UNITED lSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID 1I. BALLOU, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR T0 REX MFG. C0., 0F
l PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CLIP FOR PENCILS.
Application filed February To ail whom, ,it may concern:
Be it known thaty I, DAVID M. BALLoU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clips for Pencils, of'which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to certain new an useful improvements in clips for pencils, and the primary objectof. the invention is to provide eiective and simplified means for enabling the clip to be easily and quickly applied vto a pencil orto a pen. Y v
- The invention has still further and other objects which will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pencil, partly broken away and in section toillustrate the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fie'. l.
igure 3 is a detail view of the clip, an
Figure 4 is a like view of the fastenin collar prior to inturning of the edges thereo In proceeding in accordance with the present invention an outer casing 1 is employed into the outer end of which a metal plug 2 havin a head 2 is threaded. The plug 2 rotata ly supports the operating tube 3 by means ofA a bead 3 on the tube, the tube being .for the purpose of expelling and retreating the lead, bymeans associated with the tube, not illustrated.
The upper end of .the plug is formed with an outwardly projecting circular collar 1l which latter is projected through thee apen ture 01"' 'a ring-like head 5 formed on `the inner end of the clip 6, theA head being dis posed at substantially right angles to the arm portion of the clip, which arm portion lies along the casing.
A ferrule 7 has its edge 8 inturned'and clamped between the plug 2 and the outer casing 1, while the upper edge 10 of the ferrule is cut-out ati) to receive the outer end of the clip arm and is bent over onto the head 5 to hold the latter firmly on and against the outer end of the' plug Q.
-The sleeve 11 which ca.rries, the eraser or rubber plug has an inturned bottom l2 and has a disk .13 seated on the edge of an ex- 14, 1'25. serial No; 9,137.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the sleeve 11, concealsvthe inturned edge 10, of the'collar, and also the head 5, so as to present a finished appearance of the parts, and in addition the casing 1, can be unscrewed from the plug 2, if desiredvwithout disturbing the remaining described parts.
Having thus described my invention what I claim asy new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a writing instrument, an outer casn ing having a plug threaded in its outer end anda tube in the plug, a clip having a substantially ring-like head, a collar on ,the plug received 1n the opening of said head, a
' fermle having inturned end edges one of whih is clamped between the" casing end and plug and the other of which is enga ed ove., said head to hold same onto the ug andta sleeve seated on the outer edge o? the ferrhle and having a part engaged with the tube, the adjacent edge of the tube being' extended at anV angle and engaged with said partof the tube. l
2. In a writing instrument, an outer casing having a plug threaded in its outer end and a tulle in the plug, a clip having a substantially ring-like head, a collar on the plug received' in the opening of said head, u ferrulge having inturned end edges one of which isclau'iped between the casing end over said head to hold same onto he plug, and a. member on the outer end off'the tube overlying the outer edge of'thevferrule.
In a writinginstrument,` n -outer casing rhaving a plugv threaded th rein, a clip having a head seated on the plug, and a ferand plugv and the other of which icngaged rule surrounding the plug and having in- 1h00 turned ed es one of which latter is clam ed between t e plug and casing and the ot er of which engages over the head t0 hold the latter onto the plug.
4. In a writing lnstrunicnt, an outercas-'w g, engaged with the casing, u. clip' having a head seated on saidmember, and holding means for the cli having a part engaged over and with t e head to ino' a member hold saine onto the member and also having'A 11o 2. 1,ee8,eao
-inturned part engaged with the head to hold same against the shoulder and having a part formed with an inturned portion engaged with the plug to rigidly secure the head thereto.
6. In a writing instrument, a casing, a )lug engaged with an end ofthe casing, a clip having a head engaged with the plug, and means encircling the plug and head and having inturned parts one of which engages over the head to rigidly clamp same to the plug and the other of which is engaged with the plug so as t0 be ixedly connected thereto.
7. In a writing instrument, a casing. a member removably connected to the casing, a clip having a head engaged with the member, a terrule engaged about the head and member and having inturned portions 011e of which engages the head and the other the member to rigidly connect the head to the member. I
8. In a writing instrument, a casing, a a plug having a reduced part forming a shoulder carried by the casing, a clip having a head engaged with the shoulder, and a member engaged about the head and lm and having inturned parts one of wiici clamps the head against the shoulder and the other of which engages the plug so as to rigidly connect the head to the plug.
9. writing instrument having a casing, a threaded bearing guide plug screwed into one end of said casing, said plug having a shoulder and a collar portion extending above said shoulder, a spring clip having a resilient arm lying along said casing and having a laterally extending end with an openinfT therein embracing said collar, and means eing provided for securing said clip end to said shoulder.
10. A writing instrument having a easing, 'a threaded bearing guide plug Screwed into one end of said casing, a spring clip having a resilient arm lying along said casing and having a laterally extending end immovablv secured to the plug to prevent a relative rotation of said clip and plug.
l1. A writing instrument having a casing, a threaded bearing guide plug screwed into one end of said casing. a spring clip havingr a resilient arm lying along said casing and having a laterally extending end with an opening therein receiving a portion of said plug, and means for securing said clip end to said plug.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
