Be it known that I, JULIAN S. HEXTER, a citizenof the'Unitcd States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of 6 Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and more particularly to means which may be applied to that class of typewriting machines known as bookkeeping machines, whereby a continuous work-sheet having a succession of similar forms printed thereon may be fed through the machine in such a manner that, at the conclusion of the typing operation which completes the first printed form, it may be gaged for dismem berm'ent from thework-sheet simultaneously with the gaging of the second printed form for typing on its first writing line.
In practice, particularly in banking institutions, the writing of cashiers checks and drafts is an item that consumestime, especially when these checks are handled as separate forms and when the names, dates and a. amounts typed or written on perhaps fifty or more of these separate check forms must be further recorded on a proof-sheet, The fact, too, that the writing of these checks or drafts may not be a continuous operation, but may have to be done intermittently during the course of a days business, further adds to the difiiculties encountered in aligning numerous check forms on the single proof-sheet, which must be removed from the machine with the completed check form I and reinserted with each succeeding check form. To overcome these difliculties, a'table is fastened in position in front of and above the platen of the typewriter; As the typing operation progresses,the leading edge of the work-sheet bearing theprinted check forms is guided over the face of this table while the leading edges of the proof-sheet and the interleaved carbon-sheet are guided by paper-fingers through a space left between the bottom edge of the table and the :platen toaposition in back ofthe table andover the regular front paper-table of the machine. At the conclusion of the" typing operation' 'which finishes the first check form printed on the work-sheet, the leading edge of-the work-sheet is advanced until it touches a gage on the table. This operation brings the perforated line of detachment which separates the first from the second printed check form under a severing knife, and at the same time advances the first writing line of the second check form to the point of writing in readiness to duplicate the complete operation. manipulation of the work-sheet bearing the printed check forms does not disturb the proof-sheet, and that, at the conclusion of the operation described above, the proofsheet will be in correct position to receive the impression of the matter to be typed on the second check form.

As is usual in a typewriting machine, a platen 5 is mounted on a platen-axle 6 which is journaled in end members 7 of a movable It will be noted that the carriage 8. Also journaled in the end members 7 is a transverse shaft 9 on which are slidably mounted paper-fingers 10. A sup-- porting bar 11, suitably fastened at its ends to the end members 7, carries a bifurcated table 12. Located on the rear, near the top edges of the two halves of the bifurcated nuts and screws 16, and are kept in a verti- 1 cal position by-means of pins 17. A knife I i 18 having arms 19 projecting from its extreme ends is pivotallyfastened near the lower edge of the bifurcated table 12 by means of rivets 20; Fastened to each of the arms 19 of the knife 18 are spring members 21 which have formed thereon finger-pieces I V, interleaved therebetween.

In operation, a work-sheet 24, having a plurality of forms 25 printed thereon wh1ch are divided from one another by weakened lines of detachment 26, is superimposed over another work-sheet 27 and a carbon-sheet is The superimposed work- sheets 24 and 27 are fed into the machine in the usual manner until their leading edges appear above the writing line scale of the typewriter. The leading edge of the work-sheet 27 is then separated from the leading edge of the work-sheet 24 and f is guided, together with the interleaved ear-v bon-sheet, underneath the paper-fingers 10- and behind the front paper-table of the machine. At the same time, the leading edge of the work-sheet 24 is guided underneath the lifted knife 18 and over the surface of the bifurcated table 12. As soon as the first writing line of the first form 25 appears un der the. writing point of the machine, the operator starts typing the matter that is intended to be filled in. At the conclusion of the typing operation which completes the first form 25, the work-sheet 24 is advanced until the leading edge of the work-sheet 24 is resting against the upwardly-projecting stop 14 of the ga e 13. This operation leaves'the weakened Iine of detachment 26 separating the first and second of the forms 25 directly under the cutting edge of the knife 18, which had previously been restored to its normal position The same operation has brought the first line of typing of the second of the printed-forms 25 to the writing point of the machine. The first form 25 may now be torn from the body of the work-sheet .24, leaving the second form 25, and the worksheet 27, which has remained intact during the form-severing operation, in position for the operator to duplicate the entire operation.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a front paper-table above the platen, a knife having supporting arms at its ends pivoted on the front papertable, the knife being swingable away from the front paper-table, substantially in the direction of the pull upon the knife at websevering, and spring-catches on the knife arranged to lock the knife to the table against yielding in response to' said pull and having grlpplng portions for the digital swinging of the knife away from the face of the front paper-table.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a front paper-table above the platen, a knife or gage having supporting arms at its-ends pivoted on the front paper-table, the knife or gage being swingable away from the front paper-table, sub
stantially in the direction of the pull upon the knife or age at web-severing, and towards the f nt paper-table to a position above the lowermost portion of the papertable and immediately adjacent the face of the front paper-table, spring-catches on the knife or gage arranged to lock the knife or gage to the table against yielding in response to said pull, and means for mounting the table and the knife or gage as a unit upon the niachi-ne.

In a typewriting machine, in co1nbination, a bifurcated supporting and guiding table having upturned side dges,substantially square openings in the upper portions of its two halves, and guiding and fastening pm members situated on the vertical axes of said open1ngs,sa1d fastenlng pin members being provided with thumb nuts, duplicate gaging means slidably mounted on the rear side near the upper edges of the halves of said bifurcated table; and vweb-severing means pivotally mounted near the lower edge of said bifurcated table.

In atypewriting machine, in combination, a bifurcated supporting and guiding table having upturned side edges, substantially square openings-in the upper portions of its two halves, and guiding and fastening pin members situated on the vertical axes of said "openings, said fastening pin members being provided with thumb nuts, duplicate gaging means s1idahly,.mounted on the rear side near the upper edges of the halves of said bifurcated table, said gaging means truding through said openings 1n said bifurcated table,
