Beit known that I, JOHN Emana, a citizen of the Republic of Czechoslovakia (who has declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the Unite'd States), and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Razors, of which the following is a full, clear, and' exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in safetyl razors, and it consists in the. combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed. e
An objectI of my invention is to provide a safety razor in which the head may be instantly removed from the handle portion in a single operation, thus freeing the bladefrom the razor without the necessity of unscrewing the .handle -from the head which ,is customary in the ordinary type 'of razor.
A further object of my inventionV is to provide a device of the character described .in which the blade may be flexed solas to dispose the cutting edges thereof at the desired angle;
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described in whicha reservoir is provided beneath the blade so as to retain the waste matter, thereby obviating the-clogging of the waste matter about the comb and cutting edge of the razor. 1
A further object of my invention is to Aprovide a device fof the character described in which there are only three separable parts when disassembling the razor for cleaning, these parts being the head portion, the blade, and 'the handle portion.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which has novel means for releasing the comb portion from the handle when -it is desired to pack the razorv into a small space.
A further object. of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which has positive means for locking the head portion to the handle.
A further object of my inventionis to provide a device vof the character described which is relatively 'simple in construction, and which is durable and eicient for the purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accom.- pany-lng drawings, forming part of this` application, in which- 4 Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device,

In 'carrying out my invent-ion, I provide a handle portion 1 which has a bore 2 therein that is'reduced at 3 so as'to-provide a seat for a push 'button 4. The' handle 1 is connected to a comb 5 by means of a tubular member 6. Asclearly shown in Figure 1, the member 6 is rigidly vsecured to the handle l and has its upper end .fashioned into 'spring catch members 7 that are adapted to enter an annular groove 8 in the bottom of the comb `portion 5. The free ends of the catch members 7 are provided with shoulsection along the line JL-4 .ders 9 which engage with the inwardly exmember 6, and which is adaptedto move the catch members 7 inwardly so as to release the member 6 from the comb 5 when the sleeve 11 is moved so as to cover the catch members 7. lVhen the sleeve 11 Ais disposed at the end of the member 6, the member 5 may be readily removed from the member 6, whereby the razor can be packed in a small space. The member 5 is4 adapted to carry a blade 12. The blade 12 is flexed by a head portion 13, whereby the person usingr the de-v vice may flex the blade so as to dispose the cutting edges of the blade in the ldesired angle. As heretofore stated, when the sleeve 11 is moved toward the free end of the member 6, it causes the catch members 7 to move toward each other so as to. release the comb 5 from the member 6. lVhen the head-13 is disposed upon the comb 5, the threaded shank 15 of the head enters the free endof It will be noted that this end of the member 6 is internally threaded, the threads on the member 6 being adapted to engage with the threads on the shank 15 so as to hold the head 13 in place. Then the head 13 is disposed in place, af-move ment of the. sleeve 11 toward the coml1`5 lwill cause the catch members 7 to free the v member 5, but before this is done, the catch members 7 will engage with the shank 15 to hold the latter in place.
In this manner, the head 13 is secured to the member 6 before the member 5 is released by the catch members 7. The head 13 holds the comb 5 in place. In releasing the. head 13 from the member 6, the movement of the sleeve 11 away from the comb 5, causes the catch members'7 to be opera-V4 tively connected to the member 5 before the head 13 is released. member 5 is 'carried asa unit with the member 6 when the head 13 is released from the member 6. The handle 1 carries a novel locking. mechanism which isv adapted'to prevent any movement of the sleeve 11 after it is once moved toward the free end of the member 6'. The sleeve 11 can only be moved when the push button 4 is pressed. "The mechanism which operatively connects the push button 4 with the sleeve 11 is clearly disclosed in Figures 1 and fork-shaped lm'ember 16 is disposed within the member 6 and is rigidly secured 'to the portion 1 ofthe handle by means of a pin 17. LocksY ing prongs 18 of the member 16are slidably dis osed in the slots`19 of the member 6 and) are adaptedto move outwardly so as vto be-disposed in an annular groove 2O of the sleeve 11. The prongs 18 are adapted to engage with a shoulder of the groove 20 so as to prevent movement of the sleeve 11 away from the member 5. Means for moving the prongs 18 inwardly In this manner, the
22 upon which the member 21 rides when actuated by the push button 4 so as to swing the prongs 18 toward `each other, thereby releasin the sleeve 11.
A `spring 23 bears against the lower end 'of the member 6 and rests upon outwardly extending lu 24 of the member 21. The spring yieldmgly holds the member 21 against the push button 4, thus causing the push button to be held in extended position.
From this construction; it' will be apparent that when the push button 4. is moved inwardly, it'will move the member 21.so as to cause the inner end of the member to slidably engage with the cam edges 22 of the prongs 18, whereby the prongs 18 vice is constructed sov that' there will be a minimum number of `parts when it 1s taken a 'art for cleaning. It will be noted that on y the head 13, the blade 12, and the handle are the partswhich are separated from' each other when the device -is cleaned. As heretofore stated, the handle carries the member 5 when the head 13 is removed. The device may be quickly assembled with only one turning of thehandle being re quired. In the ordinary safety razors, the handle is turned through a great number of revolutions so as to cause the head to flex the blade 12- to -a sufficient angle. lVith my present form of the device, it is merely necessary to placethe blade upon the member 5 and dispose the head 13 in position i2 that the shank 15 thereof enters the memr 6. The moving of vthe vsleeve 11 toward the member 5 causes the catch member 7 to engage with the shank 15, thereby holding thev head 13 in place. It will be observed that the sleeve 11 is positively locked against accidental movement in this form of the device.
In Figure 6 I have shown a modified form of the device. This form is identical with the form heretofore described, except that the locking mechanism for positively holding the sleeve 11 in closed position is not used. This form of the device does away with the member 16, the member .21, the spring 23, and the push button 4. The other parts of the device are identical with the parts heretofore described in the preferred form ofthe invention, and will therefore 'need no further-description. The operation of this form of the device is practically identical to the operation of the preferred form. In this form of the device, the sleeve 11 is frictionally held in place and is` not locked in place by the prongs 18. In this form of the device, as in the preceding form, the' member 5 1s wcarried by the handle 1, even though the head 13 is removed. To release the member 5, the sleeve 11 has to first be moved away fromthe memberA 5, and then to bel moved toward the member 5 after the head .The device provides a simple mechanism whereby the blade 12 may be readily se- -cured in place with only one rotation of the handle instead of a number of rotations as is usuallymequired with the ordinary razor. Furthermore, the device is simple in construction, compact, and is not likely to easily get out of order. l The catch members 7 provide a novel means for holding the member 5 inplace when the head 13 is removed and for also holding vthe head 13 on the device. The spacin of the blade 12 from the member 5 provi es a reservoir between the blade 12 and the member v5 which is adapted to receive the waste matter. The cutting edges of the blade 12 are therefore kept clear of waste matter while the device is being used for shaving.
lIn Figure 7 I have shown another modified form of the-device.'` In this form of the device, the sleeve 11 is extended so as to take the place of the handle v1, in Figure 1, of
the device. In `this modified form of `the device, the handle 30- extends from the comb portion to the cap 31.`v The cap 31 is secured to the handle 30 by-any means, suchV key 37 which slides in a slot 38 in the push l button 33,-thereby preventing a rotationof the push button 33 with respect to the cap 31.
Fromthis construction it Will be observed that When the lpush button 33 is moved inwardly, the tubular member 32 is moved outwardly `from the opposite end -of the handle 30 and the catch members 39 of the member 32 swing outwardly. This movement releases the catchmember 39 from the shank 15 of thehead 13. When it is desired to again secure the handle 30 to the comb portion 5 and the l1ead13, it is merely necessary to insert theshank 15 of the head' 13 in the threaded bore o f the member 32.
'The handle 30 is now ras ed and is moved toward the comb 5. This movement continues until the end of the member 32 engages with the comb 5, whereupon further movement of the handle 30 wi1l.cause the handle to move over the catch members 39 and-cause them to swing inwardly to grip the shank 15. The handle 30 may now be rotated and'will rotate the member 32 so as to tighten the-handle onto the comb 5. As
