DISAPPEARING-TELEPHONE TABLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gnonon Kenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Island City, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disappearing-Telephone Tables, of which the following is a specification.

The principal object of this invention is to provide a new and improved construction in a telephone table having a compartment therein to receive the telephonic transmitting and receiving apparatus and a movable platform mounted in said compartment upon which the apparatus is placed connected with a hinged top or closure in such a manner that the apparatus will disappear into the compartment when the top is closed and will be withdrawn therefrom when the top is opened.

Another object is to so provide means upon the platform to securely hold the telephone thereto and to provide a simple construction, which can be easily manipulated and which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low price.

For the accomplishment of these and such further objects as will hereinafter be 'ap parent to those skilled in the art to which this appertains, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification Fig. 1 is a front View of an improved table embodying my invention parts being shown in section.

Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, the hinged top being broken away.

Fig. 3 is a central section through the telephone receiving compartment showing the lid closed and the telephone entirely encased within the table.

Fig. 4 is'a View similar to Fig. 3 showing the lid open with the telephone withdrawn and in position for use and Fig. 5 is a detail of the top supporting means.

is provided with legs 11 and the upper or body portion comprises a cabinet having an open front compartment 12 for holding the telephone directories, and an open topped compartment 13 for enclosing the telephone, the front of which is closed by the panel 14. A hinged drop board 15 is preferably provided at the front of the table to act as retaining means for the directories and also to give a better appearance.

A framing extends around the top of the table and consists of the side boards 16 and 1? and front and rear boards 18 and 19 respectively.

Extending between the front and rear boards 18 and 19 is a strip 20 which rests upon the partition 21 which divides the telephone compartment fronithe book compartment. A panel 22 is secured upon the under faces of the side board to provide a depressed pocket for the reception of a memo pad and pencil, the panel 22 prefer ably being provided with a groove 23 to receive the pencil.

Suitably secured within and extending vertically from the top to the bottom of the compartment 13 are a pair of guide rods 2 L about which are slidably engaged the grooves 25 provided in a horizontally extending platform 26. The lower ends of connecting links 27 are pivotally secured to the central portions of the sides of the platform 26 at the base of the grooves 25, the upper ends of the links being pivotally secured to the ends of a cleat 28 secured to the under face of the hinged top or closure 29.

An articulated stop is provided to hold the top 29 in the open position shown in Fig. 4 and consists of the members 30 and 31, the outer ends of which are pivotally connected as at 32 and 33 to the top 29 and side board 16 respectively, while the inner juxtaposed ends of the members 30 and 31 are pivotally connected together as at 34:. The member 31 is slotted as at 35 to cooperate with the pin 36 and act as a stop in the manner common to devices of this character.

The side board 16 is cut away as indicated at 37 (Fig. 2) to provide a clearance for the members 30 and 31, when the top 29 is in the closed position shown in Fig. 3.

A hinged door 38 is preferably provided at the rear of the telephone compartment to permit the phone to be placed within the table, a small notch 39 being cut in the bottom of the door to permit the passage of the telephone wires 40, and a similar groove 4:1 is cut in the back edge of the platform for the same purpose.

Means are provided for securing the telephone to the movable platform and comprises the rectangular shaped cleat 42 divided into two parts along the line 43, and secured by the screws d4: to the platform. The cleat a2 is provided with an aperture 45 and its under face is cut out as at 46 to receive the base of the phone, the aperture a5 and cut out portion 46 being located to one side of the platform as clearly shown in Fig. 2 to allow for the telephone receiver.

The operation of the device is as follows, assuming the platform 26 to be in its lower position shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the rear door 38 is opened and the telephone is inserted into the compartment 18 and placed upon the platform, the front portion of the cleat l2 being removed. The top 29 is then raised causing the links 27 to raise the platform, the vertical guide rods 2 icooperating with the grooves to hold the platform in a horizontal position during its raising movement. hen the top 29 is thrown back to the position shown in Fig. @i the members 30 and 31 will move slightly past dead center, the pin 35 and slot 36 cooperating to limit the movement of the top. The pivotal connection of the links 27 will permit the platform 26 to retain its horizontal position during its vertical movements and it will be noted that as the points of connection of the links 27 are on a central line of the platform there will be no tendency of the platform to tilt and bind upon the guide rods 24.

After the platform has been raised to its upper position the front section of the cleat 42 is secured in place and the table is then in condition for continued use. To lower the telephone into its compartment the locked joint of the members 30 and 31 is broken and the top 29 swung to its closed position, the platform 26 and phone thereon disappearing into the compartment 13 and the table then presenting the appearance of an ordinary table.

It will be obvious that the shape or appearance of the table may be varied as desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A device of the character described, including a table haviru an open topped compartment, a pivotally mounted closure adapted to close the top of said compartment, a pair of vertically Xtending guide roos centrally mounted in the sides of said compartment, a horizontally extending platform having a pair of grooves therein for receiving said guide rods, pivot pins fixed to the central portions of the sides of said platform contiguous to said grooves, links pivotally connected to said pins and said closure to cause said platform to be raised out of or lowered into said compartment when said closure is moved from closed to open position or vice versa, said grooves and guide rods cooperating to hold said platform in a horizontal position during its vertical movement, and stop members pivotally connected at their outer ends to said closure and to the main frame of said table respectively, and at their inner. ends pivotally connected to each other, to stop the movement of said platform and closure when said platform is raised to the top of said compartment.
