'Be it known that I, ANTON LIJEsxI, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thermostatic Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. e
This invention relates to thermostatic valves and is particularly directed to a valve.

Objects of this invention are to provide a 4thermostatic valve which will allow the exit of air from the radiator but will prevent the passage of steam or water therefrom, and to provide a thermostatic valve which is devoid of diaphragms, expansible capsules, or similar members. l 2 Further objects are to rovide a thermostatic valve which is provi ed with a specially formed heated responsive metal member so constructed that it will provide a material amount of elongation for a-relatively small rise in temperature and to associate this member with a valve and float so that the valve will be actuated either by the mem It is to be noted that the base portion is provided with a ange 5 which isexternalthreaded and receives the internally a threaded lower end of the casing 5. It is to be noted that a curved sip on like pipe 8 extends loosely through the fitting 4 o and to the passageway 3 so as to siphon out any water that may appear in the thermostatic valve, such water draining either through the aperture 7 or the pipe 2.
It 1e to be noted that the plpe 2 1s provided with an enlarged portion 9 adjacent its 55 lower end to which the lower portion of a helical member 10 is secured by means of two or more screws 11. This helical member is spaced from the pipe 2 and extends' upwardly within the casing v6. At its upper .end it is provided with a knurled or rounded pprtion 12 which receives a hub 13, such hub ing rigidly secured in place by means of a screw 14. e
It is to -be noted that the helical member 10 is composed of two dissimilar metals so related that the member under the action of heat will materially elongate.
The casing 6 carries a top 14 which is provided with a valve seat 15. A valve 16 coop- 70 crates therewith to control the passage of air outwardly from the-device. This valve is rigldly carried by means of a ioat 17. The loat, it will be noted from the drawings, is provided with a downwardly extending pin 18 which is loosely carried within a central aperture formed in the hub 13.
T'he operation of the apparatus is as fol-v lows z-When air collects wlthin the radiator and lills the casing 6, the heated steam -does 90 not act upon the helical member 10 and consequently such member is contracted. This positions the valve 16 away from the seat 15 and allows the air to escape. When, however, steam fills the casing 6, the helical member expands and the valve closes thus preventing exit of steam. If the steam should condense or `water collect within the valve casing, although the. thermostatic valve may be open, nevertheless water will notpass outwardly from the device, for the oat l 17 will rise'as it is freely movable with respect to the hub 13, and will force the valve 16 into contact with the seat 15. However, water quickly drains from the valve due to the loosely positioned Siphon like pipe 7 and is .discharged into the radiator.
It will be seen that the device does not de---YH pend for its operation upon any gas filled capsule, diaphragm or similar device, but that it is extremely steady and reliable in its operation and obviously will have a long and eilicient life.
It is to be noted particularly that the device is of very simple construction and is relatively .sturd and rugged and is not likely to t out o order.y i
Alt ough the invention has 1 1 described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously vembodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
A thermo/static valve comprising a base portion having an upwardly extending apertured central pipe, said base portion having an aperture extending thereinto and adapted to communicate Vwith a radiator, said base portion having a-duct extending upwardly and communicating with said aperture, a casing extending upwardly from said base portion, a top carriedvby said casing and provided with a valve seat, a helical member composed of two dissimilar metals secured t-o said base portion, and surrounding` said upwardly extending pipe, a hub carried by the upper end of said helical member, a float loosely connected with said hub, and a valve carried by said float and adapted to cooperate with said valve seat.
