UNITED srArE-s IRVING- R. LEDERER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUCKLE.
Application filed Iv'larch 4, 1924. Serial No. 698,877.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, InviNc R. Lnnnnnn,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of -Providei1ce and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following 1s a specification.
tion is to provide a cross bar which is readily removable from the arms or'frame of a buckle orbail member whereby the bar may be inserted into a loop formed on an end of the strap to facilitate the attaching of the strap thereto or the removal of the .strap when worn to be replaced by a fresh one.
A further object of this invention is a provision of a finger-piece whereby the cross bar may be readily removed by manual manipulation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the backof a watch with a strap connected thereto and provided with a buckle for adjustably connecting the ends together, the bail of the watch and the buckle being of my improved construction.
Figure 2 is a plan view of my improved buckle.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation showing my improved cross bar.
Figures 4,- 5, 6, and 7 are details showing the different parts of my cross-bar construction.
namental pendant hung from a strap or the like.
It is'found in practice of advantage to provide a buckle or bail member having a removable cross-bar adapted to be inserted through the loop in the end ofa strap or band for removably securing the end of the band to the bail of a watch or to a buckle member whereby a loop or eye may be formed in the end of the band at the factory ready to be attached without sewing or otherwise fasteningthe folded-back portion of the strap after applying the same to a watch bail or'buckle; and the following is a detailed description of one construction in which the cross-bar member may be readily removed.
Vith reference to the drawings, 10 and 11 designate portions of a strap or band for a wrist watch bracelet, which may be adjustably connected to the arm of the wearer by suitable means. One end of each of these portions is connected to each of the bails l2 and 13 of a wrist watch while the opposite end of the member 10 is attached to a buckle 14 which receives the free end of the strap portion 11'.
I have constructed my buckle or bail memi ber with arms 15 having bearings 16 in I theirend portions to rotatably mount a cross bar 17 upon which may be mounted a tongue 18 for insertion into'openings 19 in a portion of the strap for adjustable connection thereto.
My cross bar 17 comprises a tubular shell 20 in which is mounted a spindle 21 by means of a bearing 22 at one end and the abutment formed by the rolled-in edges28 at the other end. Upon this spindle is mounted an abutment 24 which is held thereon by means of a pin 25, which abutment is normally held in contact with the bearing member 22 by means of a coiled spring 26 acting between the abutment and the abutment 24.
On one end of this spindle, I provide an extension or finger-piece 27 which protrudes a short distance outwardly beyond. the end of one of the bearings 16 of the arm so that the spindle may be grasped by the thumb and finger to readily receive an end-- wise movement for withdrawing the cr as bar from its bearings, which I accomplish by sliding the spindle lengthwise from its bearing and swingingthe cross-bar at a slight angle to the plane of thearms, which 7 is permitted by the loose fit of the spindle in its bearing, and then sliding the finger pieceend of the spindle from its bearing after which I may readily insert the cross-:- bar through a loop in a strap portion and attach the same by inversely performing the above described disengaging operations.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a readily detachable cross bar for mounting between a pair of arms and which may be used in various places, which is simple of construction and is found very convenient where the replacing of wrist-watch straps and thelike is repeatedly necessary for re-newing of a worn watch strap.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards theconstruction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood thatl reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A bail-member having arm portions with bearings in their ends, a tubular crossbar with bearings :in its ends, a spindle ex tending through the bearings of said arms and crossbar, a finger-piece on said spindle, and yielding means for holding said crossbar in said bearings, said spindle being mounted to be partially withdrawn byniair sally movingsaid finger-piece whereby'said cross-bar may be removed from saidframe.
2. A bail-member having arm portions with bearings in their ends, a spindle in said bearings, a cross-bar on said-spindle extending between said bearings, spring meansacting between said bar and spindle for ,normally holding said spindle projecting from said cross bar and in bearing-engagingposition, and a finger-piece on one end of said spindle and extendmg beyond one of said bearings for moving said spindle relative to said cross-ibarjfor withdrawing its opposite end from its bearing against the action of said spring to remove the crossbar from the frame, said spindle returning to normal position in said cross-bar when released.
3. A buckle comprising a frame having hearings in its ends, a cross-bar extending betweensaid bearings, a spindle extending through said cross-bar, yieldable means for causing said spindle to normally project from each end of said cross bar to extend bar engaging said bearings, an abutment on said spindle, a spring acting between said abutments to hold said spindle normallyin bearing engaging position, and a finger piece on one end or said spindle for moving said spindle against the action of said spring to withdraw the other end of said spindle from one of said bearings whereby said cross-bar may be removed .from said arms.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
