T. PLANTS VALVE GRINDING- TIP Original Filed Oct. 5, 1922 7 Plants Patented Dec. 29, 1925.
UNETED S'iATiiltd PAJEEENT THEODORE PLANTS, 0F LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS. ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO RALPH KLYDE SADLEB, 9F LITTLE 300K, ABKAN$AS.
VALVE-GRIHDING TIP.
Application filed October 3, 1922, Serial No. 592,078.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that THEODORE PLANTS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Grinding Tips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to valve grinding tips and its principal object is to provide a valve grinding tool having adjustable valve engaging points to permit the device to be used for grinding valves provided with valve grinding tool receiving openings arranged at various distances apart.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a valve grinding tip having a plurality of pairs of valve engaging points any pair of which may be arranged in operative position to engage the valves and which at the same time are adjustable toward and away from each other to adapt themselves to valves of various diameters.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character wherein the valve engaging elements are adjustable and when in adjusted position will be positively held against movement.
The invention also contemplates the uni versal device of this character which will be a cheap and durable construction, may be quickly and readily operated to bring the valve engaging points into operative position.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, constructions and arrangement of parts and operation to be hereinafter specifically referred to. claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where Figure 1 is a side elevation of the valve grinding tips constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective of one of the valve engaging point-s;
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the invent-ion.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated and wherein corresponding characters of reference denote cor responding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates a threaded Renewed November 23, 1925.
shank and carried thereby at its longitudinal center and extending at right angles thereto is a handle 6. Collars '4' having internal screw threads 8 are adj ustably mounted or threaded on the shank 5 and are adapted to be adjusted toward and away from each other to coincide to the distance of the valve tool openings. Formed with the collar 7 are pins 9 or valve engaging points. Also formed with the collars 7 at the points diametrically opposite the points 9 are blades 10 to be received in valves having notches or slots for the reception of the valve engaging tool. As shown in Fig. 2 these blades 10 are arranged in opposed relation and extend beyond the inner edge of the collars and toward each other. As shown in Figure 1 the pins or valve engaging ele ments 9 are in operative position but when it is desired to bring blades 10 in operative position, the collars are rotated to dispose the blades at a point on the threaded shank 5 which is diametrically opposite the handle 6. When it is desired to adjust the valve engaging points or blades to register with the valve tool receiving opening in the valve (not shown) the collars are threaded toward or away from each other as the case may be.
Longitudinal grooves 11 are provided in the shafts to the shank 5 and are located at diametrically opposite points and are adapted to receive the ends of set screws 12 carried by these collars whereby the collars are retained against accidental rotation.
From my improved device it will be seen that either sets of valve engaging members may be brought into operative position or that they may be adjusted toward or away from each other to adapt themselves to openings in the valves arranged at various distances apart.
Furthermore, the device may be manufactured and sold at substantially the same cost as an ordinary valve grinding tool and will be found practical by those engaged in grinding valves of different engines.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and enicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and while I have particularly described the means best adapted to perform the functions set forth, various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted-to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described the invention What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising a threaded element, collars threaded thereon and adjustable toward and away from each other, and pairs of valve engaging elements carried by the collars any pair of which capable of being arranged in operative position, and a handle carried by the threaded member.
2. A. device of the character described comprising a threaded member, a handle extending at right angles thereto, collars threaded on the threaded member, pairs of valve engaging elements carried by the collars any pair of Whichbeing adapted to be arranged in operative position, and elements carried by the collars for locking the latter against accidental rotation.
8. A device of the character described comprising a threaded shaft, a handle extending at right angles thereto, collars threaded on the shank upon opposite sides of the handle, pairs of valve engaging elements carried thereby any pair of Which being capable of being arranged in operative position, a shank being providedwith longitudinal grooves at diametrically opposite points, set screws carried by the collars and engageable in the grooves to prevent the collars from accidental rotation In testimony whereof I ai'iix my signature.
