CONCRETE FORM.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD ELWIN blows, a citizen of the United States, residing at Claremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Concrete Forms. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to concrete forms.
It has for its object to provide an improved concrete form and more particularly an improved removable concrete form. A further obj ect of my invention is to provide an improved collapsible concrete form especially adapted to use as an inside form for chimneys or the like. A still further object of my invention is to providean improved concrete form of improved, rugged and exceedingly simple construction, which comprises a small number of parts and which may be set up with facility in any desired length and removed with facility after the concretelms set, the construction at the same time being capable of being manufactured at small expense and withstanding the rough usage in service to which these devices are ordinarily subjected. These and other objects and advantages of my improved construction will however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, the same therein being illustrated as applied to an inside form for a concrete chimney although it will be understood that the invention may be applied to other uses.

Inasmuch as the same mechanisms 'for expanding and contracting the form may be utilized tln'oughout the length of the'iorm with either one set of mechanisms or a plurality of the same being used, depending upon the length of the opening to be provided, a description of one of these mechanisms will sutiice for all. Accordingly reference is made more particularly to Fig. 3. In this figure it will be noted that the outer surface of the form comprises a plurality of usual metal sheets, herein tour, 1, 2, 3, 4-, disposed on end and herein in the form of a rectangle with rounded corners, the sheets 1 and 3 herein being duplicates and the sheets 2 and 4 being duplicates, while each sheet is provided with a raised portion 5 adapted to overlap its neighbor in overlapping telescopic fashion as shown.
Inasmuch as the connections for each of the sheets 1 and 3 are identical and the connections for the sheets 2 and 4 are like wise identical, a description of these connections for the sheets 1 and 2 will sufice for both sets. itei e ring to sheet 1, it will be noted that, like the sheet l. (Fig. 2), it is suitably attached as by rivets 6 to a cross rib 7 of substantially L-shape having a rounded corner and provided in its ends with an in ternal T-shaped slot 8 which is adapted to receive the adjacent end of a rib 9 likewise otE L-shape but of T-shape cross section at its ends, to which rib the plate 2 is attached as by screws 10, the construction being such that the members may be moved in and out of one another to expand or collapse the form. More particularly, it will be noted that the member 7 is connected as by suitable screws 11 to a suitable transversely disposed corner or stay block 12, the screws 11 herein extending through the back wall of the T-shaped slot as illustrateed in Fig. 3, while the member 9 is similarly connected as b screws 13 to a similar corner or stay bloc: lt, the screws in this instance, however, extending entirely through the member 9.
Moreover, it will be noted that the two stay blocks 12 and 1 1 are spaced from one another and that each of the same has formed therein at a point adjacent its inner edge a T-shaped slot 15 in which exterd correspondingly formed Trshaped Wedges on opposite sides. of a relatively perpendicularly disposed wedge member 16, herein or" Lbeam cross section (see Fig. 3), which is capable of being moved in or out relative to the blocks to force the same apart or contract the same, the surfaces of the T-shapet slots in the blocks for this purpose being inclined similarly to the wedge as shown in Fig. 2. In the form of the invention illustrated, the wedge is is also carried on a longitudmall estenoing member 1?, herein in the form of an angle iron, suitably attached longitudinally and centrally ot the wedge member, as by rivets 18.
Here attention is also directed to the fact that the stay blocks 12 and 1d of the sheet sections 3, t are similarly connected by a wedge 16 and that similar wedge mechanisms 19 extend between the blocks 12 and 1st of the sheet- sections 1 and 4 and 2 and 3, these wedges moreover being connected to upstanding members similar to the members 17 previously described. Moreover attention isdirected to the fact that the members 17 and 20 extend longitudinally through the form carrying as many wedges 16, 19 in sets at different points and cooperating with dilterent sets of stay blocks and transverse rib members as may be necessary to give the desired rigidity to a torm oi the desired length, and that the member-s17, 2O likewise extend beyond the end of the sheet metal forms in such n'iamier as to enable them to be moved longitudinally from the end, as for example, from the top of a chimney, in such manner as to enable them to be operated as desired to expand or nuse contraction of the form from that point.
in the use of my improved construction it will be evident that a form may be provided of any desired length depending upon the requirement ot the particular work being done, and that one or more sets of transverse members, stay blocks and wedge mechanisms may be operated from an end of the form by moving the wedges 16 and 19 in such manner as to expand or contract the form. In a preferred operation, the two wedges 16 or the ditl'erent sets of wedges 16 are preferably forced inward simultaneously while the two wedges 19 or the different sets of wedges 19 are also preferably operated simultaneously. As a result, it will be evident that the action oi. each individual wedge will be such as to "force the adjacent blocks 12, 1 1 apart and thereay expand the form as desired, while the term due to the locking action of the wedge surfaces, will be maintained in any given expanded position depending upon the extent to which the wedges have been driven in. When, on the contrary, it is desired to remove the form, i. e. after the concrete has set. this may similarly be accomplished by simply reversely operating the wedges, the wedges 16 then preferably being pulled out simultaneously, while the wedges 19 are also preferably simultaneously pulled out. As a result of pulling out the wedges, it will here also be noted that due to the cooperating wedge surfaces, herein in the form of the shaped slot connection, the blocks 12, 1 1- of each set will be drawn together in such manner as to contract. the form in the desired fashion and thereby enable the same to be removed longitudinally from the opening. In this connection attention is also directed to the fact that by reason of the "i -shaped wedge connections and the location of the members 17. 20 relative to the wedges 16, 19, it is impossible for the wedges to be withdrawn longitudinally from any set oii' blocks 12, let, the blocks instead being limited in their contracting movement relative to the wedges by contact of their inner edges with the adjacent sides of the members 17, 20 so that as those members are withdrawn they must automatically carry with them all oi their cooperating mechanism including the blocks, the transverse connections 7, 9 and the form sheets 1, 2, 3, 1.
Asa result of my improvement, it will be observed that an exceedingly rugged construction is provided, the transverse members and the stay blocks cooperating with the wedge mechanism to produce a very rigid and strong construction requiring a small number of wedge mechanisms for a given length, although obviously the wedge mechanisms may be rei'ieated as often as may be necessary to give the desired strength to the form throughout its length. Moreover, by reason of tee wedge mechanism provided, not only is such a rugged and rigid construction produced, but a construction is pro vided in which the parts may be extended positively and quickly and to the desired degree by the average workman, it only being necessary tor the wedges to be (h 'ven in to given points indicated on the members 17, 20 to er: rand the form to various desired degrees, while, likewise due to the character 0t these means, it is tound possible to with draw the wedges and thereby collapse the form, quickly and positively by any manual or power means ordinarily available on a construction job. Here attention is also directed to the fact that by reason of the small number and simplicity of parts and the duplication of many parts, the cost of manufacture of my improved form is very low. These and other objects and advantages of my improved construction will, however, be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While I have in this application specifically described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be miderstood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may no modified and embodied in various other forms without departing sin from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
