TOY HAND CAR.
Application filed April 4, 1925- Serial No. 20,592.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOHN N. PRISK,'L citi zen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Hand Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a toy hand car for the use of children either in or out of doors.
One objectof the invention is to provide a toy vehicle in imitation of a railway hand car, which may be ridden upon and driven by children, and which may be used either out on the side walks or indoors, as desired.
Another object is to provide a toy vehicle of the kind mentioned, having both sled runners, and detachable wheels and driving gear, so that the wheels may be removed and the device used as a sled in the winter time.

The invention includes a sled-like body 1, having the sled runners 2 and top plate 3, with slots 4 cut therethrough at each end, longitudinally upon the medial line of the plate. Eccentric shafts 5 are journaled through the ends of the structure immediately below the slots 4, and wheels 6 are detaehably mounted at the ends of these shafts and serve normally to elevate the sled runners slightly above the surface of the floor or ground. Sprocket wheels 7 are rigidly mounted upon the shafts 5, in longitudinal alignment at the sides of these eccentrics or cranks 8, and are joined by a sprocket chain 9. Two spaced uprights 10 are rigidly mounted at the center of the top plate 3, and arepierced from top to bottom with a plurality of transversely aligned bolt holes 11. A walking beam 12 is adjustably ivoted between these uprights, by means of the bolt 13 passed through any pair of the holes 11 and through the center of the beam. The ends of this beam 12 are slotted out as shown at 14 and a number of aligned bolt holes 15 are pierced transversely through these slot'ed' ends. Connecting bars 16 are provided, each having a plurality of bolt holes 17 cut therein. These bars are passed through the slots 4, and have their lower ends journaled upon the cranks 8, while their upper ends are passed through the slots 1 L, where they are adjustably secured by means of bolts 18 passed through the holes 15 and 17. Thus the beam 12 may be readily adjusted to any required vertical height, and the upper ends of the bars 16 may be adjusted and set inwardly or outwardly, so as to afford the required leverage for the walking beam 12. Handles 19 are passed transversely through the ends of the beam 12. A caster steering wheel 20 is mounted at the back of the body 1, the stem 21 of the caster being. extended up through the body and having a laterally directed arm 22 rigidly secured to the top end of the stem. A bracket 23 is mounted upon the plate 3 forwardly of the caster wheel, and the steering lever 24: is pivoted at 25 thereto. A connecting bar'26 is pivotally secured at its ends by pins 27 and 28, to the lower end of the lever 21 and the outer end of the arm 22. Thus the toy may be readily steered by manipulation of the lever 24. A brake axle 29 is journaled at 30 through the body, and brake shoes 31 and 32 are rigidly fastened thereto and adapted to bear upon the hind wheels; leverage for this purpose being afforded by a brake handle 33 extended upwardly from one of the shoes.
As stated, this toy may be used either in the summer time with the wheels attached, or in the winter time with the wheels removed, and while I have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not depart ing from the spirit of my invention, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A device of the kind described, comprising a sled-like body portion having slots out at the ends of the top thereof; crank shafts journaled through the body below the slots; wheels detaehably mounted at the ends of the crank shafts; aligned sprockets on the crank shafts at the sides of the cranks; a sprocket chain connecting the said sprocket wheels; spaced uprights at the center of the top, the same having transversely aligned bolt holes; a walking beam pivotally and adjustably mounted between the said uprights by means of a bolt passed through the center of the beam and through a pair of the bolt holes 0:: the uprights, the sand Welkmg beam being slotted at its ends and having transversely aligned bolt holes through these 5 ends; connecting bars having a plurality of bolt holes cut therein, the said bars being passed through the body slots and ournal-led at their lower ends to the cranks ot the crank slmt'ts and being pivotally and adjustably secured in the slotted ends of the Walking beam by means of bolts passed through the bolt holes of the connecting bars and of the ends of the Walking beam.
