The hasp is retained in its closed or locked position by the sliding keeper 20 which is of substantially plate-like formation having the elongated slot 2l formed centrally therein for receiving the post 22 and tension spring 23 to be' described in detail at a later point. The upperedge of the sliding keeper 20 is provided with a notch 24 and a lug 25 forming an extension of one wall of the notch. This notch 24 and lug 25 cooperate for bearing against the free end of the hasp heel 19 for preventing pivotal movement of the hasp. For' the purpose of maintaining the keeper in its hasp holding position, a spiral spring 26 is seated in the recess 10 formed inthe boss 9 and encircles a pin 27 depending. from the bottom edge ofthe keeper 20 for bearing against this said bottom edge ofthe keeper.
Journaledin asmall recess 28 formed inthe rear'wall 1l ofthe easingis ,a journal 2'9"for't`he4 post' 30 which is provided with a reduced square opposite end 31 fitted within a similarly shaped opening in the keeper actuating disk 32 which is positioned torwardly of the sliding keeper 20. This disk has its itront portion journaled within a cuplike bearing 33 having a circular opening 34 formed therein. This bearing cup 33 is received within a circular pocket 35 formed in the inner face of the front wall 13 of the lock casing, which pocket also receives a circular cover or guard plate 36 which is arranged forwardly ot the bearing cup 33. Encircling the post and having its igorward end received within a recess 37 in the keeper actuating disk 32 is a spiral spring 38 which acts to torce'the keeper actuating disk against the bearing cup 33 and the bearing cup against the cover or guard plate 36 which in turn is forced against the inner wall of the pocket for preventing unintentional shi'fting of these elements by the rictional engagement of these members with each other.
The keeper actuating disk 32 is further provided with a laterally projecting pin 39 which overlies the upper edge of the keeper 2O and constantly bears against the same. The front face ot the keeper actuating disk 32 is provided with the openings 40 which are arranged concentrically with the axis of the disk and are located at four equally spaced points.
By inspecting Figs. 1 and 5, it will be seen that the elongated slot 36a formed in the cover or guard plate 36 is of subst-antially equal length to the diameter of the openings 34 and 15 formed in the bearing cup 33 and front wall 13 respectively and that the said slot 36a may be arranged as in Fig. 1 for concealing the openings 40 in the keeper actuating disk 32 or it may be arranged to expose diametrically positioned openings 40.
The key 41 is provided with the longitudinally extending spaced lugs 42 which are spaced the proper distance to span the diametrically opposed openings 40 in the keeper actuating disk 33.
lIhe operation of the padlock embodying this invention may be described as follows z- It will iirst be considered that the hasp 13 is in its closed position with the keeper 2O arranged so that the side wall of the notch 24. and the corresponding wall of the lug 25 bear against the outer end of the hasp heel 19, the said keeper being held in that position by the spiral spring 26. The cover or guard plate 36 should be arranged as in Fig. 1 with the elongated slot 36a out of register with either of the sets ot dianietrically opposed openings 40 formed in the keeper actuating disk 32. To release the hasp 18. the possessor of the key 41 should insert the lugs 42 into the slot 36a orn the cover or guard plate 36 and turn the said cover or guard plate until the slot 36u registers with either of the diametrically opposed sets of openings 40. Then the said lugs 42 of the key 41 may be positioned within the same. By turning the key in a clockwise direction, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5, the keeper actuating disk 32 is caused to rotate in the same direction for moving its laterally inwardly projecting pin 39 in a clockwise direction. rlfhis movement of the pin 39, in view ot its constantly bearingagainst the upper edge ol the sliding keeper 20, will cause the. latter to move downwardly through the lock casing against the pressure ol the spiral spring 26. This movement ot' the sliding keeper 2O will continue until the pin 39 bears against the lug 25 formed on the keeper 2O which engagement will prevent further movement ot' the key and the actuating disk and also will stop the movement of the keeper 20. The keeper, however, has been moved suiliciently to free the heel 19 of the hasp 18 from the notch 24 and lug 25 so that the hasp may be pivoted to its open position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 and in full. lines in Fig. 3. In Fig. 3, the heel 19 of the hasp is shown as bearing against the top plate 16 of the casingwhich engagement will limit the opening movement of the hasp.
It will be noted that the cover or guard plate 36, when positioned to arrange its slot 36a in respect to the sets of diametrically opposed openings 40 of the keeper actuating disk 32, as shown in Fig. 1, will prevent the entrance of foreign matter into these key lug receiving openings 40 and will also confuse a person attempting to open the padlock without the proper authority.
It is to be understood that the form ot this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. In a padlock of the type described, a casing, a hasp pivoted to the casing and having a heel projecting inwardly thereof from its pivot end, a spring pressed slidable keeper engageably associated with the heel of the hasp for holding the hasp in its closed position, a rotatable member for sliding said keeper into its hasp heel releasing position, said rotatable member having a pair of spaced key receiving openings, said casing having a relatively large keyehole registering with both key openings, and a key for actuating said rotatable member.

In a padlock of the type described, a casing, a hasp pivoted to the casing and having'a heel projecting inwardly thereof from its pivot end, a spring pressed slidable keeper engageably associated with the heel of the hasp for holding the hasp in its closed position, a rotatable member 'for Isliding said keeper into its hasp heel releasing position, said rotatable member having a pair of spaced key receiving openings, said casing having a relatively large key hole registering with both key openings a rotatable cover plate having a slot capable ci being arranged in or out of register with the key openings, and a key adapted to be inserted into the slot of the cover plate for arranging the slot in register with the openings in the rotatable member for permitting the key to enter said openings to aetnate said rotatable member.
