- UNITED xSTATES FRANK GARDNER, OF DALLAS, TEXAS.'
1 runt? JACK.
- Application ated october s, 1924. serial No. 742,558.
To all whom it may concern.' Y
Be it known that I, FRANK GARDNER, a
, citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding .at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new andl useful Improvements Vin Pump l Jacks, of which the'following is a specificabend or distort the same is obviated.
A further object is to produce a long stroke with a short beam.
Another object is to provide a simple, durable and eicient jack capable of heavy duty and long life.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specifica-tion and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a pump jack constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the jack detached from the well,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 6--6 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 7 is an enlarged sec-tional view taken on the line 7 7 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional view on the lino 8 8 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates a base formed of a pair of I-beams. At the rear end of the base is pivotcd a Samson post 11 composed of a pair of channel members having their open sides facing, as is shown in Fig` 6. A tenon block 12 is bolted between the lower ends of the channel members of the post and has a' depending central tenon or ear, 13. A bearing bolt 14 passes through the base and the tenon, the latter being spaced from the beams of the base by blocks 15. The block and post are spaced above the base to clear the latter when swlnging.
A knuckle joint is formed at the upper end of the post b a bearing block 16 bolted in the post and aving upstanding ears 17 receiving a tenon 18 depending from a block 19 as is best shown in Fig. 5. The tenon is pivoted between the ears on a bolt 20. The
block 19 is bolted between the rear ends of channel members formin a horizontal beam 21. At the front end o the beam hangers 22 spaced apart by a plate 23 are bolted to the inner faces of the channels. The hangers have hooks 24 depending below the beam and directed forwardly for the gudgeon A of the polish rod, B. The forward end of the base is fastened to the well casing by a clamp 25.
One of the important features of the invention is a toggle joint and pitman whereby the beam is swung. A lower link 26 has an ear 27 pivotedvon a bolt 28 between cheek blocks 29 mounted on the inner side of the base beams as is shown best in Fig. 8. An upper link 30, has an eye journaled on a pin 31 Fig. 5) confined in a slotted bearing block 32 secured within and between the channels of the post 11, just below the block 16. An upright pitman 33 has an ear 34 at its lower end. This ear is received in the fork 35 formed on the lower end of the pitman 30 (Fig. 7) and this fork is disposed in a yoke 36 on the upper end of the link 26. The yoke is mounted in a shackle 37 of a link 38. A king bolt 39 passing through the ports 34, 35, 36 and 37 forms a pivot and constitute the knuckle of a toggle joint.
The link 38 is connected to the pull-rod of the pumping power. When the beam 21 is in/a horizontal position as is shown'in full lines in Fig. 1, the links 26 and 30 are alined and inclined from the base to the post, forming a. support and a brace for the latter. At its upper end the pitman has a cap 40 having a transverse fulcrum boss 41 engaging in the step of a bearing block 42 (Fig. 4) bolted to the underside of the beam.
ln operating the jack the toggle joint is broken by the downward pressure of the pitman 33 on the king bolt 39, due to the load lifting the beam 21.
on the polish rod B. When the link 38 is moved to the right (Fig. 1) on the slack stroke of the connecting rod, the pitman. is free to act. When the toggle joint is broken the links 26 and 30 are swung downwardly and the Samson post 11 is pulled forwardly, whereby the beam 21 and pitman are tilted forwardly as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The forward or tilting movement of the beam is suiicient to compensate for its swing as the polish rod moves downward, thus keeping the gudgeon A in line with they rod and seated in the hooks 24. Y
This operation produces av long stroke lowing to the toggle joint and the tilting post and the fulcrum on the pitman. Also the travel of the polish rod is followed by the hooks 24 and the end of the beam. Upon the pull stroke the link 38 is moved tov restore the links 26 and 30 during which movement the pitman 33 is elevated, thus By reason of the toggle joint a comparatively short beam' and base" may be used and a compact and substantial jack is thus produced. The parts may of course be constructed in accordance with the field practice and various changes in the size and shape and arrangement may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
