To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I Ror J. Wmson, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bucyrus in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Road-Working Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings representing like parts.
My present invention relates road working machines, and more particularly to an improved road working machine whereby the operations of scarifymg, scraping, and rolling the surface of a road may be erformed in one operation and by a sin He unitary machine. 1
n road work it is at present customary and, because of the limitations in the apparatus, necessary to first run a machine over the road and scarify such road the machine for scarifying being followe by a separate and distinct machine having a road scraping tool mounted thereon which scrapes and levelsthe surface of the road, and afterwards a third unitary machine 1s drawn over the road, which machine is supplied with a roller for rolling and compactmg the surface of the road. With 8.}V18W to overcoming the objections above noted and for reducing the cost of upkeep of roads, I have designed a unitary machine wherein the scarifying, road scraping, and road working tools are mounted on, or are associated with, a single unitar power lant or propelling mechanism, t e scari- Eer, road grading tool, and. roller being mounted one behind the other and in the order named sothat the necessar operarolling take place in any point of a road successivellly and, considering the road as' a whole, sim

I preferably employ as a power or propelling mechanism my road grading machine forming the subject matter of my copending appllcation, Serial No. 630,498, filed April 7, 1923, and on such mechanism .I mount in advance of the road working or grading tool thereon a scarifying tool such as described and claimed in my copending application, Serial N 0. 734,948, filed Aug. 29, 1924. Associated with such road working tool and adapted .to be drawn thereby is an improved road roller which serves to compact the material of the road that has been scarified and scraped by the scarifier- 'ported by,

The principal object of my invention therefore, is an improved, combined road scarifying, scraping, and rolling machine. Referring to the drawings, 10 designates, generally, a road grading machine or propelling mechanism comprised essentially of a unit power plant 11 having attached to its rear axle housing the rear ends of frame members 12 which extend forwardly and upwardly and thence downwardl and the front ends thereof rest on, an are supa front axle 13 provided with guiding wheels 14. The front end of the power plant 11 is sup orted on a bracket 15 extending between 51c side members 12, and immediately in front of the ower plant 11 is a platform 16 on which t e operator stands and also in front of the power plant on the frame members 12 is supported a seat 17 for the operator within reach of control wheels 18 and steerin wheel 19. Secured to the lower front end of the side frame members 12 in any suitable manner is a rearwardly extending subframe 20 to the under side of which is secured a circular track 21 on which is convenient with a scraping tool 23. On the front of the side frame members 12 is. secured a member 24 to which are secured the ends of chains 25 attached at their rear ends to a scarifier tool 26 that is pivotally attached at 27 to the subframe 20.
Numeral 28 designates a rectangular frame, the side mem rs of which are provided with yokes 29, the arms of which extend upwardly through perforat ons and such arms are threaded to receive the nuts 30. Such yokes are utilized to securely clamp in position on the under face of the rectan lar frame 28 a shaft 31 on which is rotata ly mounted a plurality of roller sections 32. These roller sections 32 are comprised of a cylindrical member provided with radially inwardl extending lugs 33 to which are secured t 1e outer ends of rectan 'ular spokes 34, the inner end of these spokes bein secured to members 35 formed integral with, and extending outwardly from, a hub 36. The hub 36 is drilled to allow free rotation of the roller members 32 on the shaft 31 and the length of the hubs 36 is sufiicient to prevent the outer periphery of the roller members from enagmg with each other, as clearly shown in ig. 5. The interior of the hub 36 is enlar to form an annular chamber 37 which connects by means of an oil or grease cup 38 with the outer atmos here and which grease or oil cup 38 is utilized to fill the annular chamber 37 with lubricant sufiicient in quantity to obviate the necessity of frequent oilings of the shaft bearing.
Secured to the upper rear ends of each of the side frame members 12 in an suitable manner are pillow blocks 39 in w ich is rotatabl mounted a shaft 40. Secured to the sha 40 ad'acent to each of the pillow blocks 39, but etween such illow blocks, are members 41 each rovide with a rearwardly extending portion 42. The rear portions 42 are riveted to an angular 1ron member 43 that extends, as clearly shown in Fi s. 2 and 4, transversely of the rear end of the unit power lant 11 and between the driving wheels of t e machine. Secured to the upper central portion of the channel iron 43 and extending rearwardly therefrom to any convenient distance is a channel iron member 44. Secured to the ends of the angular iron member 43 are braces 45, the rearward ends of these braces being secured to the extreme rear end of the channel member 44. The channel member 44 is provided adjacent to its front end with a bearing late 46. Secured to the front cross bar rame 28, as by riveting or in any other suitable manner and to the upper surface thereof is a substantially triangular plate 48. Secured to the under face of the plate 48 and extending forwardl therefrom to a point adjacent to the anaiar member 43 is a channel member 49. ured to the forward cross bar of the frame 28 adjacent to the ends of the triangular member 48 are braces 50, such braces extending forwardl and h'avin their extreme forward on s secured to t e front end of the channel member 49. Secured to the braces 50 ad'acent to their rear ends is a bar 51 whic lies arallel with the forward cross bar of the rame 28 and above the channel member 44. The forward end of the channel member 49 is provided with a bearing plate 52 in alignment with the bearing plate 46 on the channel member 44 and in these bearing plates is fitted a bearing pin 53. The rear end of the channel member 49 is provided with a perforation 47. Numeral 55 designates a pin mounted in the rear end of the member 44 and bearing plate 54 and this pin is adapted to enter perforation 47 to hold the roller frame 28 in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the machine 10. Secured to the upper surface of the channel member 44 adjacent to the rear end thereof is a member 56 to which is secured a bearing bracket 57. Pivotally mounted in the bear-,
ing bracket 57 is a bell crank lever 58, one arm of which is pivotally attached to the upper end of the pin 55, while the other arm is pivotally attached to a reach rod 59 that extends forwardly toward the tractor unit 10, terminating adjacent to the operators position thereon so as to be within convenient reach of the o erator. The in 55 above the channel mem r 44 is provi ed with a collar against which abuts a compression spring 60, the upper end of this spring engaging with the under face of the member 54, the spring 60 therefore 'constantly urging the pin 55 downward so as to enga e in the perforation 47 when such perforatlon comes into alignment with the pin. If it is desired to allow a free movement of the roller frame 28 about the bearin pin 53, the pin 55 may be removed an the roller frame 28 therefore has a limited pivotal movement with res act to the longitudinal axis of the machlne about the pivot bearing 53, as indicated in Fig. 4. The use of the pin 55 is useful when it is desired to back the machine 10 with the roller frame 28 attached.
Assuming the ower plant 10to have been furnished with t e scarifier 26 at the front of the machine with the road scrapin tool 23 immediately to the rear thereof an with the roller elements 32 at the rear of the entire structure, it is obvious that, when propelled along the road and pro erly manipulated, the road will be scarifie and immediately after the scarified ortion will be scra ed by the blade 23, an finally the scrape portion will be rolled and put in final condition by the passage of the roller elements 32 thereover. I therefore am enabled by this apparatus to perform the operations of scarifying, scraping, and rolling on an spot in a road consecutively while, considering a piece of road as a unit, I am enabled to perform the three operations of scarifying, scraping, and rolling simultaneously.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. An improved roller for roads and the like, including, in combination, a rectangular framework, a roller mounted for rotative movement in said framework, a plurality of members pivotally attached to the front end of said framework, said members being adapted to be pivotall attached to a propelling mechanism, an means associated with themembers and with the framework for preventing too great an angular like, comprising, in combination, a rec-- tangular framework, a roller rotatably mounted therein, a pair of members pivotally attached to the forward end of the framework and adapted for attachment to a propelling mechanism, said members crossing each other at an intermediate point, and means for securing said members together at their crossing point whereby relative movement of the members with respect to the rectangular framework, or each other, is prevented.
