To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY DUNKLEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Dunlrambulator forks, Jamaica Row, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Perambulators or Baby Carriages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to perambulators, toy motors or toy cycles, and has for its primary object to provide means whereby one or more persons in charge of a perambulater or vehicle provided with power means for propulsion, shall be able to ride with the vehicle.
According to one feature of the present invention, 1 provide for use in combination with a power driven perambulator or toy motor, a platform seat or the like whereby the person or persons in charge of the perambulator may ride therewith.
My invention may be carried into effect by providing a platform having one or more road wheels and having a connection whereby it may be secured to some suitable part of the perambulator.
My invention may also be carried out by providing at a suitable position upon the under frame of the perambulator either a stationary or movable platform or seat adapted to project either in front, behind, or to either side of the vehicle.
My invention may further be carried out by providing a frame attached or adapted to be attzurhed beneath the perainbulator, the said frame having means for supporting one or more passengers and having its own road wheel or road wheels. Such a frame may if required also carry a power unit for driving one or more of the road wheels.

In the construction illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the invention is shown as applied to an ordinary perambulator having axles 1 which carry springs 2 upon which is sus pended a body 8. A power unit 1 is shown consisting of a small internal combustion engine driving its own road wheel 5 from which the tractive eifort is derived. It will be understood that the unit 4:, 5, may be located either as shown under about the centre of the perambulator or it may be in advance or to the rear of the perambulator, and if required it may be in alignment with one of the road wheels of the perambulator.
To enable the person or persons in charge of the perambulator to ride therewith, I provide a platform 6 supported upon a forked frame 7 having a connection 8 which includes two pivoted joints 9 and 10 allowing of practically a universal movement between the frame 7 and the under frame of the perambulator. The connection 8 is shown secured by a clip 11 to the rear axle of the perambulator but it can be secured in any other suitable manner.
The frame 7 is provided in the construction illustrated with a single road wheel 12 covered with a shield 13 as shown.
Figures 1 and 2 show perhaps the simplest method of carrying out my invention as ap plied to an ordinary perambulator, it being understood that the engine 4 receives its fuel from a tank such as 14; mounted on the under frame of the perambulator and that the controls for the engine are brought by means of Bowdcn or other cables tothe handle 15 of the perambulator. This perambulator can be steered in the usual way by an operator standing upon the platform 6.
In Figures 3 and 4 a modified construction is shown wherein the power unit 16 is arranged centrally but behind the perambulator. In this case the power unit has its own road wheel 17 and it is connected to the rear axle 18 of the perambulator by means of a frame 19. This connection is laterally rigid but the frame 19 can turn on this axle 18 so that the weight of the power unit can act downwardly upon the road wheel 17, so that for steering the perambulator it is desirable to provide means for turning the front wheels. Such means have been indicated in Figures 3 and 4 and consist in pivoting the ends 20 of the front axle and providing levers 21 connected by a link 22 which can be operated by means of a lever 23 having a handle 24: arranged in a suitable position for operation by the person in charge of the perambulator upon the platform 25.
The platform 25 is provided for the purpose of allowing the person in charge of the perambulator to ride therewith.
The platform 25 is mounted on a frame 26 which is slidably mounted upon the axles 18 and 27 the arrangement being such that when the platform 25 is not required for use it can be pushed inwardly together with its frame 26.
Another arrangement is shown in Figure 5 wherein the power unit 28 is arranged under the perambulator and provided with its own road wheel 29. In this case for the accommodation of a passenger I provide a platform 30 which is carried by brackets 31 secured to the rear axle 32 and front axle 33.
In this construction means must be provided for turning one or more of the road wheels of the perambulator for steering purposes and at one side of the body of theperambulator I therefore provide a steering column 34.- having steering mechanism 35 at its lower end similar to that employed in a motor car.
In the construction shown in Figure 6 the power unit 48 is shown as mounted upon the under frame 49 of the perambulator. This power unit 48 drives a shaft 50 which carries a driving disc 51 gearing with a driving rim 52 which may be of V or any other section mounted on one of the road wheels 58 of the perambulator. The arrangement is such that the driving disc 51 either engages with the rim 52 by reason of its own weight or it may be pressed into contact therewith to give a driving engagement by means of a spring. If a spring is employed the driving disc 51 instead of being mounted on the first motion shaft may be mounted on a shaft carried by a pivoted arm and the spring may act upon this pivoted arm so as to tend to force the driving disc into contact with the rim. The driving disc instead of acting upon a separate driving rim may act upon the road wheel or its tyre.
In the construction shown in Figure 7 the child carrying body is shown at and is mounted in the usual way upon springs 66. A platform 67 is provided for carrying the adult this platform being universally jointed to the under frame of the perambulator at 68. The platform carries the power unit 69 which drives the driving wheel 70 by means of a transmission shaft 71.
In the construction shown in Figure 8 two platforms and 81 are provided. The platform 81 serves to support the power unit 82 whilst the platform 80 is for the adult. The child carrying body is omitted from the drawing for the sake of clearness but is supported on the springs 83 in the usual way. Adjacent to the platform 80 steering gear 84 is provided.
In the arrangement shown in Figure 9 a frame 85 is provided which carries two foot boards 86 for supporting an adult.
The frame 85 also carries a power unit 87 which is pivoted or universally jointed at S8. The power unit 87 drives a driving wheel 89 having a central recess 90 which allows it to be normally clear of the pcriphery of the driving road wheel 91. The frame which carries the power unit however, can be moved pivotally about the point 88 so as to bring any part of the end surface of the driving disc 89 into contact with the tyre of the wheel 91. In this way various speeds can be obtained and also a reverse can be obtained if required.
Any suitable means may be provided for normally retaining the driving disc 89 in its inoperative position and for moving it into any required driving position.
In Figure 10 my invention is shown applied to a toy motor car, the body of which is indicated at 92. Beneath the body is provided a power unit 93 which is pivoted at 9-1; and has a road driving wheel 95. This power unit is supported upon a pivoted platform 96 having a portion 97 upon which an adult can stand. Normally the road wheel is held up out of contact with the ground by means of a spring 98. Driving contact with the ground is only effected when an adult stands on the platform 97. Steering means are provided as indicated at 99.
The arrangement shown in Figure 10 may also be applied to a childs toy tricycle.
In any of the constructions herein described it will be understood that the means for propelling the perambulator may either consist of internal combustion or hot air or steam engines or electrical means may be employed including batteries driving a motor or electrical means in conjunction with internal combustion or steam engines.
W hat I claim then is 1. The combination of a child carrying body having road wheels, a platform pivotally mounted beneath said body and extending rearwardly to provide a stand for an attendant passenger, a power unit on said platform, means carried by said power unit for transmitting the drive to the ground, and means for normally suspending the platform out of contact with the ground but allow it to be moved into contact therewith by the attendant passenger.
2. The combination of a child carrying body having road wheels, a platform pivotally mounted beneath said body and extending rearwardly to provide a stand for an attendant passenger, a power unit on said platform, means carried by said power unit for transmitting the drive to the ground, means for normally suspending the platform out of contact with the ground but allow it to be moved into contact therewith by the attendant passenger, and means for steering the vehicle mounted adjacent the rear of the said platform and operable by the attendant passenger when on the platform.
