NIELs yCHRISTIAN sonnnsnn, or CHIQAGQYILLINOIS.
BRUSH.
Appiicanon niet August 22, i923. seriai No. 658,677.
To all whom it may concern.'
ABe it known that I, NrELsCi-IRISTIAN So-r nnNsnN, a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of i Cook and State of Illinois, have invented` certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
invention relates to brushes, and more particularly to steelnwire brushes, particularly adapted for mechanics for use in machine shops, welding shops, etc., for cleaning parts to be welded, soldered, or the like, and which is especially adapted for use with articles which are hot.
One of the objects of the invention is to construct the brush entirely of metal, so that it will not be damaged by heat. Another object is to arrange the parts so that the brush can be quickly and cheaply constructed with a simple die operation; and a further object is to provide such a brush which is very durable in use and in which the bristles are firmly and positively held in position.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. rillhe invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described aiid claimed.
The invention will be best understood by,
reference to the accompanying drawin s forming a part of this specification, and in which*- Fig. 1 is an elevational view of my brush;
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the head portion of the brush;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on line H of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a detail of the blank or pattern from which the brush head is formed, and
Figs. 6 and 7 are respectively, a sectional and an inverted plan view showing the various parts placed ready in position for the dies to force said parts together into finished shape.
The form of my invention illustrated in the drawings comprises -a brush provided with a rounded handle 10 and a troughshaped head 11 integral therewith, and constructed from a blank or pattern of sheet metal. Teeth 12 are formed at the side edges of the head providing indentations 13 therebetween, said teeth having rounded tips, as best shown in Fig. 5, to facilitate making the die used for cutting the pattern.
An integral tongue 14 extends from the outer end of saidhead.
In the finished brush, bristles l5, which are preferably made of steel-wire, are clamped between the-inner sideof head 11 and a curved bar 16 which extends the length of said head and is lirmlyretainedin positionk therein by the inwardly bent teeth 12 assisted by the inwardly bent tongue 14, said curved bar, teeth and tongue being so firmly forced downward that the intermediatepor'- tions of the bristles are considerablyv compressed together and rmly held inl position thereby. f
In making thebrush the pattern or blank is cut out making the'liandle and head in,- tegral and providing equally spaced teeth 12 at the side edges and a tongue 14 at the free end of head 11. This patternv or blank,
including the teeth and the tongue as well as the other parts, is then bent upwards substantially in trough formation, as indicated in Figs..6 and .7; and the bristles are then placed across tbe head. 11l being equally spaced by teeth 12, and the bar 16 is laid over the bristles, as shown in said Figs. 6 and 7. r[he device is thereafter subjected to asingle die press operation whereby the bar 16 is bent downwardly with the intermediate portionsV of the bristles 15v compressing said bristles firmly together and clamping them between said bar and the inner sideof head 11, and during said die press operation the ytongue 14 and the teeth 12 have been forced inwardly and firmly clamped over the edges of bar 16, providing the finished brush in the manner shown in Figs. l to 4, inclusive, with the handle rounded and the bristles eX-` tending upwardly and being substantially evenly distributed at their outer ends.
It is apparent from thepabove that this brush can be easily and cheaply constructed, and being entirely of metal provides a particularly useful and desirable brush for mechanics in machine shops and for cleaning heated parts of machines or any article.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carryingV my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without depart' ing from the spiritl of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but f desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described Vmy invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A brush having a metalhead with an integral handle at one end and with projections at the side edges, metal bristles mounted between said projections, a member mounted over said bristlesy to hold them firmly in position, said projections being bent inward over said member, and inea-ns at the outer end ofv said head clamped over said member to assist said projections to hold said member and bristles firmly in position.
being trough-shaped in cross section, steelwire bristles mounted in said head, a Curved bar mounted over said bristles to hold them firmly in position, teeth on the side edges of said head to space said bristles and to clamp said bar thereover, and a tongue at the end ofsaid head bent inwardly over said bar.
ln testimony whereof have signed my name to this specification.
