TOOL.
Application filed May 12, 1924.. Serial No. 712,849.
1 0 (M 40 tom it may concern:
Be it known that I. WILLIAM H. TonnUN- run, a citizen of the United States residue at Picher. in the county of Ottawa and tate of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools, and more particularly to metal punches and holders therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide means positively retaining a punch in a holder against vertical movement.
In the present invention, I provide handle torn'ied of substantially non-resilient metal having an opening in one end for the. reception of the tool, the opening being of substantially the same size as the tool, and I further provide a lateral bore in the handle intersecting the main opening, the lateral here being adapted to receive a clamping bolt and the opening being adapted to receive a tool having a portion of one edge cut away to receive the portion of the bolt.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure l is a plan vow of the holder.
Figure 2 is a central vertical sectional view on line 2 5?, of Figure 1, showing the tool in place and,
F gure 3 is a perspective view of the tool and holder.
Referring to the drawings the reference numeral 1 designates generally the holder or handle portion of the tool which. shown, is provided with a rih 2 at its edge. The handle is provided with a central longitudinal slot 3. forming a pair of arms l, which may he adjusted toward each other. These arms are provided with recesses 5 on the'r adjacent faces forming a main aperture or opening for the reception of the tool. The arms are provided with a lateral bore 6 which, as shown in Figure 2 ot the drawings, intersects the main aperture. A bolt 7 is arranged in the bore 6 and a. nut 8 is placed on the bolt.
In connection with the handle, I employ a punch 9 or other tool, the upper portion of which is of substantially the same cross sectional area as the tool receiving opening 5. As shown. the lower end of the tool is circular in cross section, as at 10, and is pointed, as at 11. The intermediate portion of the tool is provided with roughened surfaces 12, and it is further provided with recess 13 in one edge adapted to receive a portion of the clamping bolt 7.
I In constructing the tool, the main bore 5 is first cut in the handle portion and the tool inserted. The tool fits the main opening tightly, and must be driven in. The lateral bore 6 is then out with the tool in place, forming the recess 13, and the clamping bolt 7 inserted. It will be apparent that the engagement of a porton of the clamping bolt in the recess 18 prevents vertical displacement of the punch or other tool when in use.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a perferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement or" parts may be re sorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
I claim:
In 21v device of the character described. a handle having a longitudinal slot extending inwardly from one end, said handle being provided with an opening adjacent its slotted end; and being further provided with oransverse hore intersecting sa d opening. a tool received in saidopening and a clamping bolt arranged in said bore said tool beinc; providedwith a recess adapted to receive a portion of said bolt.
In testimony whereof, I aftix my signature.
WILLIAM H. TODI-IUNTER.
