Fire-Escapes.
Patented Nov. 24, 1874.
THE sRAPHl coyMoro-uxmasa PINK Pubs my.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BOUOHER DE BOUGHERVILLE, OF QUEBEC, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FlRE-ESCAPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 157,065, dated November 24, 1874 application filed March 25, 1874.
To-all whom it may concern: g Be it known that I, GEORGE. BOUOHER DE BoUonERVILLE, of the city of Quebec, Ganada, have invented a new and simple arrangement of two hooks for attaching a rope or cord for the purpose of getting out of a window, and to be used as a fire-escape, without exposing a person in descending to the danger of striking against the wall or projections of the building; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a side sectional view.
A is a strong hook, about fifteen inches long, fixed on one of the sides of the window. 0 is a light depression on the hook, to prevent the rope from slipping toward the wall when in use. A short hook or hinge-hook, B, or a strong nail or other support, is fixed eight or ten inches above the hook A, on the same side of the window. If it is found more convenient, the hook A may be fixed at the center of the upper frame of the window, as seen at A 5 then outside, eight or ten inches above the window, and vertically above the hook A, is fixed the short hook or support B.
When it is intended to get out of the window, the loop E of the cord or rope D D is passed on the hinge B, and, holding the hook A horizontally outward, one or two turns of the cord D D is made on the end F of the book, so that the upper hanging part of the rope may rest in the depression 0 on the inside, as shown in the drawings, Figs. 1 and 2. Then, standing on the window-sill K, the person intending to descend grasps the fire-escape, or any other attachment properly fixed on'the rope D D, steps out easily, and descends with facility.
Having thus described my invention, its arrangements, and the modeof using it, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
The combination of the hook A, having the bend O, the short hook or support B, the loop E, and cord D D, secured at F on the hook A, in the manner described, so that the cord may hang down and be held at a proper distance from the wall, all as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE BOUCHER DE BOUCHERVILLE.
