Description

Jan. H. J. S. CROSS BRUSH Filed Jan. 15, 1925 9 v H EI 9 Patented Jan. 12, 1926.
HENRY JAMES s'rEwAn'r cnoss,
BRUSH. 7
Application filed January 15 1925. Serial No 2,627.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 'I, HENRY JAMES STEWART (JRoss, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residingin the city ofToronto, county of York, rovince of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of whlch the following is a specificatlon.
My invention relates to improvements in brushes and relates more particularly to brushes used in polishing hardwood floors, and the object of the invention'is to provide a cheaply made yet efiicient brush for "the purpose set forth whereby the uneven surfaces of a floor can be as readily polished as the even surfaces. and in the following specification I shall illustrate and descrlbe. my invention, and what I clalm as new w1ll be set forth in the claims forming part; of this specification.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my brush. Fig. 2- is a vertical cross section on the line 2 -2, Fig. 1, and Figs. 3 and 4 are longitudlnal vertical sections on the lines 3-3, and 4-4, respectively, Fig. 1. y
In the drawings, like characters of reference refer to thesameparts.
It is very necessary to provide a brush, flexible in character which will polish the uneven as well as the even surfaces of a floor, and in order to produce a commercial article for the purpose set 'forth,-it is abso be passed over a portion of the floor which i is below the general surface thereof, it will move down thus keeping its bristles in contact with the depressed or lower. portion of the floor surface and thus eifectpolishing of same. This position of the brush 6 is shown clearl in Fig. 4.
In order to old the brush 6 in co-opera- -tive relationship in respect of the brushes 2 and 3, the plates 4 are provided with upper and lower flanges 7.- .Each end of the brush 6 is cutaway so as to provide shoul- TENT! if t j or 'ronoirro, v oiv'rnnro, CANADA- ders 8, and each of these shouldersis shallower than the spaceseparating the flanges 7 consequently room is allowed for the ver tlcal movement-of the brush 6.
The lowermost flanges 7 of course limit the downward movement of the brush 6 and also prevent this brush from dropping out of place between the brushes 2 and 3 when the article is lifted from off the floor.
Each brush is weighted after anysuitabl e' manner to provide for the necessary pressure, and 1t Wlll be obvious that this weightmg of the brushes may be carried out in" various ways without departing from the I preferhowever to attach to the top of spirit of my invention.
each brush 2 and 3 a metal bar 9 co-eXtensive 1n length and width with each brush. Also attached to the top side of the brush 6 1s a metal plate or bar 10. This plate or bar 10 has sufficient clearance with the top flanges 7 and the inner sides of the brushes 2 and 3 to allow for free action of the brush 6: and it will be also understood that the 1,
brush 6 has sufiicient clearance at each end with the plates 4, and at each side with the brushes 2 and 3 to allow for its freeaction.
Lugs or ears 11 are carried'by the plates or bars 9 so as to permit any suitable handle (not shown) to be associated with the article. lutely essential that this article be cheap to This article is eflicient in action, and the construction disclosed permits of the replacement of any worn portion.
Although the flanges 7 are shown as overlapping the ends of the- brushes 2 and 3, at their top and bottom sides, still these flanges need notnecessarily extend beyond the width of the brush 6, because their function is to limit the vertical movement of the brush 6.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A polishing device comprising two weighted brushes laterally spaced apart; a
movable weighted brush located in the space between said first-mentioned brushes, means a holding :said first-mentioned brushes, in fixed spaced relationship and bridging the space therebetween at each endthereof, and means carried by said holding means and co-acting with the ends .of said movable brush to permit of the free limited vertical movement thereof, for the purpose specified.
2. A polishing device comprising two Weighted brushes laterally spaced apart; a plate attached to each end of each of the said brushes to couple them together, said 5 plate being provided with top and bottom flanges which project into the space between said brushes; a Weighted movable brush 10-
