United States Patent The invention relates to crematory'niches and particularly to means associated with such niches for mounting and anchoring the niche facing elementsthereon.
It is' an object of the invention to provide a facing mount adapted for being embedded with improved firmness in the wall of a concrete crematory niche and for being positioned with improved accuracy and solidity. in its desired location during the pouring of the concrete forming the niche, the invention being useful for this purpose with greatly improved facility and'reduced expense.
Another object of the invention is to make possible the manufacture of a new style of high quality, low. cost concrete niche or bank of niches with the facing frames s'etvery precisely in perfect alignment with'each other jto produce anew type of perfection in overall appearance jand'wherein the frames and other facing elements may be easily and quickly'ap-plied as a final trim, the whole being accomplished at a minimum cost using conventional though high grade concrete casting techniques and adaptling such techniques for precasting of the banks of niches at plants especially equipped for their manufacture, the banks of niches being taken in completed form to the ,cremat-ory for erection.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage some of which with the foregoing will be set forth' in the following description of the preferred form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawings ac- It is to be understood; however, that variations in the showing "made by the said drawings and description may be adopted within the scope of the invention as setforth in the claims.

easily removable fasteners 21, 22, 23 and 24. In this example the fasteners 21-24 are bolts inserted into anchoring brackets 101, 102, 103, and 104 disposed at the four corners of the niche. FIGURES 3 and 4 show in more detail how the facing elements of the representative niche 15 are mounted at one representative corner ,thereof. The anchoring bracket 104 being embedded in the concrete at the corner, the glass window plate 32 is of the niche as an aid in keeping the window glass 32 aligned and for spacing the frame 33 substantially away from the wall of the niche so as not to crush the glass. Strips 36 and 37 of a soft resilient padding materiala're disposed between the frame 33, the glass 32 and the wall of the niche to give additional protection to the glass and to provide improved dust protection for the niche in resisting the inflow of dust as the parts and the air in the niche are subjected to thermal expansion and contraction.
The assembly is secured together by means ofa bolt 38 transpiercing the frame 33 outside the periphery of the window glass 32 and threaded into a bore 39 in the A preferred form of. the invention is shown in FIG- URE 5 and consists of the anchoring bracket 101 for the facing of the concrete niche 13, the bracket having a ,foot portion 26 adapted for mounting at a corner 42 of i the niche 13, the foot portion 26 being formed with cooperating facing frame positioning and fastening means 43. The bracket of the invention also has an arm 46 extending from the foot portion 26 for embedment in the wall of the niche 13.
A further preferred form of the invention is shown -in FIGURES 5 and 6, wherein the bracket comprises a plurality of foot portions 51, 52, 53 and 54 adapted for mounting at the adjacent niche corners 56, 57, 58 and 59 of a plurality of adjacent niches 13, 14, 15 and 16 in a bank 12 of niches. In this form, the bracket 102 comprises arms 61, 62, 63 and 64 extending from the foot portions 51, 52, 53 and 54 and is adapted for mounting in the concrete wall defining the adjacent niches 13, 1 4, 15 and 16. The arms 61, 62, 63 and 64 are joined at a remote end portion 67 and lie within and interlock with the concrete of the wall defining the adjacent niches 13, 14, 15 and 16'.
Each foot portion, as for example foot portion 52, further includes faces 55 and 60' which form a substantially V-shaped notch; the surfaces defining the Walls of the notch being in right angular relationship to each other and normal to the exposed surface 65. The exposed faces of each bracket, as for example face 65, are positi-oned flush withthe front faces of the respective niche corners, and the surfaces of the notches are disposed flush with a respective wall surface which defines a corner of a niche.

Where the bracket of the invention is to be applied to four niches, the bracket has four foot portions 51, 52, 53 and 54 adapted for mounting at the adjacent four corners 56, 57, 5S and 59 of the four adjacent niches 13, 14, 15 and 16; and the foot portions 51, 52, 53 and 54 are connected by four arms 61, 62, 63 and 64 in the form of a cross, joining me remote end portion 67 51, 52, 53 and 54.
V A further preferred form of the bracket is shown in FIGURES 5 and 7, wherein there are shown two foot portions 73 and 74 connected by two arms 76 and 77 joined in a remote end portion 78 substantially removed from the plane of the foot portions 73 and 74. The bracket 103 comprises an extension 79 angled for engagement with thereinforcing elements 81 at the end of the concrete wall 82 defining the niches 13 and 14; the extension 79 hearing a cross arm 87 and a cut away portion aster making the engagement.
The invention is further shown in FIGURES 2 and 5, wherein the foot portions are used in combination with a facing frame such as the representative facing frame 19 shown in FIGURE 2 as being in a position exploded away from its normal place over the niche 13. As especially shown in FIGURE 5 the foot portion 26 is adapted for embedment in the concrete wall at the corner 42 of the niche 13, and is shaped for lying flush with and defining the surfaces 47, 48 and 49 of the wall meeting at the niche corner 42. And as particularly well shown in FIGURE 2 the foot portion 26 is further shaped for underlying the facing frame 19 when the latter is in place over the niche 13, and for extending peripherally away from the niche 13 only so far as the frame 19 extends. In the preferred form of the invention, the front faces of the intersecting walls are rabbeted forming a recessed face such as face 47 for receiving a closure frame. Face 41 is flush with recessed face 47. v
The preferred forms of the invention are more particularly described as having facing-frame positioning and fastening means such as the representative means shown in FIGURE 4 comprising the threaded bore 39 aligned for engagement with the threaded bolt 38 transpiercing the representative frame 33 for securing the frame to the representative foot portion 91.
As shown in FIGURE 5 the crematory niche construc- *tion comprises a plurality of rectilinearly related concrete walls 93, 94, 95 and 96 defining niche 13, the walls having reinforcing rods such as representative rods 68, 69, 97, 98-, 99 and 100 mounted therein; and a plurality of brackets such as the representative brackets 101, 102, 103 and 104 disposed at the intersections of the walls.
As particularly shown in FIGURES 8, 9, and the invention also comprises a form for pouring the concrete bank of niches 12 comprising a rectilinear tray-shaped form-box 106 and a plurality of substantially rectilinear form-projections such as the representative projections 10?, 108, 109, 110, 111 and 112 for forming the niches, the projections being disposed projecting inwardly in the form box 106 for defining the walls of the niches when the concrete is poured. in this preferred form of the invention the brackets of the invention have foot portions such as the representative foot portions 116, 117, 118, 119, 120 and 121, particularly formed with V- notches 122, 123, 124, 125, 126 and 127 to provide perpendicularly related corner portions fitting and keying with the corners of the niche-forming projections 107, 108, 109, 110, 111 and 112. It will be noted particularly in refer ence to FIGURES 9 and 10 that the reinforcing rods are disposed in pairs in a reticulated pattern in the spaces between the niche forming projections 107-112, etc. and that the brackets, with their foot portions 116421, etc. keyed to the niche-forming projections 107-112, etc. are then wedged and braced between the projections and the reinforcing rods so as to be held quite steady and in firm position during the concrete pouring operation.
In the case of the brackets along the side and head walls of the form box 106 the wedging engagement is made between the bracket, the sides of the box, and a special bolt which is used to anchor the reinforcing rods to the form box during the pouring operation. This bolt and its associated apparatus is best shown as the representative bolt 89 of FIGURE 11. It will be noted that the reinforcing rods such as the representative rods 99 and 09 h en ged ends at the walls of the box for the insertion of the bolt 89, and are in fact joined together as by welds 128 to a helical coil 129 of suitable pitch and diameter to mate with the screw-threads of the bolt 89. The bolt 89 is thus secured to the box 106 and is threaded into the enlarged end or coil 129 for positioning and tensioning the reinforcing rods 99 and during the pouring of the concrete; and as shown in FIGURE 7 the cut away portions 88 of the brackets 103 are particularly formed for engagement with bolts such as the bolts 89. Thus after the concrete is poured and has set the bolts such as the representative bolts 89 are removed to free the walls of the box 106 and the box 106 is removed together with its interior projections 107-112, etc., leaving the coils such as the representative coil 129 and the reinforcing rods and the brackets all embedded firmly in the concrete.
I claim:
I. A corner construction for a concrete crematory niche comprising, a pair of perpendicular intersecting concrete walls having coplanar front faces and perpendicularly related surfaces defining a pair of adjacent corners of adjacent niches adjacent the area of the intersection of said walls, a metal bracket imbedded in said area, said' bracket including a pair of arms joined at a respective remote end portion, said arms diverging from said end portion and from each other, each arm including a foot portion at the opposite end thereof, the foot portions having exposed surfaces lying in a common plane and each foot portion further including a substantially V- shaped notch therein with the surfaces defining the walls of the notch being in right angular relationship to each other and normal to the exposed surface, said exposed surfaces being positioned flush with said front faces at respective niche corners and the surfaces of the notches being disposed flush with a respective wall surface which defines a corner of a niche.
2. A corner construction for a concrete crematory niche comprising, a pair of perpendicular intersecting concrete walls having coplanar front faces and perpendicularly related surfaces defining four corners of four niches adjacent the area of the intersection of said walls, a metal bracket imbedded in said area, said bracket including four arms joined at a respective remote end portion, said arms diverging from said end portion and from each other, each arm including a foot portion at the opposite end thereof, the foot portions having exposed surfaces lying in a common plane and each foot portion further including a substantially V-shaped notch therein with the surfaces defining the walls of the notch being in right angular relationship to each other and normal to the exposed surface, said exposed surfaces being positioned flush with said front faces at respective niche corners and the surfaces of the notches being disposed flush with a respective wall surface which defines a corner of a niche.
3. A compartmented concrete structure of crematory niches comprising perpendicularly related intersecting partition walls and a back wall defining a plurality of front opening niches, said intersecting walls having coplanar front faces and perpendicularly related surfaces defining a plurality of front corners, said front faces being rabbeted for forming coplanar inset faces for receiving a closure frame, a plurality of closure frames dimensioned for mounting in said rabbeted front faces and against said inset faces, a plurality of metal brackets imbedded in said walls at the areas of intersection of said partition walls, each of said brackets including a plurality of arms joined at a respective remote end portion, said arms diverging from said end portion and from each other, each arm including a foot portion at the opposite end thereof, the foot portions having exposed surfaces lying in a common plane and each foot portion further including a substantially V-shaped notch therein with the surfaces defining the walls of the notch being in right angular relationship to each other and normal to the exposed surface, said exposed surfaces being positioned flush with said inset faces at respective niche corners and the surfaces of the notches being disposed flush with a respective wall surface which defines a corner of a niche.

Claims (1)
1. A CORNER CONSTRUCTION FOR A CONCRETE CREMATORY NICHE COMPRISING, A PAIR OF PERPENDICULAR INTERSECTING CONCRETE WALLS HAVING COPLANAR FRONT FACES AND PERPENDICULARLY RELATED SURFACES DEFINING A PAIR OF ADJACENT CORNERS OF ADJACENT NICHES ADJACENT THE AREA OF THE INTERSECTION OF SAID WALLS, A METAL BRACKET IMBEDDED IN SAID AREA, SAID BRACKET INCLUDING A PAIR OF ARMS JOINED AT A RESPECTIVE REMOTE END PORTION, SAID ARMS DIVERGING FROM SAID END PORTION AND FROM EACH OTHER, EACH ARM INCLUDING A FOOT PORTION AT THE OPPOSITE END THEREOF, THE FOOT PORTIONS HAVING EXPOSED SURFACES LYING IN A COMMON PLANE AND EACH FOOT PORTION FURTHER INCLUDING A SUBSTANTIALLY VSHAPED NOTCH THEREIN WITH THE SURFACES DEFINING THE WALLS OF THE NOTCH BEING IN RIGHT ANGULAR RELATIONSHIP TO EACH OTHER AND NORMAL TO THE EXPOSED SURFACE, SAID EXPOSED SURFACES BEING POSITIONED FLUSH WITH SAID FRONT FACES AT RESPECTIVE NICHE CORNERS AND THE SURFACES OF THE NOTCHES BEING DISPOSED FLUSH WITH A RESPECTIVE WALL SURFACE WHICH DEFINES A CORNER OF A NICHE.
