Description

' Aug. 11, 1925.
H. D. VOGT SIGN Filed Sept. 14 1923 ATTORNEY WITNESS:
- nmra HOWARD D. VOGT, F SAGINAW, MIECG.
SIGN.
Application filed September It, 1923. Serial No. 862,679.
To all whom it may comm:
, Be it known that I, HOWARD D. Vocr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements inSigns', of which the following is a specification. W
This invention relatesto signs and has for its object the provision of a novel sign structure which may be called'self illuminating inasmuch as it is designed for use along road ways, at corners and crossings, at railroad crossmgs, upon the tail boards of trucks, vehicles and the like, or at any other location Where it will receive light from the lamps of approaching automobiles, the light being reflected by the sign to indicate danger or to mean any other signal, the sign being moreover so formed that any legends,- symbols or the like thereon will stand out very prominently and conspicuously. I v
- ith the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully-described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation ofa sign constructedin accordance with my invention 4 Figure 2 is a section therethrough on the line 22' of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a detail section on the line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation show.- ing a modified form, V I
Figure 5 is a section therethrough on the line 5-5 of Figure 4,
"Figure 6 is a rear elevation of anotherform,
Figure 7 is a similar view of a still different modification,
Figure 8' is a detail section showing another modification, v
' f Figure9 is a fragmentary view of another orm.
Referring more particularly'to the drawings and especially to 3,1 have shown the sign as formed-5mm a sheet or pane 10 of glass or other transparent material having one surface.- 11 plane and having its front'surface ribbed as shown. at 12 so asto have a somewhat prismatic shape. This glass might be of; any desired color throughout and red is convenient thoughsomewhat over worked and might therefore result in some mishap 'on accountofconfusing it with a tail lamp or warning lantern at an excavation. Theback'of the to glass, that is the 'plane side 11 is coated with a silver backing 13 to produce arnirror efl'ect which will insure reflection of any light thrown upon the front of the sign. This device may of course bear any desired legend or symbol depending upon the'purpose for which the sign is used. In the present instance I have shown an arrow and the word Detour-' though this is simply an example of the possibilities To make this reading matter stand out prominently, some mode of treatment must be used on the back ground and in the present instance I have shown in'these three figures the silver backing as omitted as indicated atl t to define the symbol and the legend.
In the. use of this form-it is quite apparent that if the si 11 be locatedalong the road at any desired point where the rays from vehicle lamps may strike upon it, such light will be reflected and make the sign very conspicuous, the legend and symbol thereon standing outprominently in black.
Instead of the face of the glass pane bemg formed with the alternate rldges and grooves of a sharp nature, I may prefer that this face be molded to define a plurality of knob like projections 15 arranged mstaggered relation as shown in F1 res 4- and 5. In this instance the treatment to define the to legend and symbol may be the same as above described though it is apparent that some other means may be resorted to.
a In Figure 6 I have illustrated the slgn as consisting of a glass pane or plate 16 of at some solid color but smooth'on both s des, the. rear side being coated with the sllver backin as above described with the backing scrape away or omitted to define the reading matter. too
In Figure 7 I have shown the glass pane or plate 1'7 as having both sides smooth with the letters 18 of the legend silvered on the back of the sheet. I i
Figure 8 shows'the glass pane or sheet 19 as having the letters 20 of the legend molded with ribs or corrugations, the backs of the letters being silvered as shown at 21 and the spaces between and around the letters, or'the remaining area, being of any preferred solid color as shown at 22,
' In Figure 9 I have shown he back of v the sheet 23 as painted black or some other dark color in such a way as to define the letters 24 of the sign or this back ground might be frosted and the letters shown in red or any other contrasting color. In fact the possibilities as to coloring, backing with reflecting material, frosting and ribbing the front surface are somewhat unlimited and there is no limitation in respect thereto.
While'I have shown and described the, preferred embodiments of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changesin the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not de art from the spirit of the in- 15 vention or t e scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
a A sign formed from a sheet of transparent material ha its rear side plane and.- lo
coated with a acking of light reflecting material, .thev backing being omitted along certain areas to define legends which will be non-reflective, the front of-the glass being formed with a refractive surface only in 25 front of the letters forfning'the legend,
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
. HOWARD D. VOGT.
