Application filed March a, 1921. sen in 449,297.
To all whom it mayconcem: 7
Be it known that 1, ANDnnAs R. LARSEN,
a citizen of the United States, resident of b Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scarecrows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in scarecrows and is more particularly directed to'a scarecrow capable of giving not only a visual alarm but an audible alarm in addition thereto.
The objectof the invention is to provide an improved scarecrow.
Other objects of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, there has been disclosed a structure designed to carry out the objects of the invention, but it is to i be understood that the invention isnot confined to the exact features shown, as various changes may be made within the scope of the claims which follow.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved scarecrow;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure is a plan view of the scarecrow showing in dotted lines the position of one arm in striking position;
Figure a is a View showing an arm mounted in upwardly extending position.
In the selected embodiment of this invention here disclosed, there is provided a scarecrow having a body portion adapted to be mounted on the ground and provided with means adapted to be actuated by the wind, and thereby caused to strike against the body portion of the scarecrow to produce an audible alarm. The sound of such alarm is increased by so forming the body portion that it may have resonant properties. This is effected by the employment of a hollow chamber or box. As here shown the body portion 5 of the scarecrow is formed to provide a closed resonance chamber 6. The body portion 5 is preferably of sheet material. For this purpose sheet tin is a desirable material. The front and rear sections 7 and S are connected by the strip 9 to form the closed resonance chamber 6. The several sections may be secured together by any convenient means such as soldering.
shaped to a human This body portion 5 is preferably simulate the head and trunk of ody. I i V. v
This body portion may be conveniently supported by means of a tubular upright 11 which is adapted to haveits lower extremity inserted in the ground. This -tubular"u-pright 11 is preferably providedadjacentits lower end with a base plate 12 apertured to receive the upright and hold in position thereon by means of the cotter-pins" 13. The end portion of the. uprighthavingthe base plate is adapted to beburied in -the ground, the base plate providing a more Se-- cure support for the tubular upright. A rod '1 1 is adaptedtelescopically to be'received within the upper open end of-theupright and may be held in a plurality oflvertical adjustable positions by means of theset screws 15. The upper end of this rod 14* is preferably provided .with a tapering part 16 adapted partially to project through an aperture formed in the top portion of the strip 9. The body portion is *thus freely pivotally supported by this part 16. The bottom portion of the strip 9 is apertured freely to permit the passage therethrough of the rod 14:.
Means are movably mounted on the scare crow and adapted when moved by the wind to strike the body portion and the sound caused by such striking is increased by the resonant hollow body portion. For this purpose, two hollow members 17 and 18 which are shaped to simulate human arms are movably mounted adjacent the shoulder of the body portion. These members are similarly made of sheet metal and are formed by two similarly shaped sections 19 joined together adjacent their peripheral edges by means of a suitably shaped strip 20 of sheet material. This joining is suitably effected by soldering. A convenient means of mounting each of the members 17 and 18 to the body portion 5 is by way of the provision of a pair of terminally'upstanding pins 21 and secured to the side strip of the body portion adjacent each shoulder. Each member 17 is provided with a pair of staples 22 whereby each member 17 may be pivotally mounted upon the body portion 5. Adjacent the pivotal mounting of the members 17 to the body portion 5, the members 17 are each formed with angular portions 23. The purpose of this substantially V-shaped portion of each memher is to, permit the arm-like members 17 to swing about their pivotal mountings in a greater are than would be the case if these portions 23 were square. I
These members 17 are adapted to be blown by the wind forwardly or rearwardly with relation to the scarecrow body and to strike against the same as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 3. Due to the fact that the body portion 5 of the scarecrow provides a resonant chamber, the sound produced by the striking of the member 17 against the body is greatly increased.
I claim as my invention:
1. A scarecrowhaving a hollow body portion and hollow means movably mounted on the scarecrow adapted when moved by the wind to strike the body portion, whereby the. sound caused by said striking is increased by the resonance of said hollow body p r on- QJ'A scarecrow having a closed resonant body portion, members movably mounted on said body portion to swing in a substantially horizontal plane back and forth upon actuation by the wind to strike said resonant body portion.
3. A scarecrow having a hollow closed .portion shaped to simulate the head and trunk of a body, hollow closed members shaped to simulate human arms, said arms being movably mounted adjacent the shoulders of said portion and adapted upon actuation by the wind to strike the body portion whereby the sound caused by said striking is increased by the resonance of said body portion and members.
4. A scarecrow having a closed resonant body portion, means movably mounted on said body portion and adapted upon actuation by the wind to strike said resonant body portion, means for pivotally supporting the scarecrow whereby it may be turned by the wind, and means for adjusting said pivotal supporting means whereby the scarecrow may be held in a plurality of adjusted positions.
A scarecrow comprising a hollow body portion. hollow side members, and means pivotally mounting the side members on, the body portion to swing in a substantially horizontal plane back and forth whereby the side member's upon actuation by the wind will strike the body portion.
6. A scarecrow comprising a hollow resonant body portion, side hollow resonant members, and means pivotally mounting the side members on the body portion to be free to swing back and forth upon actuation by the wind and strike the body portion to give forth sound vibrations from the hollow body portion and side members.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day ofFebruary, 1921.
ANDREAS R. LARSEN.
