GEORGE P. WI GGINTOLT, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TOJKALAMAZOO LOOSE LEAF IBINDER CQ, OF .KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
sn'nnr' BINDER.
I Application filed'lay 28, 1925. Serial No. 33,434.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEonenP. WIGGINTON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at i the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of which the following is a specification.
sheet binders.
In certain classes of work, for instance, county, State and other public record work,
it is found convenient to make the records the covers may be readily renewed as 00- casion requires.
Objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the acompanying drawing, forming a part of this invention, in which:
Fig. I is a perspective View of a binder embodying the features of my invention. I
Fig. II is a sectional view on a line corresponding toline 2--2 of Fig. IV with the top cover open.
Fig. III is a on a line corresponding to line 3--3 of Fig. II of the permanently bound sheet body removed from the covers.
Fig. IV is an enlarged detail section on a line corresponding to line 14 of Fig. II, the binding being omitted from the covers in order to better illustrate the structural details thereof.
the sheets.
Fig. V1 is a perspective view of a modified detail view mainly in section form of post bar, both members of the coupling post being separate from the post bars and assembled therewith only when it is desired to permanently lock the sheets. 5 Michigan, have invented certainmew and useful Improvements in .Sheet Bmders, of.
Fig. VII is a perspective view of one oi: thepost bar coupling members coacting with connection with the post bars of Fig. VI.
Fig IX is a fragmentary section on a'lin'e corresponding 'to line 9-9 of Fig. X of a modified embodiment of my invention, the modification being in the covers.
Fig. X is a fragmentary section on a line corresponding to line 107-10 of Fig. IX.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the sectional lines.
Referring to the drawings, the covers 1 and 2, in the embodiment shown in Figs. I and. II, are provided with a connecting back 3 and with a binding means comprising the clamping bars 4 hinged within the covers and having holes or sockets 5 therein.
The clamping means for the clampin bars is indicated at 6. As the details of this binding means form no part of my present invention they are not illustrated or described herein.
The sheets 7 are provided with aligned Each of the post bars 11 is provided with a coupling post member 13 having a plurality of annular grooves therein providing annular ratchet teeth 14. The opposed post.
bar has a hole 15 therein adapted to receive the"'tubular or female. post member 16 which has ahead 17 at its outer end to engage the bar. These post members have longitudinal slits 18 therein and a plurality of pawls 19,
the post bar coupling member shown in Fig. This invention relates to improvements in V Fig. VIII is a perspective view of the the inner ends of these pawls being turned inwardly at20 to engagethe teeth 14 of-the post members 13, thus providing aratchet engagement so that whenthe --bars, with their posts, are engaged'with the sheets and the coupling post members 16 inserted and pressed down to clamp the bars firmly upon the sheets, the bars are permanently connected, the connecting means being within the sheet body so that the sheets cannot be freed without such manipulation as would des tro the binding means.
T e post members 13. coact with the posts .for temporarily holding the sheets during each post bar 21 is provided with a pair of the reparation of the volume or the com- Y pletion of the sheets to be permanently bound. In the modification shown in Fig. VI,
posts 10, the coupling post members 13 not being .fixed to the post bars but being inserted'through holes 22, each post bar 21 having a hole'22 at each end thereof.
In the modification shown in Figs. IX and X, the studs 23 have transverse holes 24 therein adapted to receive the' locking rods 25' which are arranged through the covers 26, this means'of securing the covers taking the place oftlie binding means 6 of Fig. II by means of which the clamping bars are clamped upon the post bar.
My improved binder is especially well adapted for the handling of public records which require permanent bindings, the law prohibiting, in many instances, of loose.
sheets forsuch public records. However, it is desirable to have means for handling the loose sheets temporarily while the volume is being compiled or the sheets collected and my improved binder provides such means.
I haveillustrated and described my improvements in embodiments which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate and describe other embodiments and adaptations which might be desirable for particular records or sheets as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired. I
Having thus described my invention,
what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
un one to such post members, and coacting tubular posts providing permanent coupling means for said post barswithin the sheet body.
2. In a binder, the combination with sheets ceive blnding posts, of covers provided with binding members having sockets therein, po'st'bars provided with studs engageable with said sockets in said binding members,
provided with holes adapted to resaid post bars having sheet engaging posts thereon, and coupling postsfor said post bars comprising male'members on one post bar having a pluralit of ratchet-like annular teeth and coacting tubular. members engaging the opposed post bar and telescoping with said male members, said tubular members being longitudinally slitted pro- ,viding spring pawls coacting with said teeth when said coupling post members are telescoped within the sheet body.
3. In a binder, the combination with sheets having holes adapted to receive binding and coupling posts, of covers, binding means comprising clamping bars having sockets. therein, post bars provided with outwardly projecting studs engageable with said sockets and with sheet binding posts disposed in staggered relation relative to the posts of the coacting bar, and coacting coupling post members for said bars engageable within the sheet body to permanently connect the bars.
4. In a binder, the combination with sheets provided with holes adapted to receive binding posts, of covers provided with binding members having sockets'therein', post bars provided with studs engageable with said sockets in said binding members,
said post bars having sheet engaging posts thereon, and coupling posts for said post bars comprising coacting members engageable within the sheet body.
5.. In a binder, the combination of sheets, covers, and binding bars removably 'engageable with said covers and provided with coacting non-releasable coupling means engageable within the sheet body for permanently securing the binding bars upon the sheet'body. 7
6. In a binder for sheets adapted to relisceive binding posts, of covers, post bars 7 provided with'sheet engaging posts and with cover engaging means vwhereby the bars are removably secured within the covers, and non-releasablecoupling means for permanently connecting said bars having co-engaging parts wlthin the sheet body. v
7. In a hinder, the combination of sheets,
covers, post bars provided with sheet .en-
gaging posts, said covers and post-bars being provided with co-enga ing means whereby the bars are remova ly secured within the covers, and non-releasable couphng means for sald bars COII'IPIISII'Ig coacting members engageable within the sheet bodv whereby the bars are permanently secured upon the sheet body.
8. 111 21 binder, thec-ombination of sheets; covers, post bars provided with sheet engaging pq s ts, said covers and post bar's be- .ing provided with (to-engaging member's whereby the bars are removably secured 10 within the covers, and non-releasable means for permanently connecting said bars.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE P. WIGGINTON.
