Description

Jan. 19 1926."
. G- W. MULLER RAILWAY RAIL AND TIE SECURING DEVICE Original Filed July 9," 1925 Be it known that I, GEORGE V V citizen of, the United 'States,'; res1d1ng {at Patented Jan. 19, 1 926.
fP' E-NT'Q E- GEORGE MULLER-{or WASHI TON, msr nrcr oncotuivrrarafi i RA LWAY RAIL Y'ANVD TIE SECURING DEVICE:
Application; filed my 9, 1925, serial N0..l2,542; team ect b 5 y To all whom'z't may concern:
Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Hallway Rail and;Tie Securing Devices,
of which the following. is .'a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 7 in railway trackage, and has for oneyof its objects to improve and strengthen the rail supports, to enable them "to ,withstand the increased weight of the present; day ,locomotives and other rollingsto'ck.
fith t i d other. Objects l invention consists in certain novel 7, features ofconstruction as hereinaftershown and de-l scribed and then specificallypointed out; in the claims,,fand in' the drawings illustrative 2+2 of Figure 1.
Figure a plan view ofrthe parts shown in Figure 1.
Figures & and 5' are detached perspective views from above and from beneath of one of the tie bridging plates.
Figure 6 18 an enlarged sectionalldetail, illustrating the construction of the lower clamp device. f I j Figure 7 is a detached perspective view of one of the lower bridging plates.
The improved construction 1 includes 'ties arranged in pairs, side by side, portions of two pairs of the, ties: being indicated atlO... v V
-te'nding over the ties, supporting rail ele For the purpose of illustration, one of the load bearing rails is represented as a whole at 11, but as the construction of the rail is the subject-matter ofanother application it is not further describedin this application. p r
Located beneath the ties 10 is a supporting member or rail'12 of any suitable form, for
instance, of old worn out or discarded rail-'1 way rails, as shown.
Bearing upon each pair ofthe ties 10 adjacent each of the load bearing rails 11,
is a bridging plate 13, each plate having a spur 14 at the end to be driven into the tie.
One face of each spur is directed at right angles to the lower face of the plate 13,
while the other face is directed at-an acute anglethereto as shown in'Figures 4: and 5,
n view the a side elevation ofa portion 7 so that'wheneforced into the tie, the right rails.
16- adapted to extend between the ties 10,
t re -K v Each of the bosses 1 1 nd 12. V
serrated as shown at 2 1 inFigu'reb.
* A 'tie bolt. 18 extends throu'ghthe apertures of the, bosses .15 and between theties 10, andisprovided with a head 19' ate-one end bearingagainst one of the bosses 15"of as 1 shown, to constitute a spacing element 5 faces of the bridginglplates which Iengage beneath ,the ti esil0 are preferably Eachfof the p1ates18isalso formed with 1 areinforcing. ap'erturedboss'lS, and a stop v is :also forined with a lip element 17 to extend over the ad 7 jacent portions of the tie flanges of the rails 7' one of the bri'dging. plates, and a nut 20 v at the other: end and bearing against the boss15 of the other bridging plate. Each pair of theties 10isspa'ced a distance corresponding to one of the bolts 18' and spacer members 16.
By thisconstructlon a very firm and rigid coupling is provided between the ties and rails and withoutthe necessity for making relatively large openingsor apertures in the ties; the onl y'apertures being those made by therelatively small spurs which are negligible. l H l/Vhat is; claimed and desired to secured by-Letters-Patent isz- '1. In railway: trackage, sideby side, load bearing rail elements exmentsextending beneath the ties, bridging plates upon and beneath theties and having lip devices projecting over the railsand' spurs penetrating the ties, and clamp bolts connecting the plates and extending between ties arranged trackage, ties arranged I or from creeping movement away from the ranged as a cooperative unit to support rails, a bridging plate having rail holding means, and clamping means arranged eX- teriorly of and extending between the ties from top to bottom thereof and operative to unite the plate and ties.
4. In railway trackage, a pair of ties arranged as a cooperative unit tosuppo'rt rails, a bridging plate having rail holding means, and clamping means extending between the ties and including rail holding means bearing upon the under faces of the same.
5. In railway trackage, a pair of ties arranged as a cooperative unit to support rails, a bridging plate adapted to be carried by said ties having rail holding means, clamping means arranged exteriorly of and extending between said ties from top to bottom thereof and bearing upon the bottom faeesof said ties and operative to unite the plate and ties.
6. In railway trackage, a pair of ties arranged as a cooperative unit to support rails, a bridging plate having rail holding means, tie penetrating means carried by 7 said plate, and clamping means arranged exteriorly of and extending between the ties from top to bottom thereof and operative to unitethe plate and ties.
7. In railway traekage, a pair-of ties arranged as a cooperative unit to support rails, a bridging plate extending over the top surface of said ties with rail holding means, tie penetrating means carried by said plate, a bridging plate'e'xtendi'ng'over the bottom surface of said ties with rail I holding means, tie penetrating means car- '-ranged' as a cooperative unit, means for supporting said unit, bridging plates having means for holdlng "said unit supporting nreans,'-ra1'ls supported by saidunit, bridging plates having rail'holdi'ng means,= and clamping means operative to unite said plates and ties.
10. A bridging plate for the purpose described formed with a boss intermediate the ends, and having rail holding lips extendlng laterallyand vertically from the thickened portion thereof.
11. A bridging plate for the purpose described formed with a boss intermediate the ends with a bolt aperture through the thickened portion thereof, and rail holding lips extending laterally and vertically from the thickened portion of same.
12. A bridging plate for the purpose described, tie penetrating means depending from said plate,-and'-rail holding lips extending laterally and vertically from said plate. 7
A bridging plate for the purpose described with a bolt-aperture thereth-rough, tie penetrating means depending from said plate, and rail holding lips extending-laterally and vertically from said plate.-
14 A bridging plate for the purpose deseribedhaving a'bolt'aperture, rail holding means, and tie penetrating means arranged substantially in alignment on the front portion thereof.
15; A bridging late for the purpose de scribed having a olt aperture,'r'ail holding means, and tie penetrating means arranged substantially inlongitudinal alignment on the front portion thereof.
