DOUBLE-DRUM HOIST.
Application filed July 31, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED M. SLATER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Double-Drum Hoist, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to double drum hoists, but more particularly to a hoist of the type in which two drums are automatically and alternately connected to be driven from a drum shaft, in accordance with the direction of rotation of the shaft.
The objects of the invention are to enable one drum or the other to be automatically connected to the drum shaft by manipulation of the hand operated controlling device of the reversible motor driving the shaft, and secure this automatic operation by means of suitable clutches, one for each drum, actuated by means under the control of said hand operated motor controlling device.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear and to these ends the in vention is shown in one of its preferred forms in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation partly in transverse section on the line 11 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional side elevation of the hoist, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional elevation of the motor throttle taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the base A of the machine is provided with the side frames B in which the shaft C is carried, over which is placed the drum shaft D on which the drums E and F are rotatably mounted. Between the drums is conveniently located a worm gear G meshing with a worm shaft H connected to any suitable motor preferably a reversible motor-J as by means of the gears K and L. In this instance, the motor J is fluid actuated and the pressure fluid is supplied through the supply pipe 0 to the inlet P of the throttle valve casing Q, in which is shown the reversing throttle valve R indicated in Fig ure 3 controlled by the handle S.-

Each drum is provided with separate clutch mechanism for connecting the drums alternately to the drum shaft D and in this instance, each clutch mechanism is in the form of a clutch band T and U which bands are automatically and alternately operated by the individual pressure fluid pistons V and in the cylinders X and Y in accordance with the direction of rotation of the motor J. For this purpose, the cylinders X and Y are preferably connected by suitable passages a and b with the valve chamber 0 in the valve chest Q, so that manipul tion of the throttle lever Sand valve R controls both the supply and exhaust of motivefluid to the motor J and the pressure fluid connections to the controlling cylinders X and Y respectively of the clutch mechanism.
The throttle valve R is provided with a rack (Z meshing with a segment 6 rocked by the throttle handle S to move the valve longitudinally, and springs f and g at each end of the valve tend to center the valve and return it to central or neutral position when the lever S is released. With the position of the valve shown in Figure 3 pressure fluid entering at the inlet 1? passes through the valve and through the supply passage h to the motor for driving the motor in one direction. i 'ressure fluid also passes through the valve apertures j to the passage b and from thence to the controlling cylinder Y to actuate the piston W upwardly. By reversing the position of the throttle lever S pressure fluid is admitted through the supply passage k to the motor to operate the motor in the opposite direction and the fluid is also supplied through the valve ports -0 to the passage a leading to the controlling cylinder X for actuating the piston V.
Any suitable connection may be provided between the pistons rods p and g and the clutch bands T and U for tightening and loosening said bands and a convenient form of mechanism is that shown in the drawings in which yokes r are pivoted at s on the bracket t of the frame and arms u extending from said yokes are pivoted to the piston rods p and g respectively. These yokes, as shown, are suitably connected by the forks o to the pins to formed on the rings a: which encircle the grooved shoes or sleeves 3 slidable upon the tubular hub portions .2 of the brackets or frames 2 keyed to the drum shaft by means of the keys 3. Links 5 are pivoted at (3 to the slidable shoe ;a one end and pivotally connected at T at the other end to the arms 8 of the bell crank levers 9 which levers are pivoted at 10 to the arms 11 of the brackets 2. The other arms 12 of the bell crank levers i) are connected to ends of the clutch bands T and U, the opposite ends of the clutch bancs being secured to the outer ends 1% of the arms ll of the brackets 2. The brackets 2 rotate with the drum shaft D and carry with them in their rotative movement the parts connected thereto including the clutch bands, the links and levers and the shoes The rings at remain stationary but may be moved longitudinally Within the shoes 2 to tighten and loosen the clutch bands through the link and lever devices in accordance with the operation of the controlling: pistons V and in the operation of the device, let it be assumed that the throttle lever S has been moved in the position indicated in Figure 3 in which ass pressure lluid is admitted to the motor through the passage 71, in the valve chest to drive the motor in one direction and pressure fluid is also admitted through the supply passage Z) to the cylinder Y which actuates the piston Vv in the cylinder and rocks the yokes r at that end of the hoist in a direction to carry the ring 03 inwardly and force the link 5 inwardly, thus rocking the bell crank lever to Which the link 5 is connected in a direction to tighten the clutch band U and thus connect the drum l to rotate With the drum shaft D While the drum E remains loose on the drum shaft. By rocking the throttle lever S in the opposite direction, the supply con neetions of the motor and the controlling cylinders reversed and the piston W releases the clutch band U while the piston V is actuated in its cylinder X and the mechanism connected to said piston in order to tighten the clutch band T and connect the drum E to the drum shaft While the drum F remains loose on the shaft.
I claim:
1. In a double drum hoist, the combination of a drum shaft, tWo drums rotatable relatively to said shaft, a reversible motor operatively connected to drive said shaft, separate clutches for the drums, a hand operated controlling device for the motor, and indivilual means controlled by said hand operated controlling device for alternately actuating said clutches to automatically connect one drum or the other to the drum shaft in accordance with the direction of rotation of the motor.
2. In a double drum hoist, the combina tion of a drum shaft, two drums rotatable relatively to said shaft, a reversible motor operativcl r connected to drive said shaft, clutch bands for the drums, at hand operated controlling device for the motor, and. individual means controlled by said hand operated controlling device for alternately actuating said clutch bands to automatically connect one drum or the other to the drum shaft in accordance with the direction of rotation of the motor.
In a double drum hoist, the combination of a drum shaft, two drums rotatable relatively to said shaft, a reversible fluid actuated motor operatively connected to drive said shaft, separate clutches for the drums, a hand operated controlling devic, for the motor, and individual fluid actuated controlled by said hand operated ingdev'ce for alternately actuating clutch s to automaticall connect one drum or the other to the drum shaft in accordance with the direction of rotation of the motor.
4. In a double drum hoist, the con'ibination of a drum shaft, tw drums rotatable relativel to said shaft, a reversible fluid actuated motor operatively connected between the drums to drive said shaft, separate clutches for the drums at the outer ends of the drums, a reversing;- throttle for the motor, and individual fluid actuated means controlled by said throttle for alternately actuating said clutches to automatically connect one drum or the other to the drum shaft in accordance with the direction of rotation of the motor.
