To whom 'it may concer/n:
Be it knownk that we, JESSE MERCER and ED MERCER, citizens of the United States, residin t Benton VandVVest Frankfort, re-
41"spectively, in the county of Franklin,` and State of Illinois, have invented new andv u'seful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification. g/
This` invention relates broadly to signs and has for its ,primary object the provision ofa sign which may also be utilized as a i the attention of the driver and other persons along the roadway so as to warn the' driver that he is approaching a" point of possible dan erand to warn-othersvof the approach of t e vehicle.- j" l A A"further object of the inventionis the provision ofjajsign signal which in addition i to the above and other advantages embodies novel details of construction, whereby certain elements are interchangeable which permits of the sign being arrangedfto suitdif-V vferent road conditions and different puri' poses.
With the above and other objects in view,
`theinvention further includes the following novel features land details of construction,
to be hereinafter more fullydescribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings vand pointed outin t-he appended claim.
' In the drawings Figurel is a front' elevation of a signsignal constructed in accordance with the invention. l
. Figure2 'is a vertical sectional view of the same. f
Figure 3 is a rear elevation'.
Figure 4 is an`enlarge`d fragmentary sectional view-tallen `through the lens carey-ing panel.
ft Figure 5 is an enlarged .fragmentary section taken ontlie line of VFigure 1.
Referring to #drawings'in detail wherein like characters o'f reference denote corresponding parts, thereference character indicates a support whichmaybe of any suitable character, but which preferably consists of a pipe or standard having its upper portion flattened as illustrated in igures '2 and 3 of the drawings. This standard supports Ta frame which includes lparallel side bars 11 and 12and end bars 13, all o f which that one of t e pins may be removed while the other pin may act as a pivot, whereby v the bar 12 may be swungoutward. The vframe further includes an'intermediate bar 16 whose opposite edges are longitudinally 4 grooved as indicated at 17 in Figure 2 of the drawings. If desired, the sion may include a supplemental frame 18 wliich-is consrtructed in substantially the' same manner as the frame just described and Vthis supplemental frame may be secured to-the main frame bystra s or similar fastening devices 19. JA hook-s aped element 20 extends from the standard and provides al seat for the lower bar 13' of the main frame, whilethe supplemental frame is -held in -place by a bo t orI similar fastenin device 21. A cross bar 22 preferably exten' s transversely ofthe standard, 10 and the opposite ends of this cross bar are shaped 'to provide hooks 23 which engage around the side 'bars 11 and 12 of the frame so that the said' frame will be securely held in lace.
Slidable within t e grooves of the main frame between the u per end bar 13 and the intermediate bar 16 1s an aluminum or other metal panel 25 is preferablywcovered by a I glass panel 26 so as to protect the lettering thereon from the elements. Y
'Located within thegroovesof the frame i between the lower end ofthe bar 13 and the intermediate bar 16 are :af-preferably aluminum panel 27 and a second aluminum panel 28, the said panels bein spaced a, art. While the panel 28 is provide with a p uralit'y of Yopenings 29.. The space between the panels 28 and 29 is filled with a suitable=plastic material such as putty, indlcated at 30 and llt) set Within this material and extending through the openings 29 are a number of light reflecting elements 31. These light refleeting elements may be of any suitable shape or design, the ones shown consisting of circular eoncavo-convex lenses having a multiplicity of faces on their convex sides.
These elements provide light refiecting members which serve to readily attract attention when located in the path of the rays of light from an automobile or other relatively powerful light.
The supplemental frame 18 may be provided with a preferably aluminum panel 32 which forms a backing for a mirror 33 and a glass panel 34, the latter preferably having imprinted thereon in red or other attractive color the word Danger,
It will be apparent from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the sign signal may be placed at a convenient point and at desiredlocations along a roadway for the purpose of Warning the public .of possible danger oints, the character of the invention serving to provide a signal or Warning both day and night.
Further the construction is such that the panels may be removed and others substituted and the lsign may consist of any number of panels.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make vsuch changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A sign comprising a support, a frame mounted thereon, separate panelsA mounted in said frame, one of said anels including spaced plates, one of which 1s provided with a plurality of openings, light reflecting elements extending through said openings and means located between the plates and engaging the light reflecting elements to hold the latter in position.
In testimony whereof We afix our signa-y tures.
JESSE MERCER. ED MERCER.
