Supporting Carriages and Guiding Means,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a printing tabulator of the kindl adapted to be controlled by perforated cards, and relates more particularly to matter divided from my co--pending application Serial No. 158,142 filed March 28, 1917, for printing tabulators.
The invention herein described relates more particularly to the paper supporting carriage and the paper guiding means o f said printing tabulator; and, therefore, only as much of the printing` tabula-tor is described herein as is necessary to show the connection between the matter of the original application and the matter divided out. v lhile herein and in said application minute details of one of many possible embodiments ofthe invention are described, the invention is not limited to these since various changes may be made in the details of construction and combination'without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. v.
One object of the invention is tov improve generally apparatus of this'kind.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide an economical and etlicient means for effecting the printing by the reciprocation of the paper carriage when the Vprinting type have been set.
yAnother object is to provide convenient means-fory ,at will displacing` the printing carriage, laterally relative t0 the type so that substantially -any part of the paper may be brought to the type.
Another object is to provide a new and improved method of mounting the paper supporting rolls. y :Another object is to provide an economical and efficient platen'for pressing the paper against `the type.

In said co-pending application, there is shown a printing tabulator which is adapted to be actuated by perforated cards, which in their passage through the machine operate elements for setting up type commensurate with the designations on the card and actuate an accumulating mechanism for accumulating therein the data recorded on the card perforations whereby the total accumulated data may be computed and then printed by the printing elements of the machine. f
The embodiment comprises, as shown herein a lower framel (Fig. 1) in which the main driving` shaft Q, is mounted, a card feeding mechanism, and a card analyzing mechanism; and an upper frame 5, in which the accumulating and printing mechanism are mounted.
The cards to be analyzed are disposed in a suitable receptacle and are fed by a card picker mounted at the bottom of such receptacle to the feed rollers 7, from which the card is fed between they die plate 8 and guide plate 9 in which position the several designations on the card register with the pins 10 of the vertical reciprocatable pin boX 1l, which pin box is raised after a card is positioned between such plates 8 and 9 and the pins 10 which find perfor-ations in the card being analyzed pass upward therethrough and engage extension pins 12 which, in turn, will actuate registering stops. After the card has been so analyzed by the pins 10, it willbe discharged into a suitable receptacle.
Power is transmitted from the main drive Shaft 2 to a shaft 17 by means of a transmission shaft 18. Y
The shaft 17 is provided with a plurality ofi cams from which are operated'4 as explained in the cti-pending application, the various mechanisms of the tabulating machine 19, of which it suffices here to say that thesev operate the type segments 20 (Fig. so that the type 21 will be positioned to print. items in accordance with the setting by the cards of the pins 1() and 12; and print the resulting totals, upon a sheet of paper brought against the type bythe printing carriage now to be described.
The printing carriage, designated genen ally by reference numeral 28 (Figs. 2, 3 and. 4)' is located on the rear of the printer taliulator base, to the rear of the tabulating machine 19.
The carriage 28 which consists of mechanism for controlling the movement of the paper rolls andv printing on the salne is mounted between twoV plates 47 which are tiedk together by means of tie-rods 48 and Said carriage 28 is carried at each end on an L-shaped support member 35 which slides in a slot 34 in bracket 31 and also has a roller 36 on the end of its horizontal armwhich roller moves in anI opening 37 formed in bracket 29. On the upper end of the vertical portion 38 of said member 35` is a connecting shaft 39. Mounted on the shaft 89, between said members 38, are Vtwo* levers 87 which are also mounted on a shaft- 89'carried in bracket 31. These levers 87 serve in the manner to be later described to give a reciprocating motion to the carriage so that it can be moved against the type sectors 2l in order t0 print.
Another pair of supports 42 which are approximatelyv Lshaped, are connected near the upper ends of their vertical arms to shaft between the'two levers 87, and have forward extending arms 44 curved to come directly under the tie-rod 48 so that they support the tie-rod and the carriage. The supports. 42 are mounted, at the point where the vertical and horizontal arms moet, on the shaft 40..

In the operation of the machine it is sometimes desirable to shift the carriage longitudinally relatively to the type sector units, so that the printing columns may occupy various desired positions upon the sheet of paper. Means for accomplishing this will now be described:

The printing` is accomplished by the forward movement of the paper supporting mechanism which movement brings the paper against type 21 of the type sectors.
This is accomplished by means of the upper and lower carriage actuating levers 87 and 88.(Fig. 3)' pivoted on the lever shaft S9 carried by the brackets 31. The upper and lower actuating levers are both pivotall'y mounted on said shaft 89 and when in printing position are locked togethei` as will be explained, and are oscillated by means of the engagement of Jthe cam roller 90 engaging in the cam groove 91 of the printing cam 92 carried on the cam shaft 17. The actuating levers give one complete cycle of oscillation epee for every revolution of the cam shaft 11.
The locking above referred to is accomplished by means of locking cones 95 which are shown in unlocked position in Fig. a and must be moved to the right of said figure to lock said upper and lower levers against relative movement. rlhese cones engage in, and when locked, hold in alinement the openings 98 and 99 of said upper and lower levers, and are carried on the cone supporting shaft y100 yieldably drawn to unlocked position by means of the tension spring 101 secured between the end of said shaft and a cross piece 102 (F ig. 3) disposed across the opening 104 in the bracket 31. The vopening 10d. is large enough for the insertion of the cone shaft and cones when assembling the machine. These cones may be moved to locking position by means of the bell crank lever 105 fulcrumed on the base of the machine and provided at its upper end with spaced ea s 106 engaging a transverse pin 10T in the cone supporting "shaft 100. This lever is actuated by means of a link 108 pivoted at its lower end to said lever 1 5, and at its upper end to the locking lever 110 (Figs. 2 and 3) fulcrumed intermediately as at 111 on the cam shaft bracket 29. The locking lever 110 terminates in a manipulating end 112 (Figs. 2 and 9) received in a slot 114 of the locking platev 115, said slot being provided at `itsupper and lower parts with shoulderforming recesses 116 and 11. in which said manipulating end may be locked to retain said locking cones in either locked or unlocked position. When lock lever 110 is moved into locking position7 lever 87 will be moved by a movement of lever 88 and thereby the printing` carriage will be moved and the items set up by type segments AJ1 will be printed.
Now will be described the means for supporting the paper on the carriage.
On the paper roller shaft 60 journaledin the end plates'fl? (Figs. 3 posedva plurality of paper engaging means or rollers 118 each provided with afboss 119 8). Said brackets are held in spaced relation by means of sleeves 124C (Fig. 8) carried on said shaft 122. The lower part of each platen support bracket carries a forward projection 125 on which is secured as by means of a-screw 126, the platen support 127 having a recess in its forward end in which is carried the elastic platen block 128 of rubber or other suitable material which forms a paper backing means for the paper when it is pressed against the type.
The bushings 120 hold the paper rollers out of frictional contact with the platen brackets.Y The bushings and the paper rollers and all the parts rotatable on the paper roller shaft 60 are caused to rotate with said shaft by means of frictional engagement with each other brought about by the clamping of the screw 129 (Fig. 3) on said shaft.
.Between each adjacent pair of paper rollers are the upper and lower inner paper ls 190 and 131 (Fig. T) which form a continuation of the cylindrical surface of the paper rollers. When the carriage is moved forwardly toward the type .sectors the free end 'face 176'of the actuating arm 169 engages and pushes back the abutment shaft 170 against the action of the spring 175 until said end face clears said shaft and permits the` shaft and its bracket to be snapped back by the spring 175 until stopped by the shoulder 172.

While the paper is being fed and during; the time of printing, it is desirable that it be firmly held against the platensL 128. This is accomplished by means of a clamping. mechanism con'iprising a clamp bar 193 (Fig. 3). carried between the outer ends of the clamping levers 19st provided with intermediate longitudinal slotsA 195 loosely receiving the paper feed shaft whereby the paper clamp bar is adapted to move toward and from the paper. rollers 118 aswell as to pivot in relation` to said rollers. ylVhen by means'of the lever 110 the carriage has been set to a non-printing position so that the items accumulated and set up by the type 21 are not printed, it is still desirable' that the totals themselves be print-` ed. In order to accomplish this printing automatically, there is provided the automatic printing lock lever 257 (Fig. 4) pivotally mounted on the bracket 258 fixed to the shaft 89 tlie upper end of which lever engages in a notch 260 the lowerend engaging` a transverse pin 261 in the printing lock shaft 100.
lhen the carriage is shifted to the left, the bar 64 is moved therewith and carries the upperend of the lever 257 to the left whereupon the lower part of said lever, said printing lock shaft and the cones 95 are moved tothe left thus locking together the upper and lower printing levers 87 and 88 and effecting the printing.
From the foregoing, the operation of the printing carriage will be easily understood. Paper is inserted in the rear opening` between the outer shields 137 and the inner lower paper shields 131, and the paper' rolls 118 turned b v means of theknob 192 until the part on which it is desired first to print are opposite the platen blocks 128. If desired, the locking plate is unlocked and the carriage adjusted on the carriage rail and thev carriage relocked.

The tabulating machine is then started in operation as explained in thesaid copending application and the type is set and the accumulators accumulate. If the locking lever 1s .set in locked position the cams 92 cause the printing levers vand the carriage to re- K ciprocate and the printing is effected.
llfhen a total is taken the carriage is moved to theleft just before the printing by means of the total signal lever 241 engaging in the notch 240 of the locatingbar. If the locking lever 110 has not been set in printing position, the automatic levers 257 also cause the cones to look the printing lev rs and print totals when the totals are set up and printed.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a' carriage support; a paper support slidable and swingable on said carriage support and adapted to be moved into and out of locking engagement therewith. p l
2. 1n an apparatus of the character described, the combination of printing means; a carriage support adapted to be reciproycated toward and from the printing means;
a carriage rail supported on the carriage n support; a paper support slidable on said rail g and means interposed between said support wherebyv the paper support may be swung` int-o and out of locking engagement with the carriage support.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of printing means; a carriage support adapted to be reciprocated toward and from the printing means; a carriage rail supported on the carriage support; paper support slidable and adapted to swing on said rail; a locating bar mounted on one of said supports and provided with a plurality of openings; and plurality7 of locating brackets mounted on the other support and adapted to engage in and be locked in said holes.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a carriage support; Aa carriage rail; means supported on the carriage support and supporting said rail; and a carriage comprising parts provided with an opening receiving said rail and a slot furnishing passage for said means.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of printing means; a carriage support adapted to be reciprocated toward and from the printing means; a carriage rail; rail 'supports supported on the carriage support and supporting said rail; a paper carriage; and rail engaging brackets on said carriage and each provided with an opening receiving said rail and a slot furnishing passage for the rail supports for permitting the carriage to be slipped oli" the end of the rail.
6. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of printing means; a carriage support adapted to be reciprocated toward and from the printing means;
paper carriage; rail engaging brackets iXed on said carriage eachprovided with an opening receiving said rail and a slot comniuniyeating vvith^ the opening and furnishing passage Jfor the rail supports.; and ane-nw for locking the carriage to the support.
7. In an apparatus of the char eter described, the combination of printing means; a carriage support adapted to be reciprocated toward and from the printing means; a carriage rail; rail supports supported on the carriage support and supporting said rail; apaper support, rail engaging brackets fixed on said paper support each provided with an opening receivine said rail and a slot conmiunicating with the opening` and furnishing `passage for the rail supports` said brackets being slidable and swing-able on said rail; a locating bar mounted on one of said supports and provided with a `plurality ot openings; and plurality or' locating brackets fixed on the other support and adapted to engage in andibe locked in said holes.

In an apparatus of. the character described, the combination of paper rolls; printing` means; levers fulcrumed near said paper rolls and extending in opposite directions; means for moving said paper rolls toward said printing meanse vfor printing; lfeed rolls having journals jcurnaled on said levers; springs tensioned and connected directly between said journals; and means for actuating the levers.

In an apparat-us of the character described, the combination of a carriage support; a rail supported thereon; a carriage provided with a part having an opening receiving said rail for supporting the carriage, said part being adapted to be slipped off at the end of the rail and means for positively locking the carriage on the rail against endwise movement in either direction without detaching said rail.

In combination, a plurality of printing means adapted for simultaneous printing; a support; a paper carriage longitudinally adjustable on said support; means for positioning and locking said carriage in adjusted position and means for reciprocating said support toward the printing means for effecting the simultaneous printing.

In combination, groups of printing means laterally spaced apart and adapted for simultaneously printing; a support; a paper carriage longitudinally adjustable on said support multiples of the distance from one to another of said groups; means for positioning and locking said carriage in its adjusted position; and means for reciprocating said support for effecting said simultaneous printing.

In combination; a mechanism provided with a movable type carrier; a carriage associated with said type carrier whereby printing is effected; means for carrying a ribbon between said carrier and carriage for reciprocating said ribbon away out of reach or" said type; and means positioning said type when the ribbon is thus out of reach.

In combination, a tabulating mechanism provided with a plurality of movable type arranged for simultaneous printing in a straight line; a carriage reciprocatory to and from said type; means carried on the carriage for carrying a ribbon between said carriage and type; said ribbon being reciprocatory with said carriage away out of reach of said type; and means positioning said type when the ribbon is thus cutoff reach.

In combination, a tabulating mechanism provided with a` movable type carrier carrying a plurality of type confined to the same path; a carriage reciprocatory to and from said type; means carried on the carriage for carrying a ribbon between said carriage and type; said ribbon being reciprocatory with said carriage away out of reach of said type; and means positioning said type when the ribbon is thus out of reach.
