To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JosnPH SONNENBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Door Knobs and Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make. and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in combination door-knobs and locks; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly to a novel door-knob, the spindle of which is of tubular construction provided with the knob attached thereto, with a key-operated mechanism for actuating a bolt, by means of which the door is ordinarily maintained in its closed position within the door-frame.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply-constructed, as well as an effectively operating combination door-knob and lock, of the general character hereinafterimore fully set forth, with a view of producing greater neatness in door-construction, owing to the fact that the usual door-locks and their escutcheon plates may be dispensed with.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be more fully set forth in the following specification.
With the various objects of the present in vention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel combination doorknob and lock hereinafter set forth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will ,be'morefully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification. 1

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a fragmentary portion of a door, and 2 a similar portion of the door-frame. Asindicated imthe several figures of the drawings, the door is provided with a socketed portion, as 3, usually of cylindrical crosssection, and with the laterally extending tubular portions 4: and 5, which communicate with said portion 3, substantially as shown. Suitably secured upon opposite sides of the door, by means of screws 6, or in any other suitable manner, are the usual rosettes? and 8, respectively provided with the centralopenings 9 and 10 fitted in alinement with therespective tubular portions etand 5,. Asshown, the said rosettes 7 and 8 are also respectively provided with recessed portions lland 12, into which are suitably fitted the shank-portions of suitably shaped door-knobs,,as 13 and M, substantially as shown in Figures 2, 3fand 6 of the drawings. settes 7 and 8, for mounting upon thepro jecting end-portions of said member 17, the tubular shank-portions of the door-knobs 13 other suitable means, upon the respective end-portnons'of said member 17. In its opposite sides, and centrally disposed between the end-portions of the said member 17, the
latter is formed with suitable openings or slots, as 19 and 20, and suitably fixed within said member 17, at desired locations, are stops or retaining discs 21 and 22,- provided with openings or perforations 23 and 24. Movably disposed within the said tubular member 17, between the said stops or retainingd-iscs21 and 22 is a lock-spindle receiving tubular element 25, the tubular. portion or bore 26 of which is of a squaredor similarlyshaped cross-section. In its opposite sidesthe said element 25 is made with elongated openings 27 and 28, disposed in angular or helical relation across each other, substantially as representedin Figure 8 of the drawings. Concentric with the said member 17 is a tubular bolt-actuating member 29, with oppositely extending bolt-actuating wings or fingers 30 and 31, and with perforations 32 and 33 in its opposite sides.

Referring now more particularly to Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings, it will be seen that the door 1 which is provided with a lateralbore 3 has snugly-fitted and suitably secured therein a bolt-receiving shell or ca'sing,as 42. When the various devices and parts of the herein-above described lock-mechanism are in their assembled relations shown in Figures 2, 6 and 7 of the drawings, with the wings or fingers 30 and 31 withdrawn the disc 51 being caused to assume the posi- I tion shown insaid Figure 5, and withthe coils of the spring 54 more fully compressed between said disc 51 and the disc 53] As soon as the knob is releasechthe spring 54 again returns the bolt and the'actuati-ng .posite sides, the said shell or casing 3 isproelements to their normalinitial positions, as will be evident. Thus, the door may be readily opened and closed. To enable proper action of the wings or fingers, when turning, the said shell or casing 3 is also provided in its sides with other openings, as 57, the purposes of which will be selfevident, more particularly from an, inspection of said Figure 5.
In order to lock the bolt-member 4L3 against movement, by inserting a key 39 into either door-knob, the lock-spindle can be properly turned, and actingasa key for the tubular member 25, will also turn the latter, with the pin 34 riding in the angularly disposed slots 27 and 28. Consequently the pin moves also in the longitudinally extending slots 19 and 20 of the tubular member 17, whereby a sliding movement of the tubular member 29 and its Wings or fingers 30 and 31, longitudinally upon the member 17, will also be produced. This movement of the member 29 causes the wings or fingers 30 and 31 to ride directly into the U-shaped receiving elements 48, into locked engagement therewith, ,so that the knobs can not be manipulated, and whereby the bo1t-member will be maintained in its locked engagement with he latchplate 45, as will be evident. Consequently the closed door is also locked against open- I rom the foregoing description of the present invention, it will be fully understood, that I have produced a neat arrangement of locking mechanism for doors, combined directly with the door-knobs thereof,
the mechanism being readily actuated by the insertion and turning of the key in either knob.
I am fully aware that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various de vices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. 7

In a combination door-knob and look, a door knob, a tubular spindle extending from said knob, said spindle being provided in its opposite sides with longitudinally extending slots, a bolt, a tubular member slidably mounted upon the outside of said spindle, said member being provided in its opposite sides with perforations, a bolt-actuating means connected with said slidable member for actuating said bolt, a tubular member oseillatorily disposed within said spindle, said latter member being provided in its opposite sides with helically disposed slots, a pin within said latter member, said pin extending through said helical slots, through the longitudinally extending slots of the tubular spindle, and into the perforations of said slidable member, and a key-actuated mechanism within said knob for actuating the tubular memberwithin the spindle and by means of said pin actuating said slidable member, and thereby locking said bolt and the bolt-actuating means of said slidable member against movement.

stop-members projecting forwardly from said receiving elements, 'a guiding disc connected with said rods, a-second disc within said shell, a coil-spring located between said ,discs, a tubular spindle extending from said knob, saidispindle being provided in its opposite sides with longitudinally extending slots, a tubular member slidably mounted upon the outside of said spindle, said member being provided in its opposite sides with p erforat'iojns, a bolt-actuating means con nected with said slidable' member for actuating said bolt, a tubular member oscillatorily'disposed within said spindle, said latter member being provided in its opposite sides v with helically disposed slots, a pin within said latter member, said pin extending through said helical slots, through the longitudinally extending slots of the tubular spine, and nt the perfo tions o sai l da a door-knob, a bolt-containing shell, a bolt within said shell, a plate extending rearwardly from said bolt, receiving elements connected with said plate, rods extending rearwardly from said receiving elements, stop-members projecting forwardly from said receiving elements, a guiding disc connected with said rods, a second disc within said shell, a coil-spring located between said discs, a tubular spindle extending from said knob, said spindle being provided in its opposite sides with longitudinally extending slots,-a tubular member slidably mounted upon the outside of said spindle, saidmemher being provided in its opposite sides with perforations, bolt-actuating fingers extending from said slidable member for actuating said bolt, a tubular member oscillatorily disposed within said spindle, said latter member being provided in its opposite sides with helically disposed slots, a pin within said latter member, said pin extending through said helical slots, through the longitudinally extending slots of the tubular spindle, and into the perforations of said slidable member, and a key-actuated mechanism within said knob for actuating the tubular member within the spindle and by means of the pin actuating said slidable member, and thereby moving said boltactuatin'g fingers into said receiving ele ments to lock said bolt against movement.
