INVENTOR LEVVA aiuowcmss ATTYS,
Patented Jan. 19, 1926.
UNITED STATES LEVVA R. HOLYGROSS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
TOY BALLOON.
Application filed June 10, 1922. Serial No. 567,486.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVVA- R. HOLY- cnoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain newand useful Improvement in Toy Balloons, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a toy balloon adapted upon deflation to generate a great variety of amusing tones of different quality and pitch.
The invention is embodied in the example herein set forth, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a combined side view and section showing the balloon inflated and with the horn or squawker in one position.
Fig. 2 is a detail in section illustrating the squawker in a position inverted as respects the position shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a detail in section of the squawker detached.
In the views 5 designates the hollow or usual elastic inflatable member. In the neck of the inflatable member is inserted and secured a tubular stem 6 having a small central bore 7 continued as a larger bore 8 or socket the latter being at the external portion of the stem. Theend of the stem within the balloon is subtended diametrically by a vibrant reed consisting of narrow strip 12 of rubber stretched and secured at its ends to the stem. At its outer end the stem is slightly tapered. The squawker or horn consists of a separate tubular member having a small slightly tapered end 9 adapted to enter the socket 8 of the stem and a larger flared end 10 provided with a slightly tapered socket 11 of larger diameter than the bore of the smaller end adapted to receive the externally tapered end 9 of the stem. The stem and squawker are preferably turned out of wood.
By inserting the tapered or smaller end of the squawker in the socket of the stem to varying extents a variety of tones may upon deflation of the balloon be produced and by inverting the squawker and applying the enlarged socket over the tapered end of the stem still other varieties of tone may be obtained. The stem itself also yields a sound of its own without the application of the squawker. By giving a slow sliding motion to the squawker when applying either end to and separating it from the stem a rising or falling pitch of tone may be had. Many other interesting and amusing tone effects may be produced by the manipulation of the squawker. The variations in the character of borings of the squawker has some effect in fixing the quality or character of the tone in either application.
The forms of the parts can be changed without departing from the invention as claimed.
That I claim is:
1. A toy balloon comprising, in combination, an inflatable member provided with a stem having a sound producing vibrant member and a socket, and a horn having a tapered end adapted to be movably applied to and longitudinally shifted in said socket for varying the sound emitted.
2. A toy balloon comprising, in combination, an inflatable member provided with a stem having a sound producing vibrant member and a socketed and tapered end,
and a horn having one tapered and one.
socketed end adapted to be applied respec tively to the socketed and tapered end of the stem.
3. A toy balloon comprising, in combination, an inflatable member with a tubular stem having a sound producing vibrant member, and a separate tubular member having a bore at each end, the bore at one end being different in diameter from that at the other, said separate tubular member adapted to be fitted first at one end and then at the other to said stem to form dissimilar air passages and thereby vary the sound emitted upon deflation of the balloon.
4.. A toy balloon comprising, in combination, an inflatable member provided with a tubular stem having a sound producing vibrant member, and a separate tubular member having bores different of diameter at its opposite ends, said separate tubular member adapted to be applied at one end to said stem internally and at the other end externally to said stem to vary the sound emitted upon deflation of the balloon.
