J. w. BLACK DEVICE FOR OPERATING OIL GAUGES Filed Tan. 19, 1924 Patented Dec. 29, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOE W. BLACK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR OPERATING OIL GAUGES.
Application filed January 19, 1924. Serial No. 687,380.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jon IV. BLAoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Operating Oil Gauges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for operating oil gauges and the like and is particularly adapted to be used on Chevrolet cars.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a device of the class described which will provide an easy means for operating the crank-case petcocks and one which will be strong and efficient in operation and relativelly inexpensive to manufacture and instal This and other objects are accomplished by the invention in which:
.Figure 1 is a partial end elevation of a crank-case showing my device applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the petcocks on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a developed view of one of the blanks which is bent up to form one of the operating levers.
The device as illustrated is shown in connection with the crank-case 10 of a Chevrolet car having abreather pipe 11 and petcocks 12 and 18 which serve as high and low level oil gauges respectively. As these are now placed in Chevrolet cars they are very inaccessible and this invention is intended to rend-er their operation easy and certain. This is particularly necessary as the oil level must be tested at frequent intervals to be certain that it does not fall below a predetermined amount.
Each petcock 12 and 13 has a tapered plug 14 rotatably fitted within a correspondingly tapered seat and held therein by means of a spring 15. The plugs 14 are provided with laterally extending tongues 16 by which they are turned. I have provided a sheet metal member 17 which has cars 18 and 19 which are bendable about the tongues 16 so that they are rigidly secured thereon.
Each member 17 has a hole 20 therein which is adapted to receive an operating rod 21. This rod passes up along the side of the crank-case and is slidably mounted in a bracket 22 which is secured to the breather pipe 11. A knob 23 is secured to the upper end of this rod by means of a pin 24. A spring 25 bears against the bracket 22 and against a washer 26 which is secured on the rod 21 by means of a pin 27,
When the operator desires to test the level of oil in the crank-case 10 he pulls up on the knob 23 thereby opening both p- etcocks 12 and 13. He is able to judge oithe level of the oil in the crank-case from the way oil flows from these petcocks. Stop fingers 28 are made an integral part of the member 17 so that as the plugs 14 are turned to open position these stops will strike the side of the crank-case at the open position of the petcocks.
On releasing the knob 23 the spring 25 forces the plugs of the petcocks to closed position.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes therefore in the construction and arrangement may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claim, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
I claim:
A device for operating two crank-case petcocks having substantially parallel rotatable plugs, said device comprising a rod, arms hingedly connected thereto, each arm being adapted to be secured to a rotatable plug of a petcock, a guide for the free end of said rod, and means for normally holding said plugs in closed position, said rod having two transverse sections at ditterent levels for operating said arms.
