Devices ofithis charaotenare ccnninonl-y. formed partly from metal and partiy of heat insulating material, and rivets are used for attaching the holder to the mp, the rivets being in contact with the metal. and exposed at the inner side of the cap, so that there is danger of conducting ciectricity to the miners head if he should accidentally knock the lamp or the lamp holder against the usual overhead trolley wire. It is one object of the invention to provide a new and improved lamp holder which is free of this objection.

Another object is to provide a holder for the ordinary'carbide lamp, Which is so engaged b v the snspending hook of the lamp, as to hold the latter in fixed angular relation with the cap, regardless of the direction in which the miner may move his head.

Yet another aim is to provide a device of the class described which is of extreme simplicity, vet is efficient and very desirable.

ll'ith the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinefter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.

In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a vertically disposed piece of leather or other desired heat insulating material, said leather piece having its upper end 2 directed rearwardly and formed with an opening 3. A sheet metal plate is bent between its ends on a transverse line 4 to provide upper and lower plate-like portions '5 and 6 Which are disposed at the upper and lower sides of the end portion 2 of the leather piece 1, said plate-like portions 5 and 6 both terminating in vertical parts 7 which are Secured by rivets-'8%againstftheAvertical portion of the piece/of leather? Moreover, this portion 5 preferably slants toward the opening 11 in a number of directions, as shown, thus further facilitating insertion of the hook. Reception of a portion of the hook in the slot 10, holds the lamp 15 against horizontal pivotal movement, and reception of said hook in the vertically alined openings 11 and 13, prevents the lamp from Swinging forwardly, when the miner tilts his head downwardly.

Near the rear end of the plate-like portions 5 and 6, rivets 17 are preferably passed through the former and the portion 2 of the leather piece 1, and additional rivets 18 by preference pass through said rear ends of the portions 5 and G and through the intervening portion 2 of the leather, so as to rigidly hold the several parts together. The rear ends of the portions 5 and 6 are reduced in width by notching them as indicated at 19, so as to expose the rear corners of the leather, and through these exposed rear corners and the crown of the cap, rivets 20 are passed, and other rivets 21 pass through the lower corners of the leather piece and through the cap. The rivets 20 are entirely out of contact with metal and even should they be against the miners head, they cannot conduct electricity thereto, should he accidentally strike the lamp or the plate portion 5 of the device against an overhead trolley wire.

The device is exceptionally simple and ining expensive, v yet is a distinetly improved article which maybe easily and cheaply manufactured and marketed, and will be highly efficient and in every Way desirable.

Excellent results are obtainable from the' exact details disclosed, and they are therefore preferably followed. However, within the scope of the inventon as claimed, slightmodifications may be made.

I claim:

l. A minerls lamp support comprising a verticalpiece of non-metallic heat insulat- .material having a rearwardly directed upper, end formed with a vertical opening, a sheet metal plate bent substantially upon itself between its ends to provide upper and lower plate-like portions .which contact with the upper and lower sides of said rearwardly directed end of the heat insulating material, the free ends of said plate-like portions be- -ing vertically dis osed and Secured against the front and rear sides of the insulating 'T member below the bend of the latter, the intermediate part of the upper plate-like pormaterial 'and Lion being forwardly offset .from .the heatinsulatingf'material and formed With a vertical slot and with an opening alined With the first named opening, the intermediate partl of'the lower plate-like portion being downwardly oft'set from the heat insulating being formed with an opening alined with the aforesad openings, the three openings in the slot being adapted to jointly receive the hook of a'carbide lamp, said openings being each of annular-Walled form to hold. thev hook against lateral movement. i

2. A structure as specified in claim 1; the roar ends of said upper'and lower plate-like portions being reduced in width to expose corner portons of the piece of nsulating material, whereby such corner lportions may receive attaching rivets and :may serve to insulate such rivets from the metallic parts of the device.
