OIL PUMP.
Application filed January 6,1925. Serial no. 891.
proved oil pump provided with means af-- fording a rapid priming and a practical regulation of the output, while at the same time the inspection and cleaning of the pump,
will be much facilitated.
The said pump is chiefly adapted for the supplyof lubricators of the sight-feed type, and in this event the apparatus comprises a plurality of pumps operating upon a commpn oil tank, but the device according to the invention is obviously applicable to oil pumps of all types, irrespectively of their use and of the number of delivery conduits.
The appended drawing shows by way of example two constructional forms of the device according to the said invention.
Fig. 1 shows one constructional form of the device.
Figs. 2 and 3 are modifications.
As shown in Fig. 1, the said pump comprises a cylinder 1 co-operating with the piston 2 to which is secured a screwthreaded socket or hollow screw 3 engaged in a nut 1 which is mounted upon an eccentric strap or frame 5; the said piston comprises an extension or tongue 6 engaging by easy friction in a corresponding slot 7 of a second piston .8, or primingpiston, so that the two pistons are connected together as concerns their rotation.
The piston 8 is provided with acontrolling knob 9 by which it may be rotated together with the piston 2 in order to screw or unscrew the latter with reference to the nut 4, or to give the piston 8 a reciprocating motion when pumping by hand, for instance for priming the pump. The strap 5 is controlled by an eccentric 10 which is mounted upon the shaft 11; when the said shaft rotates, the eccentric 10 will alternately push the rear portion of thesaid strap in order to effect the uction, and the outer end of the piston 2 in .irderto effect the delivery.
The output of :the pump is regulated by turning the knob 9 in either direction so as to rotate the piston 2 and the screw 3; this will vary the space between the rear of the said eccentric frame and the outer end of the piston, so that the stroke of the piston can be regulated for the desired output.
and to facilitate the priming operation. A
spacing strip 13 elastic or not, is removably mounted upon the outer end of the piston, .and is thus interposed between the screw 3 and the eccentric 10; the said strip supports the wear of the eccentric and can be readily replaced when out of use.
The pump withdraws from the oil tank 14 through the medium of a ball-valve 15; and the delivery takes place through the clack valve 16.
The modification shown in Fig. 2 differs from the first form of construction by an arrangement of seats for the clack valves whereby the removal and inspection of the said valves will be facilitated. The pump cylinder 1 is provided at the lower part with a screw cap 17 serving to maintain a socket 18 in which are formed the seats of the two valves 15 and 16; said socket is traversed by the pistons 2 and 8, but the said pistons can be laterally removed, and in this event the socket 18 can be readily removed through the bottom together with the two valves for purposes of inspection. To this end the pump cylinder 1 comprises a stuffing box 19 which can be dismounted with facility for the removal of the piston 8; on the other hand, the frame 5 is so constructed as to be coupled to the shaft 11, and it may pivot hand the piston 8 is loosely engaged in the piston 2 and is provided with the stud 23 which is slidable in the slot 22 and serves to impart to the piston" 2 the movements of rotation which are given to the piston 8 by means of the knob 9.
Obviously, any other suitable connecting meansmaybe employed, for instance a square or polygonal aperture is formed in the piston 2 whilst the piston '8 comprises a co-operating projection which is loosely slidable in the said aperture.
In Fig. 2, the spring 12 is disposed at the exterior of the cylinder 1 and in the rear. of
the knob 9 instead of being placed within provided with a controlling knob 9.
The reciprocating motion of the piston 2 is produced by the cam 10 mounted on the shaft 11, and the delivery is obtained by means of said cam, while the suction is produced by means of the spring 25.
The knob 9 controls, through the medium of the piston 8,'the piston 2 as shown on the drawing and the movement is transmitted by means of a split-pinor a squareshaped end. The end of the piston 2 is in fact'formed by a square-shaped rod 26 on which the nut 4 can slide, this nut-being provided with a square-shaped bore, so that the parts 9, 8, 2 and 4 are secured together in the sense of rotation.
. The shoulder formed by the square-shaped end and the cylindrical part of the piston 2 bears against theinn'er part of the nut 4 in order to limit the course "of the piston during the suction.
The rotation of the knob 9 will cause the nut 4 to move forward and backward on the screw 24 in order to increase or to shorten the course of said piston andto increase or to decrease the delivery.
Having thus described my. process and apparatus, what I claim as new therein, and my own invention, is:
1. In an oil pump operated by a driving shaft, cylindrical pump body, a piston disposed therein, adjustable means for-actuating the said piston by the driving shaft, a second piston coaxial with the first-mentioned piston, means for actuating the second piston by hand from the exterior of the pump, means connecting the said pistons to gether in such manner that they will b longitudinally slidable but not revoluble upon each other, a suction valve, a delivery valve, and seats for the said valves formed in the said pump cylinder.
2. In an oil pump operated by a driving vthe said valves formed in the said said valves.
shaft, a cylindrical pump body, a piston disposed therein, a screw mounted upon the saidpiston, an eccentric strap, a cam cooperating therewith and keyed to the said driving shaft, said cam acting on one side uponthe said piston and on the other side upon the side of the strap opposite the said piston,
and a nut attached to the said strap and engaging the said screw, a second piston coaxial with the first-mentioned piston, means for actuating the second piston by hand from the exterior of thepump, means connecting the said pistons together in such manner that they will be longitudinally.
slidablebut not revoluble upon each other, a suction valve, a delivery valve, and seats for the said valves formed in the .pump' chamber. J g V 3. In an oil pump operated by a driving shaft, a cylindrical pump body, a piston disposed therein, a screw mounted upon the said piston, an eccentric strap, a cam cooperating therewith and keyed to the said driving shaft, said cam acting on one side upon the said piston 'and on the; other side upon the side of. the strap opposite the said piston, and a nut attached to the said strap and engaging the said screw, a secondpiston coaxial with the first-mentioned piston, a
milled knob secured to the outer end of the second piston, the first piston having a boredeout ortion and a slot, and the second piston eing provided with an extension which is slidable in the said bore of the first piston, a pin being mounted upon said extension and engaging the said slot, a suction valve, a delivery Valve, and seats for P p cylinder.
4. In an oil pump operated by a driving shaft, a cylindrical pump body, a piston disposed therein, a screw mounted upon the said piston, an eccentric strap, said strap having the shape of a hook which is disposed around the driving shaft, a cam cooperating with thesaid strap, and keyed to the driving shaft, said cam acting on one side upon the said piston andon the other side upon the side of the strap opposite the. i
said p ston, a nut pivoted to the said strap and engaging the said screw, a second piston coaxial with the first-mentioned piston, means for actuating the second piston'by hand from the outside of the pump, means connecting the said pistons together in such manner that they will be longitudinally slidable but not revol-uble upon each other, a suction valve, a delivery valve, and a socketv r'emovably mounted in the said pump body, said socket comprising seats for the In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name.
