AUTOMATIC BURRING ATTACHMENT.

To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,y ALFRED L. SovA, a citizen of the United States, residing at. F1int, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Burring l Attachments, of which the following is a speciication.
AThis invention relates to an automatic burring` attachment, and particularlyl to a construction adapted for application to a surface grinding machine or analogous mechanism and designed to remove the edge burr resulting from a grinding operation.
The invention is adapted for general application but is especially applicable in the grinding of pistonrings as under the present condition these rings after their discharge from the grinding machine must be separately treated to remove the edge burr thereon, which involves a material element of time and labor. I have therefore provided means for automatically burring the ring during the grinding operation and have yieldingly mounted the burrin-g tool so that a proper pressure is applied to the work and the tool ladapted to follow the edge contour thereof upon which it operates. .It is alsovdesirable to operate the burring tool in synchronism with the grinding operation and for that purpose means have been provided for the shifting of this tool into operative position by cooperation with a movable member of the grinding mechanism.
The invention hasv forl an object to provide a novel and improved construction whereby a burring tool is disposed to engage the Work during the operation of the surface grinding mechanism and thereby accomplish the comple-te resultby a single operation.

Other and further objects and advantages o-f the invention will. be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

The invention is adapted for application to various types of grinding o-r similar machines and is not confined in its application t-o any particular type of machine. The machine illustrated comprises essen- -tially a grinding or abrasive wheel 10 which is mounted for rotation in the usual manner and is carried by a casing'mounted for reciprocation, the wheel being enclosed by the usual shield 12 and the ground material being removed froml the lwork by means of a blast through the pipe 1'3. lIn this type of machine the grinding wheel rotates upon f i-ts axis and is also moved or reciprocated transversely. across the work. Cooperating with such a wheel is a work table 14 provided with apertures 15 which when used in connection with the grinding of pistou rings is adapted to receive the ring 17. A series of such rings are superposed within the feed rack 18 and the table 14 is suitably geared for intermittent rotation so that as an aperture 15 is presented beneath the lowermost ring in the rack it drops lnto contact with the table and is carried thereby into position beneath the grinding wheel. When in this position it is desirable to provide a rotary movement to the work ring which may be accomplished by any desired means suc-h as the magnetic chuck indicated at 19, and after the grinding operation the table feeds the work ring above a discharge chute 20 as indicated in Figure 1.
lVith the foregoing general arrangement of parts the attachment forming the subject of this invention is adapted to be conlbined for simultaneous operation and this attachment comprises a base 2l which is se cured upon any desired fixed part of the grinding machine as indicatedat 22 by means of boltsl 23 or other attaching devices. One end of the base 21 is bifurcated as at 24 and has mounted therein a tool car-V rier 25 which in the present instance is of a crank lever shape and pivoted at 26 upon the base. The horizontal arm 27 of this lever carries the tool holder 28 which is pivoted thereon at 29 andthe burring tool 30 is adjustably secured in position upon the liol'der by meansof fastening devices as indicated at 31'.
Interposed between the tool holder and carrier is a coiled tension spring 32 seated at its opposite ends in recesses in the respective members and tensioning the tool holder away from the carrier, which results in a yielding mounting of the holderso that when it is in contact rwith the work a proper pressure is applied while the tool is free to follow the contour of the work such as the piston ring 17. In the present instance the burr or overhang of metal resulting from the grinding operation at the upper inner corner of the ring is removed by contact with this tool and the yielding mounting thereof further permits the tool to follow the contour of work of either a curved or angular outline so that the field of usefulness of the invention is materially increased.
The tool carrier 25 is shifted into operative position by a piston member -33 which is connected thereto Vby a link 34 pivoted y upon the carrier at 35 and upon the piston at 36 while the piston is normally held in inoperative position by a tension spring 37 seated in a recess therein and bearing against a recessed block 3S upon the base. This piston operates within a' casing 39 of any desired type which is suitably lined to prevent friction. The piston also carries at its free end a bearing roller 40 mounted between lugs 41 thereon by means of a pivot pin 42. The base of the attachment is also provided with a bearing roller 43 carried by the pivot 44 disposed in a suitable bearing lug 45 located out of alignment with the piston roller, foi' a purpose to be described.
Various means may be used to automatically impart motion to the burring tool carrier from the grinding mechanism, dependent upon the character of machine to which it is applied. In the present 'nstance an operating arm 46 is adjustably mounted upon the reciprocating casing 11 for the grinding wheel and formed at its free end with an inclined face 47 which operates 'against'the hearing roller of the piston. The
disposition of the bearing rollers 40 and y43 out of alignment with each other facilitates the wcdging action against the piston in the reciprocation of this arm as the latter is held against lateral movement or,V spring-E ing while applying power to the plunger. 'lhe means used for adjustably mounting the operating arm 46 may comprise an L- shaped plate 4S the horizontal member 49 of which is slotted and secured to the reciprocating casing 11 while the vertical member 50 is similarly slotted and secured to a parallel member 51 from the arm 46. By this arrangement the operating arm may be longitudinally adjusted relative to the throw of travel imparted in the reciprocation of the grinding wheelv while a vertical adjustment may be obtained to properly dispose the arm relative to the bearing rollers for the plunger and to compensate for Wear of the abrasive wheel. The travel of the tool carrier is limited by a pin and slot connection 53.
It is believed from the foregoing description that the general operation of the machine -is apparent and it will be noted that as the grinding wheel is reciprocated toward the work the arm controlled thereby automatically forces the burring tool into yielding contact with the work so as to simultaneously remove the burr or edge of metal left from the grinding operation. Upon a retraction of this wheel the arm is withdrawn to a sufficient extent to permit the plunger to lift the burring tool out of contact with the work, as indicatedby dotted lines in Figure 2. The structure therefore presents means for accomplishing both the grinding and barring functions in a single operation by a simple attachment adapted for application to the ordinary type of surface grinding machines and in which the yielding mounting of the burring tool provides for its proper operative contact with the work and also for a free movement in following the contour thereof as the Work is rotated with the work ring incident to the grinding operation. The burr-ing tool also presents specific novelty in the construction and operation ofV its several parts by which the movement of the tool carrier is transmitted through a yielding medium to the tool holder and the actuating plunger automatically restored to noperatiye position when out of contact with the c operating actuating member from the grinding mechanism.
The specic construction of :the -several parts has been herein shown and described but the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit. of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. Lhe combination with a surface grinding machine comprising a metal working wheel and work holder, means for eifecting a relative feeding movement between the work and wheel, of a tool disposed to engage the work in said hol-der during the grinding operation, and means controlled by said feeding movement to automatically actuate said tool into operative position.
2. The combination with a surface grindling machine comprising a metal working wheel and work holder, means for eliecting a relative feeding movement between the work and wheel, of atool disposed to engage the work ,in said holder during the grinding operation, means controlled by said feeding movement to automatically actuate said tool into operative position, and means for automatically retracting said tool from such position. v y
3. The combination with a surface grinding machine comprising a rotating andreciprocating abrasive Wheel, of a burring tool disposed to engage the work during the operation of said wheel, and an operating member actuated inthe reciprocation of the wheel to engage said burring tool with the work.
4. The combination with a surface grinding machine comprising a rotating and reciprocating abrasive wheel, of a burring tool disposed to engage the work during the operation of said wheel, an operating member actuated in the reciprocation of the wheel to engage said burring tool with the Work, and a tension means for retracting said tool upon the Withdrawal of theoperating member. y

11. A burring device comprising a base, a cylindrical casing thereon, a plunger disposed in said casing, a tool carrier pivotally mounted at one end of said base and connected to said plunger, and a tool holder yieldingly mounted upon said carrier.

An attachment for grinding machines comprising a base adapted to be secured to a fixed part, a burring tool carried by said base and movable relative to the work during the 'grinding operation, and Ameans controlled by the grinding mechanism for shifting said tool into and out of operative position.

An attachment for grinding machines comprising a base adapted to be secured to a fixed part, a burring tool carried by said base and movable relative to the work during the grindingoperation, and reciprocatory means controlled in the movement of the grinding member for automatically shifting the burring tool into operative position during a reciprocatory movement of such grinding member.
