Description

Dec. 8 Q 1925- R. M. BE'MISDORFER ADJUSTABLE HUB DUST GUARD AND MOUNTING Filed Sept. 12, 1925 F'atented Dec. 8, 1925.
UNITED STATES ROBERT M. BEMISDORFER, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.
ADJUSTABLE HUB DUST GUARD AND MOUNTING.
Application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ROBERT M. Brimrsnonrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hub Dust Guards and Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to dust guards for the front wheels of automobiles, and one object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and efiicient' guard to prevent dust or other foreign matter from entering the inside of the wheel hub and grinding between the spindle of the axle and the said hub, thereby abrading and damaging the bearing surfaces.
Another object is to provide an attachment of the kind described which may be readily mounted in place without taking off the wheel of the vehicle.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of the device as applied to the front wheel hub and adjacent steering gear of an automobile;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the detached device;
Figure 3 is a side elevation;
Figure 4 is an end view.
In carrying out this invention I provide upper and lower semi-circular hub shields 1 and 2, of flexible sheet metal, the same being slitted along each edge with a plurality of slits '8 directed straight inwardly, thereby forming rows of tabs 10 and 11. Supporting arms 4 are extended from these shields, the same having forks 5 adapted to embrace the steering knuckle 6. Two latch bars '7 are provided, the same having bolt holes 8 in their ends adapted to engage the ends of the forks 5. The outer ends of the forks are threaded to engage nuts 9. These shields are readily mounted in place over the inner end of the wheel hub 12 by bolting the forks over the steering knuckle, as shown in Figure 1. The inwardly turnedv edges of the upper shield are preferably allowed to overlap the outwardly turned 12, 1925. Serial 11045377..
While I have herein described a certain specificmanner and method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of by invention, so. as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim: 1
1. In combination with the front wheel hub and adjacent steering knuckle of an automobile, a device of the kind described, comprising semi-circular shields of flexible material adapted to fit over the inner end of the hub at the top and bottom thereof, the said shields having rows of tabs formed along their edges adapted to be bent downwardly for forming a packing box; and means for securing the shields to the steering knuckle.
2. In a device of the kind described, semicircular hub shields adaptedto enclose the I inner end of a vehicle hub, the said shield having rows of tabs formed along their edges adapted to be bent downwardly to form a packing box. 3
3. In a device of the kind described, semicircular hub shields adapted to enclose the inner end of a vehicle hub, the said shields having rows of tabs formed along their edges adapted to be bent, downwardly to form a packing box, and the inwardly turned edges of the upper shield being adapted to overlap the inwardly turned edges of the lower shield, for locking the shields together. V
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ROBERT M. BEMISDORFER.
