Be it known that I, JorN O. BECVAR, a citizen of the United States, iand a resident of Brookfield,fcounty`of Cook, and'State of Illinois, have invented certainfnew and useful Improvements in Sash "Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sash fasteners and has for an"object to provide an improved device for fastening the sashes of a window together so as to prevent openingthereof either from theirclosed position for when opened'` to any desired extent. Anotherobjectis to provide means which will permit closing the windows but `which willautooperate to prevent 'opening thereof.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The `invention consists vin the combinations and Varrangements hereinafter described and claimed.

My improved sash fastener comprises a suitable bracket 10 adapted to be astened to one of the window sashes 11, and is preferably arranged to be secured to the top of one of the Stiles 12 of the lower window sash, near the adjoining stile 13 of the upper sash, as shown, and preferably by the use of a lug 14 extending downwardly from the bracket, and openings 15 provided in said lug and in the bottom of the bracket for "reeeiviag screws `10 winch extend thief-gh the openings intothe Lstll'e. shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Means is provided for conveniently releasing the locking pin 25, in order to per mit spring 21 to move the eccentric into locking engagement with the adjacent sash, as shows in full lines in Fig. 2. This means preferably includes a hammer or member 29 which is mounted with a pin 30 upon an outwardly curled lip 31 on bracket 10, and a finger 32 is provided on said hammer to prevent excessive release movement of the hammer. A knob 33 on the inner side of the hammer engages the outer end of pin 25 to press it inwardly for releasing the portion 28 on the bracket to permit operative movement of the eccentric, and a thumb plate 34 is provided on the hammer for conveniently depressing the same. A finger lug 35 may also be provided at the outer end of eccentric 17 for conveniently returning the eccentric to its inoperative position.
In the modified form shown in Fi s. 5 tov 9 inclusive the essential elements o the construction are the same as in the preceding form disclosed in Figs. l to 4 inclusive, but the bracket l0 is provided with a slanting or inclined bottom portion l0 to be adapted for mounting on the Slanting upper face of a style 12', instead of on the horizontal upper face of a style 12 as shown in the preceding form. In this modied form the elements have been indicated by the same numbers as in the preceding forin and with the addition of the prime mark, and the individual enumeration of the elements is therefore deemed. unnecessary.
In use the latch is mounted on the top of one ott' the stiles, but preferably on both stiles, of the lower sash, and when the locking pin 25 is released by depressing hammer 29, the eccentric is automatically pressed against the adjoining stile of the upper sash, by spring Q1. These sashes are then locked against any further overlapping or opening ot the window, but will at the same time permit closing of the window, and the sashes may thus be fastened together when opened to any desired extent, and will also be automatically locked in the closed position.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eilect, this is capable ot' variation and modification Without depart ing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sash fastener comprising a bracket member arranged for mounting it on the stile of one Window sash, an eccentric case pivoted in said bracket and having a frictional covering strip thereon for engaging the adjoining stile of the other sash, lugs struck up from said eccentric and bent over to hold said strip in position, resilient means to press said eccentric into engagement with said other stile, and means on said eccentric to engage said bracket and hold the eccentric in its inoperative position.
2. A sash fastener (.:oniprising a lnacket with means for mounting it on the top of a stile of the lower window sash, an eccentric casing mounted with a pivot member in said bracket and provided with a friction surface adapted to swing outwardly into en gage/ment with the adjoining stile of the upper Window sash, a pin slidablj,T mounted in said eccentric, spring means in said casing on said pin to slide it into engagement with said bracket and hold the eccentric in its inoperative position, a spring in said casing coiled on said pivot member and having one end fastened thereon and the other end fastened on means on said slidable pin for autonnitically moving and holding said eccentric in enggagement with said adjoining stile, and linger engaged. means bent' up from said eccentric for conveniently returning it to its inoperative position.
