PET-GOCKOIERATING DEVICE.

To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, lkROI-IIE Mrnns, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Sacramento, county of Sacramento, State of California have invented certain ne Y and useful Improvements in Pet-Cock-Operating Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
i The invention relates to attaclnnents for Ford automobiles and particularly to a means for operating the oil-test pet-cocks which are mounted on the crank case, and by means of which the level of the oil in said crankcase is gaged by the operator.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a device for the purpose adapted to be permanently mounted on the car which will enable said pet-cocks to be more easily and conveniently operated than is possible with the ordinary equipment.
Another object is to provide a device of this character so arranged that after the cocks have been opened by the operator they will be automatically closed without any attention on his part being necessary. I thus provide a safe-guard against the petcocks being left open, which of course would, if unnoticed, soon cause a draining r of the oil from the crank case.
A further object is to construct the device in such a manner that it may be easily installed in position without making any changes on the car, and While handy to operate, will be concealed from normal view at all times.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device so constructed that with a single handle member both pet cocks may be opened, but the upper one will always be opened first a sufiicient distance to cause the oil, if any, to drip from said cock before the lower one is opened, the opening of the lower cock being optional and not being done if a test of the upper cock shows plenty of oil in the crank case.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly eflective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of Figs. 2 and 3 are front views of the device. looking sideways of the car to whlch the device is attached showing the operating handle in its closed and opened positions, respectively.

Referring now more particularly to the. characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the crank case of a Ford engine having in the usual location upper and lower pet- cocks 2 and 3. are turned for my purpose, if not already in such position, so that their handles l project toward the adjacent side of the car. These handles in the type of pet cock used on Ford cars are flat members which, when closed and with the cocks turned to the above stated position, are disposed in vertical planes. A quarter turn from this posi' tion opens the cooks to their fullest extent.
My operating device includes a rod 5 disposed transversely of the car and projecting from under the mud-guard or fender 6 of the car toward the upper cock 2. 011 the inner end of the rod is fixed a U-shaped clamp member 7 between the sides of which the handle t of the cock is adapted to project, a screw Spassing through the clamp beyond said handle to pinch the sides of the clamp into frictional engagement with the handle. The inner end of one of the clamp sides has inwardly projecting and spaced ears 9 between which the stem of the handle 4 passes so that the latter may be definitely alined with respect to the clamp.
The outer end of the rod 5 is bent in a plane at right angles to said rod to form a suitable operating handle 10, the outer end of which is adapted to abut against the under side of the fender 6 when the cock is closed.
The handle 10 has asuitable curvature in a vertical plane between its outer and its These cocks connection with the rod proper so that a loop is provided clear of the tender to enable the handle to be easily grasped, as shown in Fig. 2.
The rod adjacent the handle 10 is supported by and journaled in a sleeve 11 formed at one end of a rigid strip '12 which is curved to substantiall conform to the contour o t the tender (3. This strip extends rearwardlv to a termination under the run ning board 13 ot the car. The inner bolt it which secures the membe s (3 and 33 to gether is also used to secure the strip 12 thereto. The latter has a hole through which the bolt passes. the nut in ol said i bolt being lirst removed to allow the bolt to pass through the strip.
Just inwardh, ot the sleeve ii the rod 5 has a downwardly projecting arm it; to which, one end a tension spring: 1? connected. The other end of the spring has an eye adapted to pass over the bolt 1- after the strip 12 is in position. The nut 15 is then replaced and tigl'itened up. thus binding the parts 6, 123. it and the eve of the spring 17 firmly together.
It will thus be seen that it the handle 10 is pulled around toward the front end of the car the cock 2 will be opened. and the tension on the spring 1'? will be increased. As soon as the operator lets go ol the handle the spring will act to turn the rod in the opposite direction, thus closing the cock. Although the spring is still in tension the rod will not be turned beyond said cock closing position on account of the fact that the outer end of the handle 10 will then abut against the tender (3 as shown in Fig. 2, thus of course preventing further n'iovement of the rod I have also provided a connection between the rod 5 and the lower cool: 3 so that the latter will be opened in common with the upper cool 2.
This connection comprises a rod 18 similar to but shorter than the rod 5, and having on its inner end a clamp 19 similar to the clamp 7 and adapted for connect ion to the handle at of the lower pet-cock. On said other rod adjacent its outer end is rigidly fixed a. plate 20 through which the rod 5 slidably passes. The rod 5 outwardly of the plate 20 has Fixed thereon a rigid pla'e A through which the rod in slidabl passes, as shown in Fig. 4:, the plates 20 and 21 being substantially parallel to each other. This forms a substantially rigid connert'ion between the two rods so that one must turn with other. At the. same time the slidability ol the two rods relative to each other permits ol inde 'iendent connection of the rods to their respective pet-cork. hai'idles and takes care ol any slight discrepaney which may exist in the leiurth ol' the rods relative to the position ol. the petcocks.
From the 'l'oregi'iing' description it will be r adilv seen that l have produced such a device as subt'dantiallv fulfills the obje ts oi the invention as setforth herein.
