UNITED STATES QT'IIE I. HUSBAND; 0F THURMAN, IOWA.
MOLD FOBTHE MANUFACTURE: OF CEMENT BLOCKS.
Application filed January 26,, 1925. Serial No. 43820.
To. all whom: it may concern:
Be it known that OTIIE L. HUSBAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thurman, in the county of Fremont and State of Iowa, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds for the Manufacture of Cement Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in molds for the manufacture of cement blocks, and more particularly to a molding device in which the base portion is provided with means for forming a slot in the upper end of the resultant block.
A further object of the invention is to provide a molding box or form which may be in sections adapted for ready assembling and which 'may be of various sizes and shapes according to the character of the block desired.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application,
Figure l is a front elevation of a block formed in connection with my improved form or mold;
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the mold;
Figure 4 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 3; and
Figure 5 is a plan view of the blank used for reinforcing the block.
In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawing, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 1 represents the base of a mold upon which is supported the walls 2, which are held in position by means of an upper band or ring member 3. These walls may be secured together in any preferred manner to the base 1 and in this connection it may be stated that although I have shown this form as tapering smaller towards its lower end and rectangular in cross-section, the samemay be circular or polygonal as desired, the exact construction shown not being essential.
In constructing a mold or form of this type, I am particularly interested in producing a concrete block for use in connection with" corn cribs, barns, sheds or the like, which is provided in its upper end with a transverse slot or cavity for the reception therein of a sill or joist. In carrying out this idea, I desire to mount upon the base 1 of the mold a block 4 which extends transversely of the form and abuts firmly the two side walls, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. This block may be of any width, according to the width of the slot desired in the resultant block.
I also desire to have formed in connection with this block a reinforcement. To this end I provide a metallic strip 5, of a width substantially equal to the width of the block 4, said strip being bent inwardly adjacent its ends along lines designated as 6, so as to provide the inwardly convergent end members 7. This strip 5 is placed upon the upper face of the block with the bent ends 7 facing upwardly. When the cement is poured into the body of the device, the same will take the form enclosed by the walls of the mold and the block therein and the cement will entirely enclose therein the bent ends 7 of the reinforcement 5. After the concrete has become solid and the walls and base of the mold are removed, a block such as designated by the numeral 8 will be formed and a transverse slot 9 will be formed in the upper end thereof as a result of the positioning of the block 4 in the bottom of the mold. It will be seen that the block 8 will have embedded therein the ends of the reinforcing strip 5, said strip forming a base for the slot 9, as clearly shown .in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and eflicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention.
While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a mold of the class described, a rectangular base plate, side and end walls mounted thereon in spaced relation from the upper ends, the vertical plane of the upper" ends of'said Walls being beyond the vertical plane of the side and end edges of said base plate, a securing band applied to the outer faces of said Walls adjacent their upper ends and a transverse block mounted cen- 10 trally on said base plate having'its ends beveled coincident to and abutting the inner faces of opposed end Walls, said block be ing of a thickness equal to approximately one-third the distance between the lower ends of the side Wails, as and for the pur poses described.
In'testimony whereof I affix my signature.
'OTTIE HUSBAND.
