SHOE-SHINING STAND.
Application filed June 14, 1923. Serial No. 645,268.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PASQUALE PALoM- BELLA, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Springfield, in
the county of Hainpden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Shoe-Shining Stand, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in 19 stands furnished in shoe-shining establishments for the accommodation of persons having their shoes blacked, dressed, or polished, and consists essentially of a platform and step, a chair mounted on said platform,
foot-rests supported above said step, mechanism for raising and lowering said footrests, and mechanism for moving the same forwardly and rearwardly, all as hereinafter set forth.
20 One object is to provide means for positioning the foot-rests of the stand at heights most convenient for the patrons.
A further object is to provide means for locating the foot-rests nearer to or farther from the chair, according to the lengths of the legs of the patrons. This is a feature which is especially desirable when some of the patrons are children.
Still another object is to produce equipment of the character described above which is comparatively inexpensive, simple in both construction and operation, convenient, and
withal highly practicable and eflicient.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the course of the following description.
I attain the objects and secure the advantages of my invention by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan of the foot-rest supports and the operating mechanisms therefor, with parts in section; Fig. 2, a vertical section taken on lines 77, looking in the direction of the associated arrow, in Fig. 1,
and, Fig. 3, a vertical section taken on lines 88, looking in the direction of the associated arrow, in Fig. 1.

59 Inasmuch as the platform and step may be and usually are of suficient length to accommodate more than one chair and one. pair of foot rests, only fragmentary portions of such a platform and step are shown in connection herewith. In Fig. 3 the foot-rest therein appearing is shown by broken lines in its most elevated rearward position.
The platform and step are of ordinary construction, and respectively indicated by the numerals 1 and 2.
The forward part in side. elevation of a chair is illustrated in Fig. 3 wherein a front leg is indicated by the numeral 11, and seat by the numeral 10. The chair is located on the platform 1 adacent the front edge thereof, and two footrests 41 are located above the step 2 in position to receive the feet of the person seated in said chair. Each footrest- 41 is secured t0 the top of a vertical rod 42 which extends downwardly through a slot 43 in the top of the platform 2 into a tubular holder 44. The slots 43 in the top. of the step 2 are at rightangles to the front edge of said step, and 76 there is a slot 43 in said top that extends in the same direction as do said first-named slots, but is located nearer the front side of the platform 1. Each rod 42 is provided on the backside with a rack 45, and there is a slot 46 in the corresponding side of the holder44 in which said rod is located to accommodate a gear 4'? that intermeshes with said rack. The two gears 47 are secured on a horizontal shaft 48 that is journaled in as bearings 49-49 integral with the back sides of the holders 44. Secured to the left-hand terminal of the shaft 48 is a bevel-gear 50.
A crank-shaft 51 is journaled in the front side of the step 2, and a hollow shaft 52 is journaled in a bearing 53 that extends to the left from the left-hand holder 44, and receives therein the inner terminal portion of said crank-shaft. The crank-shaft 51 and the .hollow shaft 52 are rotatably con- 98 nected, but arranged for independent longi tudinal movement, by means of longitudinal slots 54 in said hollow shaft, and a pin 55 that extends from said crank-shaft 51' into said slots. Secured to the rear terminal I of the shaft 52 is a bevel-gear 56 which intermeshes with the bevel-gear 50. The bevelgear 56 and a collar 57 secured to the shaft 52, respectively behind and in front of the bearing 53, hold said shaft against endwise movement in said bearing. Secured to the front end of the crank-shaft 51 is a crankarm 58, and also secured to said shaft between said crank-arm and the front side of the step 2 is a ratchet-wheel 59. The ratchetwheel 59 anda collar 60 secured to the crankshaft, respectively outside and inside of the front of the step 2, hold said shaft against endwise movement. A detent 61 ispivotal-ly connected at 62 with the front of the step 2, in position to engage the ratchet-wheel 59 and prevent said ratchet-wheel from rotating. in a reverse direction. The deten't 61 is ro vided with an extension or handle 63-to facilitate the disengagement by hand ofsaid detent from the ratchet-wheel 59. Each holder 4L4: is bifurcated at the bottom to receive a roll 64: Whichis mounted on a horizontal spindle 65 that is journaled in the narts'each side of the bifurcation, and there is a track 66 which extends inwardly from the front of the step 2 for said roll, the'latter being received in alongitudinal groove 67 in the topof said track.
Upon grasping the handle of the crankarm 58 and rotating the crank-shaft 51 by means of said handle to theleft, the gears l7 are rotated, through the medium of the pin 55, shaft'52, bevel-gears 56 and 50, and shaft 48 in the direction to raise or elevate the racks L5 and with said racks the rods 42 and foot-rests 4:1. Upon swinging the detent 1 out of engagement with the ratchetwheel 59, while grasping the handle of the crank-arm 58, and permitting the rotary parts and members to' revolve in opposite d1- rections, or causing them to revolve 1n such directions, the foot-rests ll are lowered. Thus the foot-rests may be easily andquickly located at any desired height, within the range of the elevatin mechanism where they are locked or secured by means of the detent 61 and intervening members. The rods 42 are moved up and down in the hold ers l simultaneously, and the height of one always corresponds with that of the other.
Extending between and secured to the front and back sides beneath the top of the step 2, and passing between the holders M, a e two" horizontal guides 68. In the outer side of each guide 68 is a T-slot 69. Extending toward each other from adjacent sides of ie holders 44: are two hubs 70, and mounted on the inner terminals of these hubs are LWO rolls-71. T he arrangement and construction of parts are such that the inner terminals of the hubs 70 extend into the narrower portions of the slots 69, and th-e rolls 7 1 are '1 the wider portions of such slots. Upper and under cross-pieces 72 rigidly connect the holders 4 1. V The foot-rest'rods- 42 are thus supported'in and carried by a rigid structure which is somewhat inthe nature of an upright carriage,- and the same is movably supported by therolls 6 1 in the grooved tracks 66' and the rolls 71 in the slotted guides 68. It follows, therefore, that a limited amount of forward and backward movement is permitted or afforded the foot-rests d1, whereby the same may be-loeated nearer to or farther from the platform 1.
Having its base pivotally connected at T3 with a floor bracket 74: is an upwardly-e2;- tending lever 75. The lever 7 5 projects through the slot slit in the step 1, and has a handle 76 above said step. An angular brace 77 has its ends secured to the crosspieces 72 intermediate of the ends of such pieces, and has its angle or elbow, which behind the vertical plane of said crosspieces, pivotally connected at 78 with the le ver 75. Upon grasping the handle 71 and swinging the lever rearwardly on its pivot 2, the brace 7'? and with it the holders l lis moved in the same direction, and, upon swinging said lever in the opposite direction, said brace with said holders moved forwardly. such times the rolls 6 1 travel in the grooves 6? and the rolls 71 travel in the slot 69; also the shaft 52 slides on the crank-shaft 51, and the rear end of the slot- 5-l approaches or moves away from the pin 55. The holders a l are moved forward and backward by means of the lever regardless of the elevation of the foot-rests ll. Without the slip connection a forded by the slots 5 and the pin 55, or equivalent provision, the holders could not, of course, be moved the manner explained.
In ord r to secure the lever 75 and with it the holders i after adjustment, 1 provide the handle 76 with an ordinary latch 7 9, and mount a perforated sector 80 on the step 2 at the left of the slot 43. The latch 79 is pivotally connected at 81 with the handle 76, and has a part that extends to the left over the sector 80 and carries a pin 82 to enter any one of the perforations in said sector. A. spring 83 is interposed between the lever handle and the latch handle normally to retain the pin 82 in lockingengagement with the sector 80. By forcing the handl of the latch a inst the resiliency of the spring 88 toward the handle 76, said latch is r clzed on its pivot 81 in a manner to withdraw the pin 82 from engagement with the sector 80, and then the lever 75 can be swung either forwardly or rearwardly.
After such movement the latch 79 is released and permitted to reengage with its pin 82 the sector 80.
More or less change in the shape, size. construction, and arrangement of some or all of the parts of this shoe-shining stand may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or exceeding the scope of what is claimed.
What I'claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a shoe-shining stand, with supporting means, and approx imately vertical hollow holders arranged to move ho izontally on said supporting means, of rods in said holders, foot-rests mounted on said rods, means to raise and lower sa d rods in said holders, and means to move said holders on said supporting means.
2. The combination, in a shoe-shining stand, with hollow slotted holders, supportin: means for said holders, the latter being movable in a horizontal plane on said means, a shaft supported from said holders, gears on said shaft and extending into the slots in said holders, and means to rotate said shaft, of rods slidingly arranged in said holders and provided with racks to intermesh with said gears, and foot-rests mounted on said rods.
3. The combination, in a shoe-shining stand, with hollow slotted holders, supporting means for said holders, the latter being movable in a horizontal plane on said means, a shaft supported from said holders, gears on said shaft and extending into the slots in said holders, and means to rotate said shaft, of rods slidingly arranged in said holders and provided with racks to intermesh with said gears, foot-rests mounted on said rods, a crank-shaft, and driving means between said crank-shaft and said first-named means.
4. The combination, in a shoe-shining stand, with hollow slotted holders, provided with bottom rolls, track supports for said rolls, a shaft supported from said holders. gears on said shaft and extending into the slots in said holders, and means to rot-ate said shaft, of rods slidingly arranged in said holders and provided with racks to intermesh with said gears, foot-rests mounted on said rods, a crank-shaft, and driving means between said crank-shaft and said firstnamed means.
5. In a shoe-shining stand, a pair of footrests, approximately vertical movable supaorting means for said foot-rests, tracks beneath said supporting means and upon which said supporting means are adapted to move, connecting means between said supporting means, and lateral guiding means for said supporting means.
6. In a shoe-shining stand, a pair of foot rests, supporting means for said foot-rests, tracks beneath said supporting means, crosspieces rigidly connecting said supporting means, and guides between which said supporting means are adapted to move, the latter being provided with members to engage said guides.
7. The combination, in a shoe-shining stand, with a pair of foot-rests, approx imately vertical movable supporting means for said foot-rests, tracks beneath said means, and guiding means for said supporting means, of a pivotally-mounted lever, and
a pivotal connection between said supporting means and said lever, whereby said supporting means with said foot-rests may be moved on said tracks.
8. The combination, in a shoe-shining stand, with a pair of foot-rest, approximately vertical movable supporting means for said foot-rests, tracks beneath said means, cross-pieces rigidly connecting said supporting means, and means above said tracks to guide said supporting means thereon, of a pivotally-mounted lever; and a pivotal connection between said lever and said cross-pieces, whereby said supporting means with said foot-rests may be moved on said tracks.
9. The combination, in a shoe-shining stand, with hollow slotted holders, supporting means for said holders, a shaft supported from said holders, gears mounted on said shaft and extending through the slots in said holders, a crank-shaft journaled at right-angles to said first-named shaft, a shaft supported from one of said holders, also at right-angles to said first-named shaft, means to drive said first-named shaft from said last-named shaft, interengaging means between said crank-shaft and said lastnamed shaft which permits independent longitudinal movement to said last-named shaft withoutdisconnection rotatively from said crank-shaft, rods slidingly arranged in said holders and provided with racks to intermesh with said gears, and foot-rests mounted on said rods, of a pivotally-mounted lever, and connecting means betwen said holders and said lever whereby the former may be moved by and with the latter.
10. The combination, in a shoe-shining stand, with hollow slotted holders, supporting means for said holders, a shaft supported from said holders, gears mounted on said shaft and extending through the slots in said holders, a crank-shaft journaled at right-angles to said first-named shaft, a shaft supported from one of said holders also at right-angles to said first-named shaft, means to drive said first-named shaft from said lastnamed shaft, interengaging means between said crank-shaft and said last-named shaft which permits independent longitudinal movement to said last-named shaft without disconnection rotatively from said crank-shaft, rods slidingly arranged in said. holders and provided with racks to intermesh with said gears, and foot-rests mounted on said rods, of a pivot-ally-mounted lever, connecting means between said holders and said lever whereby the former may be moved by and with the latter, and locking means for said lever.
