Be it known that I, STEWART H. Hears HORN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Short Hills, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Shade Roller, of which the following is a specification;
The invention relates to shade rollersand more particularly to spring shade rollers which are arranged vertically instead of horizontally as in window shade rollers, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such use and may be carried out in connection with any type ofdrum or roller on which a flexibleelement may be wound and unwound.
The object of the invention is to produce a tubular roller of great strength and at a low cost.
A further object is to provide means, other than the material of the flexible element, for supporting the same on the roller.
A further object is to provide means whereby the flexible element will not be injured or destroyed by accidental removal from the roller.
These and further objects will more fully appear in the following specification and accompanying drawings considered together or separately.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the. drawings, the invention is shove a applied-t a ve t a ly a ran d roller, for use in bridging the bellows of railroad car vestibules.
The roller 1 is illustrated as a sheet metal cylinder with a groove 2 extending longiis not a cylinder its longitudinal edges will be spaced apart forming a gap extending the length of the lining. The lining may be squeezed to reduce its more or less cylindrical diameter to somewhat less than that of the bore of the tube 1; it may then be inserted in the tube, the grooved portion of the latter lying in the gap between the longitudinal edges of the reinforcing lining. The elasticity of the lining-v will cause the same to tightly engage within the bore of the ,tube.
Secured in any suitable manner at one end of the tube 1 is a cap 4 having a cen tral opening which forms a bearing for a spear 5 of rectangular cross section. The cap 4 is provided with a notch 6 in line with the groove 2.
The opposite end of thetube 1 is enclosed by means of a cap? notched as is the cap 4, but completely encloses its end of the tube. The cap 7 carries the usual pintle 8, and is provided with an annular rim 7.
In connection with the roller 1 above described is employed a screen 9 of heavy cloth. One vertical edge of the screen is hemmed to form a pocket, in which is inserted a stout wire rod 10. The rod is of greater length than the screen and one end projects below the-bottom thereof.

In operation the screen is made up with the rod 10, batten 11 and fixture 12 in position. The rod 10 may besecured against longitudinal movement in any desired manner.

The unwinding of the screen will wind thespring 14 or the roller 1 and the screen will'remain taut notwithstanding any move-- ments of the cars relatively to each other."
When the 'cars'are uncoupled the loop 12 will be cast off the shackle,and the screen will be automatically wound upon the roller 1 by means of the spring l l. Should the attendant fail to cast oil? the loop lQ, or
should the cars become uncoupled accidently duringtransit, the loop 12 w'ilbremain fast to the. shackle, and as't he :oars part, the screen will be unwound from the irolleriand' the rod 10 will be pullcdfrom the slot 2 without destroying the screen.
The invention may be employed in conneotion with window shade rollers to-pre vent tearing the. shade if pulled down'to'o far, it a being. understood that: when used as:
a window shade roller, the oap'4: will carry the usual pawls adaptedto cooperate with a locking notch carried by the spear 5;
