Description

AVMHDENCE SOUND AMPLIFYING AND REPRODUCING DEVICE FOR TALKING MACHINES AND OTHER SOUND REPRODUCING INSTRUMENTS Filed Dec. 15, 1924 Patented Jan. 5, 1926. I
UNITED s'rA'ras PATENT OFFICE;
ADOLPH MIDENCE, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
SOUND AMPLTFYING AND REPRODUCING DEVICE FOR TALKING MACHINES AND OTHER SOUND-REPRODUCING- INSTRUMENTS.
-Application filed December 15, 1924. fierial' No. 756,152.
To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, AooLrH Mmnncn, of 4 Rue du Printemps, Paris, France, commission merchant, have invented Sound Amplifyin and Reproducing Devices for Talking Mac ines and Other Sound-Reproducing Instruments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has for its object a sound amplifying and reproducing device for talking machines andother sound reproducing instruments which is essentially character ized by the combination:
11. Of a flexible light horn or trumpet of variable length (telescopic or bellows horn for instance) the large end of which is mounted in a frame;
5. Of a reproducing diaphragm connected to the small end of said horn, the'diameter of the diaphragm being preferably, of a length equal to the height or width of the frame at the large end of the horn;
- 0. Of extensible members (lazy. tongs for instance) pivoted, at one end, to the frame at the large end of the horn and, at the other end, to the reproducing diaphragm.
By varying the length of the horn and the width of its folds (in the case of a horn with bellows), it is possible to vary the degree of amplification of the sounds, to regulate the quality of emission of the latter and to obtain in the'tolded or closed position, a horn occupying an extremely reduced space.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood, a form of construction oi the sound amplifying and reproducing device forming the subject-matter of the said invention will be described hereafter, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the device.
Figs. 2 and 3 are side and plan views of this device having a bellows horn in its open position.
Fig. 4 is a side view of the device in the closed position.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, thedevice in accordance with the invention essentially comprises a horn 1, of variable length, the large end of which is mounted in a frame 2.
In the example shown, said horn has a square cross-section and is provided with bellows, but it may be of any other shape or form d m y be made of sheep skin o drum hide, lined or not, and may be con-- structed in any suitable manner.
The small end of said horn 1 fits on the central socket 3 of a reproducing diaphragm 4 of any type, the circular bod of which. has a diameter equal tothe lengt or width of the frame 2. The diaphragm is provided at two diametrically opposed points, with pivots 5, to which are pivoted the ends'of extensible members, for instance, lazy-tongs 6, which are pivoted, at their other ends, to pivots 7 secured on brackets 8 rigid with the frame 2.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the device in accordance with the invention permits the length of the horn and the width of the folds to be varied, so that it is possible to vary the degree of amplification and to regulate the quality of the sounds emitted.
in the form of construction illustrated, the extensible horn is connected at its small end to a reproducing diaphragm of special construction.
This reproducer i which has been described in the United States patent application filed on the 15th day of December, 19%, Serial No. 756,151 in the name of the applicant, is devised in such a manner that the vibrating diaphragm and the needlecarrier 9 are not exposed to shocks, in case the reproducer is shipped.
Moreover, the reproducing diaphragm is adjustable so as to permit the optional use of a needle or of a sapphire. F or this purpose, the circular frame 10 of the reprcducer, which projects in front of the needle-carrier and of the vibrating diaphragm, is, as er:- plained in the above mentioned United States patent application, provided with a hole 11 to receive one end of a suitable supporting rod (not shown) when the reproducer is used with a needle. The said reproducer is moreover provided with a hole 13 arranged at an angle to the hole .11 and adapted to receive the same supporting rod, when there-producer is used with a sapphire, and is in a position at right angles to the preceding position.
The above described arrangements are, of course, given by way of example only. The
forms, materials and dimensions of the con- The extensible horn, instead of being provided with bellows, as described, might be for instance a telescopic horn having any cross section, square, rectangular, circular, etc. Claims:
1. A sound amplifyin and reproducing device for sound repro ucing instruments comprising a light flexible extensible and collapsible horn, a frame secured to the large end of said horn, a reproducing diaphragm secured to the small end of the horn, and means for causing the length of the horn to vary for varying the degree of amplification and the quality of sound, said means functioning to hold the horn in its various ad- 4 justed positions.
2. A sound amplifyin and reproducing device for sound re re ucing instruments comprising a supple ight extensible horn, a frame secured to the large end of said horn, a reproducing diaphragm connected to the small end of the horn, the diameter of said diaphragm being substantially equal to the height or width of the frame, and means extending along the horn for holding the same in various positions to permit varying the degree of amplification and the quality of the sounds.
3. A sound amplifying and reproducing device for sound reproducing instruments comprising a flexible, light extensible horn, a frame connected to the large end of said horn, a reproducing diaphragm connected to the small end of the horn, the diameter of said diaphragm being, substantially the same as the height or width of the frame, extensible members extending along the horn and pivotally connected to the base and diaphragm, said extensible members being ivotally connected to the frame and diapliragm and functionin to hold the horn in various adjusted positions.
4. A sound amplifyin and reproducing device for sound re rodhcing instruments comprising a light, exible extensible horn, a frame connected to the large end of said horn, a reproducin diaphragm of substantially the same heig t or width as the frame connected to the small end of the horn and oppositely disposed extensible elements pivotally connecting the frame to the diaphragm.
The foregoing specification of my Sound amplifying and reproducing device for talking machines and other sound reproducing instruments signed by me this nineteenth day of September, 1924.
A. MIDENCE.
