of the invention, such as will enable others.
skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates'to the construction of lamp shades, and particularly to the application of the covering to the frame of the lamp shade, the primary purpose of my invention being to provide a lamp shade covplied to the frame; is highly decorative an effective, and can vbe easily substituted by a new covering when the old covering is discolored or injured, or when a shade of different appearance or decorative effect is desired.
To this end my invention consists primarily of a lamp shade covering of stiff material pleated lengthwise and formed with circumferential series of notches preferably near the upper or lower ends of alternative pleats;
of a lamp shade frame having circumferential wires or members corresponding to and to enter said circumferential series of notches in the covering, and of a detachable band to surround the pleated covering, and preferably passing through a circumferential series of apertures in the pleats thereof so as tobind the covering securely to the frame.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I shall first describe in detail the mode in which I at present prefer to carry the invention into effect and then point out its various novel features in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this applica; tion in which like parts are designated by the same numbers in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side partly sectional view of a lamp shade embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a broken plan view of the same.
Figures 3 and 4 are detail views of parts hereinafter referred to. V k
, In the drawings, 10 designates the frame of the lamp shade which in this instance is of hexagonal conical form, but which may betas well of square cylindrical, spherical, hemi-spherical or other appropriate form. I prefer to make theframe 10 with upper and lower circumferential constituent wires or members 11 and 12 respectively, braced and supported on the lamp bearing 13, as shown or in any other suitable way.
' The lamp shade covering 14,-, I prefer to make partly or wholly of a strip of stiff textile or other fabric or material, such as parchment paper, which is pleated transversely of the strip, that is lengthwise or up and down the shade and is formed near the 15 cut in the inner folds of alternate pleats.
ceive the upper circumferential member 11 of the frame 10, so that the covering will be held'on the frame by said engagement of the member 11 with the notches 15. It is evident that if desired lower notches may be formed in the pleats to engage also the lower member 12 of the frame.
Securely to bind to the frame the pleated covering thus held thereon, I prefer to form in the pleats below the notches 15 a series of circumferential holes 17 extending through the pleats, and to pass through said holes 17 a cord, ribbon or other suitable band 18, which when drawn tight will securely but removably bind and secure the covering to the frame The pleated shade covering 14, besides serving to engage and bind the frame as described, will contractand expand at either or both ends t I fit frames of different sizes and shapes, and makes an extremely decorative, as well as simple, economical,
'andeasily replaceable and interchangeable lamp shade covering.
varied without departing from the boundaries of the invention as defined by thefollowing claims.
I clalm as my inventlon.
1.A lamp shade consisting of a frame having a circumferential upper member and a covering formed with stifi pleats having a series of circumferential notches engaging the upper member of the frame.
2. A lamp shade consisting of a frame having a circumferential member, a pleated 5 covering to surround the frame having notches in the folds of the pleats engaging the circumferential member of the frame,
the covering to the frame In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
