KEYLESS LOCK.
Application filed July 28, 1924. Serial No. 728,770.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MEADE WVILDRIOK and ALEXANDER GILoHRIs'r HATCH, citizens of the United States, residing at Honolulu, 'lorritory of Hawaii, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyless Locks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to keyless locks of the general type shown in the prior Patent No. 1,373,283, granted March 29, 1921 to Meade VVildrick, and also in the patent to A. G. Hatch, No. 1,555,969; granted October 6, 1925, and has for one of its objects to provide a lock of this general character which will be simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and install.
In the said prior patent and co-pending application, there is disclosed and claimed, a keyless lock including a plurality of permutation wheels or discs having annullar grooves or flanges which co-operate with a bolt member which is transversely slidable relative to the axis of the said wheels. The present invention, on the other hand, contemplates the provision of a lock of this character in which the bolt member is slidable axially of the said wheels, the same general characteristics of the lock however, being retained. .Vhile in the present instance, the principlesof the invention are shown applied to a lock of comparatively simple form, which is particularly adapted for use with desk drawers and the like, it will, of course, be understood that the same principles may be readily applied to all of the various other forms of locks shown and described in the said patent and application by colnparatively minor structural changes which will readily occur to anyone skilled in the art. It is therefore wished to be understood that the invention is not considered as being limited to the particular form of lock shown, but that it is applicable to any and all of the before mentioned types of locks within the scope of the appended claims.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel details of construction, combinations and. ar-
rangements of parts more fully hereinafter described and particuarly pointed out in the said claims.
Referring to the said drawings forming a part of the specification, in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views;
Figure l is a front elevational view of a lock constructed in accordance with the present invention, which is particularly a llapted for use on desk drawers and the lire;
-Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the lock shown in Fig. 1, asseen from the right of the said figure; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the lock shown in Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4c is a transverse vertical sectional view taken approximately on the plane indicated by the line t-t of Fig. 1, and;
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the locking slide or bolt, together with its operating spindle.
Referring morep'articularly to the said drawings the numeral indicates the lock casing which may take the form of a casting having the flanged face portion 11 and the reduced rear body portion 12. The said body portion 12 is recessed, as indicated at 13, to accommodate a plurality of permutation discs or wheels 14, which are rotat ably mounted within the casing upon the shaft 15 of the slide or bolt 16. The said shaft 15 is slidably received in the longitudinally extending bore 17 with which the body portion 12 of the casing is provided, and the right hand end of the said casing, as viewed in Fig. 1, is also provided with the enlongated oblong aperture. 18, through which the complementary shaped head 19 of the bolt member l6may slide.
The said head 19 is provided with an elongated slot 20, through which projects one end of an operating spindle 21, the other end of which projects through the face plate 11 and is provided with an operating knob or fingerpiece 22. The said spindle 21 has rigidly secured to it, adjacent one face of the bolt head 19, a disc 23, which disc is provided with a radial slot or recess 2%, through which projects a pin 25, rigidly carried by the bolt head 19.
The permutation wheels or discs 14 are provided with axial bores, whereby they may be 'rotatably mounted. upon-the shaft of the slide 16 and the said discs or wheels are also provided with the keyways or notches 2?, which are adapted to accommodate keys or projections 28 integrally formed on or rigidly secured to the shaft 15 of the said bolt.
The said discs or wheels 1-1 are also provided upon one face with the annular flanges or ribs which serve to space the said discs when in their assembled positions, as will be readily understood from Fig. 3 of the drawings, and to provide annular chambers into which the said keys or projections 28 may be moved when the bolt is in its locked position. The said annular flanges 30 also serve as brake wheels and for greater effectiveness as such may be provided upon their outer faces with a plurality of notches or recesses 31, which may be engaged by suitable brake elements herein disclosed as detent springs 32, secured as by the screws or. other fastening means within the recess 13 of the body member 12. These springs will, of course, yieldingly retain the permutation wheels in any desired position, as will be readily understood.
The face plate portion 11 of the housing is provided with suitable apertures 35, through which the numerals or other characters which are provided on the outer circumference of the discs or wheels 14 may be viewed in order to ascertain the positions of the said wheels. These wheels may be plain, as here shown, .or they may be of the construction shown in the said patent to A. G. Hatch, No. 1,555,969; granted October 6, 1925.
The operation of the lock will be clear from the foregoing, but it may be briefly summarized as follows:
Assuming that the parts are in their locked positions, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8, and it is desired to unlock them, the various wheels or discs 1% are rotated until the required combination of characters thereon appears in the. openings to bring all of the various keyways 27 into alignment with the keys or projections 28, whereupon, by merely moving the operating knob or handle 22 in a counter-clockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 1, the spindle 21 and operat ing disc 23 will, through the pin and slot connection, 21 and 25, move the bolt 16 toward the left, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, to unlock the parts. The length of this movement may be such so as to only bring the keys 28 within the keyways 27, or it may be such as to move the keys 28 entirely to the opposite side of the disc or wheel 14, as will be readily understood. If the move ment only brings the keys within the keyways', then, of course, the discs may not be rotated while the lock is in its unlocked position. whereas if the movement is such his @315. t h her. side. f this said discs, then they may be rotated and the parts locked in their unlocked positions.
While one form of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction as well as the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention, and therefore it is not wished to be limited to the above disclosure except as may be required by the accompanying claims.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. In a keyless look, a casing provided with a recess and alongitudinal bore; a plurality of permutation discs in said recess, each having an integral annular flange, an axial bore and a keyway extending radially from said bore; the outer diameters of said flanges being less than that of said discs and the inner diameters thereof being greater than the diameter of said bore, said flanges serving to space said discs laterally and to form closed circular chambers between adjacent discs, the outer peripheries of' said flanges being provided with circumferentially spaced notches; detent springs secured within said recess and engaging said notches to yieldingly maintain said. discs in set positions; a bolt having a head and a shaft extending through the bores of said discs, slidably mounted in said casing bore; said shaft having projections adapted to enter said keyways and said circular chambers; and means for sliding said bolt.
2. A lock comprising a casing; a lockcontrolling member slidably mounted in said casing so as to be movable from an efiective to an ineffective position, and vice versa; a plurality of permutation wheels rotatably mounted in said casing in direct end to end relation with their axes aligned in parallelism with the direction of movement of said lock controlling member, said wheels having indicia-bearing portions of relatively large diameter, exposed through slots in said casing whereby they may be dependently set, and laterally extending portions of relatively small diameter adapted to serve as brake wheels; and brake elements mounted in said casing in cooperative relation with said brake wheels whereby said permutation wheels may be yicldingly held in set position, said wheels having portions lying in the paths of movement of parts of said lock-controlling member and preventing effective movement thereof except when set in a predetermined relation, said movement-preventing elements being so relatively disposed as to permit unlimited rotation of said wheels when said lock-controlling member is in either of its effective positions.
