'UNITED STaTTs TATTTT @Trice EDMUND DERWENT, JR., OF ROOKFOBD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR .IO THOMAS Y DERVENT St SONS, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SULKV-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1579i E9, dated November 24, 1874', application tiled May 15, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND DERWENT, J r., of the city of Rockford, State of Illinois, have invented a Sulliy Attachment for Plows, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a sulky to which the common plow, or a plow prepared for the purpose, either right or left hand, and of any ordinary width of furrow, may be attached to enable the operator to ride; and consists in the construction, ar-
rangement, and combination of the several parts represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view, in which the seat is omitted. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is are formed with eyes to receive the axle G, on
which they are adjustable laterally for the purpose of placing the pole centrally over the draft of the plow in the use of plows of different widths of furrows, and also to adapt it to the use of either right or left hand plows, and are held in position by collars b, provided with set-screws, but may be held in position when adjusted by any suitable device, such as the common screw-staple. F is a segmen t-ratchet.
The lower end of one of its supports is secured to one of the curved bars D, and the other support is secured at its lower end to the 'axle O by screw-staple connection, and is adjustable with the curved bars D. Gr is a brace, secured to the pole E and to the horizontal central portion of axle C by screw-staple connection, and is adjustable thereon to bring the raising device centrally over the plow. H is a shaft, having its bearings in the rear support of segment-ratchet F and rear portion of brace G. K is a quadrant with grooved periphery, secured to shaft H, and is fitted with chain-connection c to plow-beam L, to which the plow M is attached. A lever, N, is also secured to Shaft H, and is fitted with lever spring-bolt, to engage in the teeth of the segment-ratchet. By means of these devices the plow may be raised, lowered, or held in any position desired within the limits of the devices. O is a plate, provided with a ball, d, on its under side, and is secured to the under side of beam L by bolts and clamping-bar. P is a crosshead, composed of two halves, fitted with one or more sockets, e, to receive ball d, in such a manner as to hold the plow in an upright position, and to permit of a free lateral swinging motion on the ball d as a pivot, and also to permit of a free rocking motion of the plowbeam lengthwise, the holes in the cross-head for the reception of the neck of the ball d being elongated transversely of the cross-head for the purpose, the different sockets e being for the purpose of applying plows of different widths of furrows. The cross-head P is also iitted to slide on the vertical portions a of axle C, the two halves being held together thereon by bolts.
These parts are more clearly shown in the sectional drawings at Figs. 4 and 5.
I have represented plate O as secured to the under side of the beam L; but it is evident that it may be secured to the upper side ofthe beam, and the cross-head P placed above it,
without departing fromthe principles of my invention.
Other modifications of the cross-head, designed to be applied to the vertical portions a ofthe axle O and to the plow-beam L by kingbolt connection, are clearly shown in section at Figs. 6 and 7, and at Figs. 8 and 9, and I deem it unnecessary to give a detailed dveseription thereof, as they will be fully understood.
B is a seat, supported upon brackets f, secured to the central horizontal portion of the axle G.
When it is desired to use a left-hand plow the carrying-wheels A and B must be reversed,
using A in place of B, and B in place of A, which the plow is attached by ball-and-socket and adjusting the curved bars D, ratchets F, joint, as and for the purpose set forth.
and brace Gr on the axle C, so as to bring the 2. The cranked axle A, cross-head l?, plate pole E and raising devices centrally over the and ball-joint O, and plow-beam L, in combidraft-line of the plow. nation with the raising and lowering devices,
I claim as my inventionas described, and for the purpose set forth.
1. The combination of the cranked axle A A having two parallel vertical portions, ce, sup EDMUND DERWENTY JR' ported on two carrying-Wheels, the cross-head Vfitnesses: P, fitted to slide vertically on the two vertical J ACOB BEHEL, portions a, of the axle, and plow-beam L, to RUFUs G. BAILEY.
