GRINDING, REFINING, AND MIXING MACHINE.

To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MCINTYRE, of 28 Brighton Place, Portobello, Midlothian, Scotland, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin and Connected with Grinding, Refining, and Mixing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in connection with machines for grinding, refinin and mixing cocoa-beans, chocolate, chemicals and such like substances, andhas for its object to provide a more efiicient gear so that any desired pressure can be exerted on the grindin surface or released entirely while the machine is in motion or stationary.
A further improvement of my invention is to improve the construction of the flexible blades and the inner wall of the cylinder which forms the grindin surface in such a manner that the materia being ground or refined in the machine is reduced in a shorter period than previously could be accomplished. Also,'by this construction, we (provide a simple means whereby the grin surface can be easily examined and renewe if necessary.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a jacketed cylinder having covers suitably fixed to each end. The jacket is arranged so that water or steam can be circulated throu h" it for the pur se of keeping'the cylinfer at any desire temperature. The
driving shaft, which in the present arrangement is rotated by means of a worm wheel and shaft, has fixed to its inner end a wheel which carries pins. On these pins rockers or quadrants are mounted which are made to swing through a pre-determined are by means of pins-fixed to each rocker and engaging with notches cut in a ring which is isnounltfid and free to i533 fon ltlhe wheel.

Referring to the drawings, the jacketed cylinder A has covers B and B suitably fixed to its ends Water or steam may be circulated through the annular space C which forms the jacket, for the purpose of keeping the cylinder at any desired temperature. The driving shaft X, which, in the present arrangement, is rotated by means of the worm wheel D and theworm shaft E, passes through end cover B and hasfixed to its inner end the wheel F. This wheel carries the fixed pins G on which the rockers or quadrants H are mounted. These rockers are made to swing termined arc by,means o the pins I which are fixed to each rocker and engage with notches cut inthe ring J. This rin is mounted and free to turn on the whee F. The flexible blades K are mounted on the rockers Hand in the iresent arrangement carry four round metal are L, which grind or refine the material dealt with in through a predebore to take the spindle M. This spindle rotates with the driving shaft and is free to move in a. longitudinal direction through it. The outer end of the spindle M is reduced and passes through the external threaded sleeveN in which it is free to rotate and is prevented from having any end movement with relation to the sleeve by having the ball-race. R fitted between the sleeve and the washer P at one end and the ball-race R and the shoulder Q at the other. The nut U is threaded to take the sleeve N and issuitably fixed to the worm wheel V by which it is rotated, and also prevented from having an end movement through the worm wheel V eing a working fit between the faces D and I). Said wheel V .is keyed to the nut U as at T. 'The worm shaft A enages with the worm'wheel V and is operated y means of the hand-wheel A. The flange E and the worm-wheel D are bolted to the driving shaft X in such a manner that a recess is made to take the two ball-races F and F with thecollar Gwhich is formed on the nut U between; thus preventing'any lateral movement of the driving'shaft- X. Two of the rockers H are extended and the swivel joints H and H fitted to their ends to take one end of the rods J and J, the.
other ends of which are connected with the inner end of the spindle M so as to form a joint by the pin K. The dome O has a slot cut in it to take the indicator P which is attached to the sleeve N for the purpose of indicating the amount of pressure on the grinding surfaces. The material to be ground is supplied to the machine through the hoppers Q and Q and a suitable valve is fixed at the bottom of the end cover B,
but not shown, for the purpose of running off the refined material. In tightening the grinding surface of the flexible blades against the cylinder wall or releasing them the hand-wheel A is turned in one direction then through the worm shaft A and the worm wheel V the threaded nut ,U is rodirection the spindle M is moved away from the dome 0 thus releasing the flexible blades from the wall .of the cylinder. In the resent arrangement, I rovide four round ard metal bars L suitab y fixed to the blades K. The cylinder wall may be grooved to take the form as shown at S or may'be grooved to receive round metal bars as 8 19M} 9 S. In this instance the metal forming the cylinder wall is caulked at V to keep the bars in position. Bars other than round section may be used such as shown in Fi ure 7. To remove the rockers H so that the grinding surface may be examined or renewed, the end cover B is removed and the rockers disconnected from the fixed pins G. The working parts of the machine which required lubrication are supplied from the oil sum or bath W. The splash of the worm-w eel D during rotation provides a constant supply to the various oil holes such as shown at 1, 2, 3, 4. Any oil passing along the driving shaft X is drained back to the oil sump or bath W through the lantern ring X being fitted between the end of the bearing Y and the packing Y, the pipe U connecting a the annular'space formed by the lantern ring and the oil sump or bath W.
Claims.
1. In agrinding and mixing machine a cylinder, a tubular shaft mounted in a hearing in the cylinder and having a wheel arranged in the cylinder, :1 spindle longitudinally movable inthe bore of the tubular shaft, a frtxa ring on said wheel and in said cylinder, rockers pivotally mounted on said wheel and provided with pins which are slidable in radial slots with which the free ring is provided, and pivotally connect the rockers to said ring, grinding elements on said rockers arranged to engage the inner periphery of the cylinder, connections between the rockers and the spindle, means to rotate the tubular shaft with its wheel and rockers, and means to longitudinally adjust the spindle to thereby adjust the grinding elements with respect to the inner periphery of the cylinder.
2. In a grinding and mixing machine a cylinder, a tubular shaft mounted in a bearing in the cylinder and having a wheel arranged .in the cylinder, a spindle longitudinally; movable in the bore of the tubular shaft, rockers pivotally mounted on said wheel, grinding elements on said rockers arranged to engage the inner periphery of the cylinder, sprin connections between said rockers andsai grinding elements, connections between the rockers and the spindle, means to rotate the tubular shaft with its wheel and rockers, and means to longitudinall adjust the spindle to thereby adjust t e grinding elements with respect to the inner periphery of the, cylinder, and also vary the tension of said spring connections.
3. In a grinding and mixing machine a cylinder, a tubular shaft mounted in a bearing in the c linder and havin a wheel arranged in t e cylinder, a spindle longitudinally: movable in the bore of the tubular shaft, rockers pivotally mounted on said wheel, spring cements on said rockers arranged to press toward the inner periphery of the cylinder, grinding elements on said spring elements engaged by the tension of the latter with the inner periphery of the cylinder, connections between the rockers shaft, rockers pivotally mounted on said wheel, grinding elements on said rockers arranged to engage the inner periphery of the cylinder, connections between the rockers and the spindle, means to rotate the tubular shaft with its wheel and rockers, and means to longitudinally adjust the spindle to thereby adjust the grinding elements with respect to the inner periphery of the cylinder, said adjusting means for said spindle comprising an exteriorly threaded sleeve mounted on said spindle and connected thereto for longitudinal movement therewith, a nut threadedly engaged with said sleeve, and means to turn said nut.
5. In a grinding and mixing machme a cylinder, a tubular shaft mounted in a bearing in the cylinder and having a wheel arranged in the cylinder, a-spindle longitudinally movable in the bore of the tubular shaft, rockers pivotally mounted on said wheel, grinding elements on said rockers arranged to engage the inner periphery of the cylinder, connections between the rockers and the spindle, means to rotate the. tubular shaft with its wheel and rockers, and means to longitudinally adjust the spindle to thereby adjust the grinding elements with respect to the inner periphery of the cylinder, said adjusting means for said spindle comprising an exteriorly threaded sleeve mounted on said spindle and connected thereto for longitudinal movement therewith, a nut threadedly engaged with said sleeve, and means to turn said nut, said means comprising a worm wheel secured to said nut and a worm engaging said worm wheel.
6. In a grinding and mixing machine a cylinder, a tubular shaft mount" 1 in a hearing in the cylinder and having a wheel arranged in the cylinder, a spindle longitudinally movable in the bore of the tubular shaft, rockers pivotally mounted on said wheel, spring elements on said rockers arranged to press toward the inner periphery of the cylinder, grinding elements on said spring elements engaged by the tension of the latter with the inner periphery of the cylinder, connections between the rockers and the spindle, means to rotate the tubular shaft with its wheel and rockers, and means to longitudinally adjust the spindle to thereby adjust the grinding elements with respect to the inner periphery of the cylin der, and also vary the tension of said spring connections and means to indicate the position of said spindle.

In a grinding and mixing machine a cylinder, a tubular shaft mounted in a bearing in the cylinder and having a wheel arranged in the cylinder, a spindle longitudinally movable in the bore of the tubular shaft, rockers pivotally mounted on said wheel, grinding elements on said rockers arranged to engage the inner periphery of the cylin der, connections between the rockers and the spindle, means to rotate the tubular shaft with its wheel and rockers, and means to longitudinally adjust the spindle to thereby adjust the grinding elements with respect to the inner periphery of the cylinder,
said connections between the spindle and rockers comprising rods pivotally connected to said spindle, and swivel joints between said rod and said rockers, said swivel joints adapting said rods for universal angular movement with respect to said rockers.
8. In a grinding and mixing. machine a cylinder, a tubular shaft mounted in a bearing in the cylinder and having a wheel arranged in the cylinder, 2 spindle longitudinally movable in the bore of the tubular shaft, rockers pivotally mounted on said wheel, grinding elements on said rockers arranged to engage the inner periphery of the cylinder, connections between the rockers and the spindle, means to rotate the tubular shaft with its wheel and rockers, and means to longitudinally adjust the spindle to thereby adjust the grinding elements with respect to the inner periphery of the cylinder, spring plates on the rockers arranged'tangentially with reference tothe inner periphery 'of the cylinder, and grinding elements on said spring plates.
