
The entering steam is spread by the point 20 of the dome and is discharged downwardly into the space 23 where it must make a reverse turn and pass upwardly throughthe jets of water escaping through the slots 22 of the hood wier. This constitutes the first pass after which the uncondensed steam flows inwardly into the open and unobstructed space between the hood and the pan These jets flow downwardly 26 which constitutes the main condensing space and is there acted upon first by the water jets from wier 24 and then by the shower of water falling throughout the entire space through the holes 27. From this space the steam, after making its second pod support of the condenser, by means of its space- d bearings 9, 10 and 12, reduces the cost of its base support to a minimum and affords great stability.
In Fig. 6 I show a modified type of my invention in which the brackets 32 on the steam inlet pipe support a curved dome 33 having radial ribs 3% which increase in thickness towards the base of the dome. The water in this construction enters through a port 35 and overflows from the top wier 36 onto the conical dome 37 from which it falls onto a downwardly sloping shelf 38 that discharges it onto the top center of the dome 33. The steam makes the same number of passes as in Fig. 3 but the sheets of water offer greater resistance to it than the vertical jets and there is absent the shower arrangement which is effective between the second and third passes of the steam. The dome arrangement is most elfectiv-e in the first pass of the steam and the ribs 3 L break up the water so as to giveit the effect of jets.
This invention is not intended to be restricted in scope to the specific embodiments shown, but contemplates such modifications as come within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a steam condenser of the countercurrent type, a cylindrical condenser body having a concentric steam inlet entering its bottom, a top wier having a water supply for marginal jet slots, a perforated spray pan disposed to receive the discharge from said slots and to discharge a shower through the central portion of the condenser body,
a wier adapted to receive said shower and having a bottom forming a dome designed designed to produce a reversal of direction of flow of the steam, and means comprising a central shower pan and marginal wiers to direct spaced falling bodies of water through the space above and surrounding the said dome.
3. A condenser of the character described, comprising a top wier having deep narrow marginal slots, a shallow pan disposed to receive the overflow from the upper wier and having its bottom provided with closely associated shower openings and also having marginal slots, an annular wier to receive the marginal jets overflowing from said pan, a lower pan to receive the margi nal overflow from the annular wier and the shower falling through the openings in the upper pan, a bottom pipe discharging the entering steam upwardly against the lower pan, and depending marginal flanges on said pan which spread the entering steam into a downwardly and outwardly flowing annular sheet.

A condenser of the character described, comprising a top wier having deep narrow marginal slots, a shallow pan disposed to receive the overflow jets from the upper wier and having its bottom provided with shower openings and also having marginal jet slots, an annular wier to receive the mar ginal els overflowing from said pan and l1avmg marginal jet slots, at lower pan below said wier to receive the marginal overflow jets from the annular wier and also the shower falling through the openings in the upper pan, a bottom pipe discharging the entering steam upwardly against the lower pan, and depending marginal flanges on said pan which spread the entering steam into a downwardly and outwardly flowing annu iar sheet, there being in the marginal wall of the lower pan deep narrow vertical slots to jet the water in thin closely associated spaced sheets through the clearance between the depending marginal flange of the lower pan and the condenser wall.
