WEFT-CAREIER SUPPORT AND RELEASING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Err. H. RYoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at l Valtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful VVeft-Carrier Support and Releasing Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a weft replenishing loom and particularly to improved devices for supporting and thereafter releasing a weft carrier in transfer position therein.
In the prior patent to E. H. Ryon, No. 1,366,950, dated February 1, 1921, there is disclosed a weft carrier support engaging the butt of a weft carrier in transfer position and movable rearwardly to release the weft carrier as required.
It is the object of my present invention to provide a weft carrier butt support, such for instance as is shown in the Ryon patent, with a supplementary device associated therewith and engaging the weft carrier at a point intermediate its ends, leaving the weft carrier free and clear upon its rear side in the tip portion thereof. l/Vith this construction, the possibility of entangling or breaking the weft end during and after transfer is much reduced.
In the preferred form, the additional supporting device is secured in fixed relation to the lever or arm which supports the butt of the weft carrier and is movable to and from operative position therewith.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of a weft carrier magazine embodying our improvements, the section being taken along the line 1-1 in Fig. 2;

Referring to the drawings, I have shown portions of a weft replenishing magazine of the stationary multi-color type and comprising a stand or frame 10, an end frame simultaneously Serial No. 616,465.
11 mounted on cross rods 12 fixed in the frame 10, a transferrer 13 and an end holder 14 all of the usual commercial type. The weft carriers are supported in vertical compartments 15 and are selectively released therefrom by mechanism (not shown) upon indication of substantial weft GKlldllSiiOl'l in the active shuttle.
The released weft carrier ll moves by gravity to the position indicated in Fig. l, at which point it is supported upon the front side by a fixed guiding member 16 engaging the butt and by a yielding support; 17 engaging the tip thereof. On its rear side the butt of the bobbin is supported by a releasing member 18 having a relatively broad flat engaging surface 19 (Fig. 3). The lever 18 is pivoted at 20 to the lower end of an arm 21 which in turn is mounted upon one of the fixed cross rods 12. The lever 18 is extended rearward and upward beyond its pivot, as indicated at 13, and is provided with a stud 22 extending into a slot 23 in the lower end of an arm 24 mounted on a fixed pivot 25. A set screw 26 in the arm 24: may be used to adjustably limit the lost motion of the stud 22 in the slot 23.
A tension spring 27 connects a rearwardly extending projection 28 of the arm 21 to the part 18 of the lever 18 and normally maintains the stud 22 in engagement with the adjusting screw 24. A coil spring 29 on the cross rod 12 yieldingly swings the arm 21 forward, such movement being limited by a stop screw 30 (Fig. 1).
The lower end of the arm 21 is provided with a surface 31 positioned for engagement by a stud 32 in an arm 33 which is connected by an arm 34 (Fig. 3) and a rod 35 (Fig. 2) to an arm 36 on a cross shaft 37 forming part of the indicating mechanism of the magazine. Through these connections the stud 32 is moved upward after a transfer has been completed or revoked, thereby withdrawing the supporting lever 18 and releasing the weft carrier W unless it has been already transferred.
For a more complete description and operation of the parts thus far described, reference is made to the patent to Ryon No. 1,366,950 previously mentioned, and also to the patent to Lauzon No. 1,261,563, issued April 2,- 1918.-
In carrying out my present invention, I provide the supporting and releasing lever 18 with a laterally projecting hub or sleeve 4.0 (Fig 2 and 3) in which bent rod or arm 41 adjustably secured by one or more set screws (Fig. l). The rod 421 may thus be adjusted either angularly or longitudinally of the sleeve 4:0 and when secured in adjusted position forms a fixed part of the supporting and release lever 18 and moves simultaneously therewith. The rod 4-1 engages the weft carrier W at a point intermediate its ends and preferably substantially at the center of its length.
This brings the points of support at opposite sides of the longitudinal center of gravity of the weft carrier which is between the center of length and the butt of the weft carrier due to the excess weight of the heavy butt or head.
With the weft carrier thus supported, it will be seen that the tip portion of the weft carrier is entirely free and unobstructed on the rear side thereof, so that the weft ends may be led freely to the end holder 14 and that the weft may be easily drawn off of the weft carrier as it is inserted in the active shuttle and moves rearward away from the yielding support 17. Furthermore, I have accomplished this extremely desirable result by the addition of the single rod 41 adjustably fixed to the lever 18 and without including any relatively moving parts in addition to those already employed in releasing the butt of the weft carrier.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, 1 do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is 1. In a weft replenishing loom, a weft carrier magazine and means to support a weft carrier in transfer position therein and to release said weft carrier from such position, said supporting means comprising devices engaging said weft carrier at separated points on the rear sidethereof removed from the tip portion, and means additional to the weft carrier to move said devices positively and simultaneously rearward from supporting position.

In a weft replenishing loom, a weft carrier magazine and means to support a weft carrier in transfer position therein and to release said weft carrier from such position, said supporting means comprising a single yieldingly mounted structure engaging said weft carrier on the rear side thereof at two 'eparated points both removed from the tip portion of said carrier and on opposite sides of the longitudinal center of gravity thereof.
3. In a weft replenishing loom, a weft car rier magazine and means to support a weft carrier in transfer position therein and to release said weft carrier from such position, said means comprising devices movable in fixed relation and. engaging said weft carrier only at the butt of the weft carrier and at a point substantially spaced from both the butt and the tip of the weft carrier, and said devices forming; the entire support for said weft carrier on the rear side thereof.

In a weft replenishing loom, a weft car= rier magazine. and means to support a weft carrier in transfer position therein and to release said weft carrier from such position, said supporting means comprising a lever engaging said weft carrier at the butt thereof and a laterally projecting arm adjustably secured to said lever and movable therewith and engaging said weft carrier near the center of its length.
6. In a weft replenishing loom, a weft carrier magazine and means to support a weft carrier in transfer position therein and to release said weft carrier from such position. said means comprising a member engaging the butt of the weft carrier at the rear side thereof and an additional support ing device mounted on said member and both. angularlv and longitudinally adjustable relative thereto, said additional device engaging said weft carrier on its rear side at a point removed from the tip portion thereof.
