Description
l. N. SMITH@ Bale-Ties.
Patented Nov. 17,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
J. NOTTINGHAM SMITH, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,032, dated November 17,1874; application tiled July 2e, 1814.
VState of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Bands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
making a part of this specication.
My invention has for its object to provide a band for baling which shall require no independent buckle or tying device, but be capable of self-fastening; and to this end my invention consists of a bale-band formed of approximately a suitable length, and having the ends thereof so fashioned that they may be in terlocked and fastened, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable those skilled to fully understand my invention, I will proceed to describe the same, referring by letters to the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure l represents a perspective view of a band with its ends adapted to be interlocked and fastened; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of a band with the ends interlocked and fastened; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken at the line a: a' of FigQZ.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the several iigures.
A is a band of suitable sheet metal, rolled to approximately the proper length. One end, B, is left in the usual way, while the other is formed with two wings, O C, and a projection, D. The end B is bent over at the dotted line a a to form a loop, and the projection D is bent over on the line b b in the same direction,
forming a loop corresponding in shape and length to the loop formed on the end B.
The band being around the bale while un der pressure, the looped ends are passed laterally one within the other, when the wings C C are bent over by any suitable instrument, as indicated by dotted lines d d, so as to confine the looped ends securely together, and thus prevent them from pulling apart by the expansive force of the bale.
The bale-band may have the loop at the Winged end formed either before or after the band is placed around the bale. After the band is placed around the bale, if found to be too long, the end B may be eut off at any required distance, and bent over, as described, to form the loop.
I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction or design shown, as it may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention, the gist of which rests in the idea of having the band and tie formed in one and the same piece.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bale-band A, provided with solid interlocking ends B D and confining-Wings C C, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of July, 1874.
J. NOTTINGHAM SMITH. [L. s]
In presence of- W. MEURHEID, W. L. RoWE.
